I thought it was a great article also. 2 points:

 1. I hope Adobe makes Macromedia a division rather than, as the article
says, Soon to become Adobe. Adobe is a great brand name, but for some
different reasons. Macromedia, since the maturation of Dreamweaver 8
especially, has become also a great brand name for slightly different
reasons; of course Flash attributes to this also.

Not sure, i can't see Adobe giving away its powerful brand (which
shadows Macromedia in terms of door knock appeal) in way of a mutated
branding situation... interesting though to see what could come of it
all.

 2. One big element missing in all discussions, is the need to make Flash
more compatible with Search engines. I know there are a few search engines
that index flash content; but not well. And meta-tags don't go over well
with Google. I've resorted to text after a flash file that is colored, not
in the page background, but in the table background, to make sure it's
indexed w/ the flash; and an ISAPI Rewrite solution to ensure hierarchical
product pages even though the products appear w/in the page itself.

From memory Google are actively working on it now, i seem to recall
that Google was looking into metadata capabilities for flash based
sites. Only downfall overall is that deep linking will need to be in
place or some kind of approach. There are number of ways to handle
this, but more importantly one has to question whether they are
building a RIA or Website + Flash? ie which part is content and which
is housing type setup...

I also liked the articles comments on Gates; I've followed MS both as a sort
of worshiper and now a detractor (for my own very good reasons) for
nearly 20 years and I can tell you, his title of Chief Software Architect
is an absolute joke. With the exception of the design of the late 80's
Windows Messaging (meaning GUI messaging) architecture which was a well
thought out economy of scale solution oriented towards accomplishing a GUI
on DOS, I can't think of one solution, not one, that was either innovative
or original. He's a business man of the Tom Delay sort, period...one of
those By all means necessary guys, and that has nothing to do with
creativity. Real bulldogs are far more attractive than a soul like that,
hiding really an insecure desperation more than anything.

In all honesty, i don't mind ol bill. That being said, he's more of a
MS Evangalist then anything else, and when he said focus on user
experience, i don't look at that as what Bill in person says but
more of what Microsoft is looking at with a large degree of focus.
User Experience is as my article was hinting at, very important. Its
not just about timelines and budget constraints, its also is now
shaping up to be a decent point of difference, if software is getting
much more powerful these days, that means power needs to be dumbed
down so thats where FLEX comes into the overall equation.. simplify
the application, don't give a user 100% of an application if all they
ever use is 10%? with FLEX you stand a great position in terms of
breaking your UI up into portions thus having a progressive UI. Its
the HTML Web App dream but none of the pain and all of the eye candy
(halo built in does a great enough job to capture things like
preloading and what not).

Anyway, my word quota has been reached for the day and *cracks whip*
back to work :)

 Great article.

RE: [flexcoders] It's Time to Flex My Zorn: Flex 2.0 Flex Builder 2

2005-11-13 Thread Tim Beynart

I just had some training in FLEX and would agree that it is
a sweet system for building data aware UIs. My only issue with the FLEX
systemis that programmers are not UI experts, andprobablynever
willbe. It's a stretch to think the majority of developers will suddenly
take an interest in UI design when they havesafely ignored it for decades.
Their job has always been to "make it work". If FLEX has a clean model for
skinning (I haven't explored this) then perhaps it will faciliate more
conversations between designers and developers. If I were an optimist I would
imagine that FLEX would create a more user-centric breed of
programmers.

Speaking for myself,FLEX's proliferationcreates
a huge opportunity for designer/developer mutants from the Flash world.
:-)
