I know what I want: more knobs and buttons. I already run my Flex 3K without
a keyboard and mouse (touch screen and FlexControl), however, there are times
when I really want to fiddle with a knob. I am hopeful. So, my Dream Flex? A
normal looking radio with a 9 touchscreen, a few knobs and buttons (all
programmable), 100W output, built-in antenna tuner, no need for a
keyboard/mouse/screen (but you could if you wanted to). A 5000c with buttons, I
guess in short.

It would also help Flex if they could have a mainstream radio that the
average Joe would even look at - the Flex now appeal to computer geeks (me),
software geeks and engineering types. The operator that just want tot urn it on
and go would nt even consider aFlex (too complex, they say - I asked many hams
why they do not even think about a Flex, but would drop thousands of $$ on a
Yaesu, Kenwood, Elecraft (I'd love to have a K3), etc...

Re: [Flexradio] Synergy KM sharing SW

2012-01-08 Thread Jerry Johnson
I run Synergy here on five computers and six monitors. The SDR computer is a
quad core, has two monitors and runs Win7 32 Pro. It also runs the Synergy
server and has been doing so for over six months. Photos at
http://w3jjj.com/history.html .

The only problem I've ever encountered is that occasionally I have to restart
the SDR system because it loses contact with the other computers. This has only
happened when I use the Win 7 Snipping tool to cut/paste large images.

I have not experienced any issues with DPC's.

The real plus of not using a KVM switch is that you can cut/paste between
computers with Synergy. You cannot drag and drop from computer-to-computer, but
I understand that might be a future feature.

My aforementioned SDR machine is Win 7 32, the Web Server machine is Win 7 32,
two ancillary systems are Vista and my email/secondary digital receive system
is XP Pro.

I leave all of my systems (and the Flex) run 24x7 and have been up constantly
for over a year.

I did play with Ubuntu for a couple of years, but that was pre-Synergy, so I
can't offer any insight into it's compatibility.

I did a quick search of the KB about using Synergy keyboard and mouse sharing
software or something like it with a machine running PSDR. I did not find any
KB articles and I don't remember it being talked about on this email list
either. I'm curious if anyone is already running it, and if they have run into
issues with it, specifically if it aggravates DPC's. I really want to get away
from having to use a KVM switch to switch the keyboard and mouse between
machines, I already have dedicated monitors for each. And using separate
keyboards and mice is not really and option either.

I'd like to use it across three of my machines. The main Ubuntu box, my Win 7
x64 SDR box, and my logging, Pegasus, rotator controller XP box. The KM
server will be the Linux box since it is the one that will always be on, the
Windows radio machines aren't always fired up.

switch between four computers 3 of which run Linux or dual boot. I have a

make adjustment without changing KVM focus.

I love Linux but I also use what works. If I needed a Mac to run PowerSDR
I'd buy one. Windows 7 64 works great and PowerSDR is fantastic. How Windows
8 will work we will obviously see but I am not jumping on the upgrade

Excellent Demo. You might comment what you are using for your primary and
secondary antennas. I found on using the MFJ1026 that the built in antenna
did not pick up enough of the noise to cancel out. Going with an external

Re: [Flexradio] Noise Cancelers and flex 3000

2009-10-18 Thread Jerry Johnson
I didn't get to see Anthony's video, but I run an MFJ 1026. My main antenna
is a W5GI dipole and my second antenna is a vertical. The MFJ does a great
job of nulling out the noise. It can make the noise disappear and reveal
signals you couldn't otherwise hear.
It's basic theory of adding in a signal out of phase to cancel something
out. The secondary antenna is the keys to eliminating some interference.

Same problem here. It worked the first time I used it. Shut down for a
while, went to use the rig and all I had was a noise floor with no signals
at -150.
Reloaded 1.2.1.10 and all is ok. I don't have the RX2 and I have the older
RFIO board.

Re: [Flexradio] TX Audio Quality Help, please!

2008-07-07 Thread Jerry Johnson
Jeff, a couple questions.
What version of the code are you running? Have you tried different versions
to see if it affects the sound?
If you back off the mike gain does it still sound grainy?
Are you feeding the 5000 output into a dummy load for your recording?
Have you tried it on a different band to see if it's RF?
The third recording sounds slightly better then the first two when you back
away from the mic.
My 1KSDR had this problem until I added an EQplus in front of it. Working
with Julius (W2IHY), I knew this was RF but I couldn't get rid of it. Maybe
I didn't have the correct ferrite beads or bypassing. But adding the EQplus
fixed it for me.
I also use a PR40 and my shack is directly under my W5GI antenna.
As a side note, if you are ever looking for software to measure THD, I use
the following from www.ymec.com. They have a 30 trial that you could measure
THD with. Since this is amateur equipment and not commercial grade I have
not done this with my radio gear but I might be a fun test.

Subject: [Flexradio] TX Audio Quality Help, please!

Some friends of mine and I often meet on 80 meters to operate in
wideband audio mode (4k to 5k audio) on SSB. (Yes, I know that this
isn't recommended operating practice, but we do it early in the evening
before the band becomes occupied, so (hopefully) we aren't bothering
anyone, and it sure does sound good.) Anyway, there have been a few
complaints about my audio. I've been fighting this problem since
January, and I've tried a number of things to improve the audio, but
nothing has helped. Neither Gerald nor John at Flex have had any luck
replicating my problem - it seems I'm the only one experiencing it.

Anyway - I'm at wit's end trying to figure out what the heck is going
on, and so I thought I'd try the massive brain power on the reflector to
see if anyone here might have any ideas. I'm open to all suggestions!

To get an idea of what I'm experiencing, you can go to my Blog. The URL
is: http://k6jca.blogspot.com/

There are three different audio tests. If you could, please take a
listen. Is there distortion, or am I imagining things? If you do hear
distortion, any ideas of what to do?

Suggestions, advice, and comments are welcome! And by the way, if any
of you run a Heil PR-40 directly into your Flex, what settings for TX EQ
do you use?

Thanks!

Flex 5000a (maybe I missed an announcement on this also)

Looks like our designers missed something when designing the Flex5000A and
some of the promised future expansions. So much that now it's time to
start
paying for upgrades to fully use some features.
I was caught off guard last week to find out the price of the RX2 has went
up in price or to say the promotion was over. (I missed any announcement
that there was an end date to that one). Now it appears we might need a
new
HRFIO board according to the Flex ordering web site to fully use the
second
 receiver.
All of sudden I'm learning why I shouldn't be an early adopter.
Don't get me wrong. I love the Flex and how it's changing the industry,
but
they apparently have identified a short coming on the original design and
have come up with a fix. But what's next? They finish the design of the
transverters and we find the next board that's going to have to be
replaced
and maybe it won't be this cheap.
According to the web site there is a $40 rebate when you return the old
board so that helps ease the cost.

So a questions and I'll shut up.
Can Flex outline what features each of the 3 HRFIO boards has so I can
make
a decision if I even want this upgrade? That way I can decide if the RX2
which now costs $649 + $169 (HRFIO) -($40 REBATE) is worth it.

 Thanks, Jerry, WB0UZW.

PS for Tim I think. The 'More info'. .link on this new board appears to be
broke. The link might have the answer to my question buy I can't get it to
 work.

No, no objection. It just caught me off guard. This was talked about since
Dayton last year as being the SO2R out of the box once we had the RX2. I now
have the info behind the link and can see changes in ASSY34.

The ASSY 34 version adds a superset of two new features in addition to the
RX2 capabilities available with ASSY 27:
1. The option to connect RX2 to the ANT1 SO-230 (UHF) connector for
transceiver operation.
2. The ability use any of the ANT1-3 connectors for 6m transmissions
I would have thought these two options would have been there since day 1.
Just my thinking. Shame on me.

Thanks for the input guys.

This is a good point.

Take the upgrade between the IC-756 Pro II and the Pro III as an example
of the extreme end of the scale. It is the same radio with a bit more
filtering at the first IF, a slightly improved preamp and 60m support and it
was almost $1000 more than the list price of the Pro II when it was
released. We get very spoiled because with a SDR, we get *lots* of upgrades
to the radio for free with a software download or for a small incremental
cost when it is a rare hardware change.

Re: [Flexradio] Palstar AT-AUTO external automatic antenna tuners

2008-03-21 Thread Jerry Johnson
Hi Tom,
I run the 5000a with the AT-AUTO. Works great.
The setup goes like this.
I have the 5000a cat port in PowerSDR set to com 16. Com 16 is paired with
com 6 in N8VB's vCom driver.
Then I use K5FR's (Steve Nance) DDUtil to handle virtual com ports.
The Radio port is set to com 6, then the passive listener port is set to com
3. Com 3 is a physical com port going to the AT-Auto.
The AT-AUTO is set to Kenwood CAT commands only and PowerSDR is set to
Kenwood commands. Also the baud rate is same at PowerSDR, DDUtil and the
AT-AUTO.
With this much of the config, the AT-AUTO will track the Flex 5000a.
Next is some more fun. In DDUtil I now set the Master RCP port to another
vCom port. It happens to be com17. Now I launch Ham Radio Deluxe and tell it
I have a Kenwood 2000 on com7.
Now I change frequency and do all my logging in HRD and the PowerSDR and the
AT-AUTO all in sync.
The next step is to feed CAT commands to an AMP but I haven't got their yet.
Hope this helps.
Fire away with any questions.

Jerry, WB0UZW.

Subject: [Flexradio] DDUtil Beta Release

Anyone need a way to send PowerSDR transmit frequency data to your Linear or
Band Switch or Tuner while using your favorite radio control program. I have
written a small C# helper utility called DDUtil (Flex Data Decoder Utility)
which I think will do that.

In brief DDUtil will connect to PowerSDR, poll it for transmit frequency
data and then furnish it to your RS-232 and/or BCD band switching devices.
For example it will band switch a Yaesu Quadra amplifier, a SteppIR antenna
controller and a Palstar AT-Auto tuner all at the same time. If you want to
run a radio control program such as HRD or DXLabs or MixW it will change
modes and pass all commands from the radio control program to PowerSDR and
still provide the passive listener devices frequency data.

DDUtil is very much beta software and there will be bugs so don't look for a
bug-free release just yet. I have been playing with it for several weeks and
can't break so I figured it was time to give it to Mikey. Those of you brave
enough to try it can find it here http://k5fr.com/DDUtil.htm. Please read
the web page and help file as there are some setup issues to be aware of.

Please report any bugs or comments to me privately.

Thanks,
Steve - K5FR
