Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 not responding

2017-02-11 Thread Neal Campbell
Don,

The main components are:
The firewire interface on the computer
The firewire cable
The firewire port on the 3000.

Try replacing the cable with the one that works and if it still doesn't
work, you know the cable is okay.

If you can see the other radio with the same firewire port on the computer,
then you can eliminate that.

That would leave the radio's firewire port to be at blame (or the radio
itself).

Believe me, I am still selling powersdr-based computers and the parts are
not leaving the market at all. You might find PCI-based cards leaving the
market just the way ISA-based cards did because lack of support under Intel
chipsets. Tablets are changing the market (as well as Chrome-based laptops)
so everything is going simpler and cheaper, except gamer-oriented laptops
which are way more expensive than most people want to pay (but they
likewise are compatible with the firewire-based SDRs.

2015-11-30 Thread Neal Campbell
Hi Patrick,

I have gotten the question of what support services I offer more than once
so I am replying to the reflector so others might know.

I offer the following services, all targeted towards the entire Flex and
Apache Labs radio line (I own a 5000 by the way so its what I have the most
experience with!):
- Remote installation and tune-up service - where I tune and streamline
your windows installation, take care of any latency problems present,
install any software you want, configure it to work with your radio and
document the configuration by creating a document of screen snapshots of
each changed parameter.

- SDR New User Orientation and installation service - where I install,
configure and document any software that you would like to work with your
radio. I also spend time going thru any operational issues you might have.

- 1 Year of Remote Support for your ham software - I provide yearly support
contracts to help you with any problems with your computer, configure
software (including installing new releases) as well as assist when
installing new hardware, etc. I offer a 1 business day turn around for
getting back to you when you request assistance.

- 30 day Remote Support for your ham software - As above for 30 days!

...I believe it has been noted that there is no further development
anticipated for PowerSDR. Additionally, it sounds like the 'dongle'
plugs into the 6K rather than into a PC so there are probably significant
architectural and hardware differences that would pretty much exclude the
legacy radios. Just my two cents worth (and probably worth less than that).

Re: [Flexradio] Windows 10

2015-08-03 Thread Neal Campbell
What program is reporting the comm ports don't exist? Are you starting that
program as part of the Startup of your system?

It takes a while (even in Win7) for VSPMgr's comm ports from being
established and if you run a program (like DDUtil) that uses them before
everything is established, it will not 'see' the ports.

You can test this but just manuall running the program (ie DDUtil) later on
and it will see the ports just fine.

I have solved this in my systems but using scheduled tasks to start up
these programs after a 20 second delay after startup instead of using the
startup folder.

 Hi Don,
I did not notice until you mentioned it, since my ports were all okay. I
did try to open VSP Manager after
seeing your message and i observed the sane thing.

When I tried to go to the location where VSP Manager was installed, I
noticed it was under a temp folder
After uninstalling the VSP manager using add remove programs, i made a
volder VSP Manager under C:\ and moved the setup.exe folder there.
I then executed the setup.exe folder and all is well now.

I can RX okay (okay so not much received) but if the WSPR software goes to

unceremoniously with a warning of TX out of band and forced STOP. My TX
filter is 2900 high, 200 low, which is too wide for the 60m channel. I'm in
5.28850 listening to around 1khz of the channel.

If I set my HIGH to be say 1200 and my low to be 200, do i have to reset
this back to 2900 high every time I want to use SSB? It would be a pain to
have to amend the PSDR settings every time I change modes.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR and Falling prices

2015-03-02 Thread Neal Campbell
You can get the source code by asking. I think you now need VS2008. The guy
who does the version of PSDR that uses the Hercules DJ console is able to
fully compile and deliver an add on version. I do not know if there are
dll's that he cannot distribute himself that incorporates the proprietary
parts of the radio, but I honestly bet that Flex will drop the proprietary
parts in the medium future (2-3 years as opposed to next month). I have no
inside information about this, its just my feeling.

PSDR is being updated every 2-3 months over on the OpenHPSDR side of the
source code and below the UI (which they have also enhanced) there is very
little left of the code that Flex uses. Its possible that they get tired
and stop updating it but since its still their premier software (and
because of the architecture of their radios) I do not think it faces any
decreased activity in the future.

but I'm not sure their version supports Flex hardware any longer.

Also, the fact that the Flex PowerSDR compiled ONLY under Visual Studio
2003 is a dramatically limiting factor. I bought a newer version of Visual
Studio (2005), only to find out the code would NOT compile under it. For
 years.

I'm not faulting Flex at all on any of the above. And, I'm not arguing
one way or the other. I'm just checking on your assumption that it would
be reasonable to modify and improve the latest distributed version of
 PowerSDR.

Do you have source for the 6500-series radios yet?

They don’t have to be gods to prevent mere mortals from working with/on
the code. They just have to restrict the distribution of source, or use
tools that are difficult for those mere mortals to obtain.

BTW, I also have a 6500, and an SDR-1000. I'd rather Flex spend its time
on providing the improvements to SmartSDR than improving PowerSDR any
further. And, I believe that's what they are doing.

 GO FLEX!!

Given the wish, the will, and time isn't it at least under consideration?

I just question the rush to pay for something that's free and licensed
 to stay that way.
 I bought an SDR1000, Flex5000A, and Flex6500 just because I could tinker
with them in software. Seriously the existing code was written by
 Amateurs, not Magicians or Gods.
If they could do it. Why can't I? I have the hardware, the wish, and the

won't predict what will happen next. I want to do. not just use.

So I'm going to hang on to mine. They're still new, and getting newer.

There are still people scrambling to get SDR1000s up and running so I am
not so concerned about the value of the 5000s and 3000s. They are still

(and packaging).

PowerSDR is an old friend and things just seem to work when and where I
want them to, its still tough competition for SmartSDR since its feature

I doubt that the value will go below 1.5K though. If I saw something much

repeaters or do you do simplex and SSB. Also, what is the added
receivers? Do you monitor two different Bands. I have trouble just
listening to one band never mind two at once. LOL
 Thanks for the info folks

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Value

2015-03-01 Thread Neal Campbell
I dont think there is an issue with old computers (I will continue to test,
configure, build and support these radios for as long as anyone will
tolerate me!)

I think the way forward would be for Flex to contribute their proprietary
parts of PowerSDR back to the Open Source license and let it merge with the
OpenHPSDR programming branch of PSDR. Warren Pratt and crew have done some
absolutely amazing things with their flavor of PSDR (they just introduced a
second noise reduction feature, for instance) and have completely rewritten
all of the DSP logic, it performs just wonderfully.

It might be too early for them to do this as I expect it could be viewed as
discontinuing support but it would really open things up a lot (and bring a
lot more resources onboard for its maintenance).

Also would be interesting to see if cuSDR ever gets the transmit side of
the logic straight, it could also be ported to the Flex radios.

What might perk up interest in buying a used Flex 5000 or 3000 would be
if Flex released a new version of PowerSDR. The last version, 2.7.2, was
issued almost a year ago (March/April 2014). Potential buyers might be
swayed positively if they saw that the software was still being updated
even if for the most part, it was mainly just bug fixes. To me, it could
be a win-win for Flex. New Flex users would come into the fold buying up
the used 3000's and 5000's and existing Flex users could migrate to the
6000 series without sitting on a double investment of equipment.

Just make sure you are using VSPMgs 1.0.3 instead of 1.0.1. Also. I move
my flexcontrol to COMM30 or greater since SSDR/PSDR will find it and
Windows leaves it alone.

I never have flexcontrol/vspmgr 1.0.3 issues, in over 100 machines sold.

 Which one is valid?

 Currently I have:

Ports 1-4 real PCIe serial ports

Port 5 a USB serial port
Ports 6-8 are each one end of a VSP pair.

I have legacy software which is still useful but only sees ports 1-8 and
losing the use of those ports

I would check the power supply feeding the radio. Make sure you are not
going thru those 12v distribution strips sold by 3rd party companies, there
will be a slight voltage drop and you will need all the volts you can get

Yes, I once had WSJT (JT-65A) working, but that was two computers ago. I've
even made one six meter ENE contact and been heard by several stations.
 With
W7GJ now at KH8, I'd like to try to work him. But, without WSJY, VAC and
Power SDR working together, there's no chance.

I do have VAC installed and the latest Released version of WSJT as well as
VSP manager. So, I don't need instructions on downloading and installing
same. The OLD Knowledge Center article that I printed out a year or two
 ago,
spends a lot of verbiage on downloading and installing these programs. It
talks about installing VAC into Power SDR Version 1.14.0. That's how old it
 is.

One of things it says it to make sure that Flex 5000 Firewire device driver
is set to the same parameters and Safe Mode 1 is the operating mode. It
refers to another Knowledge Center article to explain how to do this.

Going to the Flex Website, I find no place to find Knowledge Center
 articles
anymore. Has the Knowledge Center been done away with? I did find a
 so-called White Paper entitled

LEVERAGING SDR FOR BETTER DIGITAL MODE COMMUNICATIONS. But it is nothing
but a sales pitch for software defined radio and VAC. I don't need a sales
pitch. I'm already convinced re SDR and have been for years..

What I need is a good up-to-date step-by-step description of what
 parameters
to set into Power SDR, VAC and WSJT. At the moment, I'm getting an ERROR
message in WSJT saying Error in opening audio channels and some other
stuff that says it won't work.

I DID have the audio stream running normally an hour or so back, but I've
 obviously messed it up now.

and it obviously is having negative effects on smartSdr users.

Could you look and see if I used this graphics card in your computer? Go to

let me know by sending me an email to nealk...@gmail.com.

 Dudley,

I agree. Our club had an Astron RM-35 that had the series pass transistor
fail (short). The output voltage went to the maximum provided by the
transformer the 2 rigs connected to it were damaged. The Yaesu FT-950
 was
repairable, but a Yaesu FM rig was not economical to repair.

A problem with linear supplies is that if the series transistor fails, the
result is a serious over-voltage situation.

I do it as an option on the computers I sell, basically I buy split toroids
from digikey and put one on any non-data lead in the case. The most
critical is to get the wires going to the front panel switches and lights
as I think they are the most common cause of RF leaking into the case but I
feel better doing all of the power cables touching the mobo, including the

Wow, what a life changing experience I had last night. I was walking by
my Man Cave when I looked in and saw my computer working like crazy. At
first I thought that On No my computer is crashing. I went in and then
realized that Neil was on the Team Viewer and fixing all my computer
problems. I now have the Hercules DJ program in as well as Bobs Meter
program. My computer is now flawless and I love it.

All of a sudden I looked down and saw that Neil had written asking if I
was around and we began to talk. He asked if I wanted to know about my DX
programs that were put in by him. I told him I was not really interested
in DXing. He then asked if I liked the Digital part of Flex and I told him
not at this time as I just liked talking. The next thing I knew this large
note pad or something lik that came on and Neil told me it was easier
talking back and forth. We talked this way for about an hour and at the
end he said, You have just had your first experience with Digital Radio.
I laughed and said Really? So, I have learned that I now like Digital
and will learn to use it more.

I want to take this time to thank Neil; from the bottom of my heart. I
have been sitting around here for the past few months not really having
interest in much. I lost my interest in my fellow man and have been
avoiding contact with people. I realize now that I am totally burned out
 from my career.

I have seen all you people come rushing out to try and help me with all
the various problems I was experiencing with trying to get this Flex to do
all I wanted it to do. You have all been great and it has given me some
new hope. I have found people who are nice and want to help others and
show a genuine concern for other people.

So, I thank each and every one of you for your concern and advice.

 God Bless

I have seen 2 instances where DDU was drawing excessive CPU utilization
(like 90%) and it obviously was stressing the system to the point that
anything with a DPC had to wait a long while to getr control back.

I replaced DDU2 with DDU3 and the problems were fixed.

I have a Flex 3000 with PSDR 2.7.2 that has been running generally fine
 until this PM.
When I went to tune, no power out was shown. I rebooted XP Pro SP3 and one
tune effort worked a bit, but subsequent efforts showed no power out again.
I took power off the F3K and the PC, then powered all back on, symptom
continued. When I ATU or Tune, the SWR sweeps down the full range of the
meter, then starts back again at the high end.
Something is screwed up, but I have no idea what.
 What should I do now?

I just got a new Macbook Air. I installed Parallels 9 with Windows 8.1.
I have the Thunderbolt to Firewire dongle attached to the Granite Firewire
cable. I'll be getting a Flex 3000 soon and wondering if anyone has
experience with Parallels going through Thunderbolt to Flex since Parallels
 now claims to support Thunderbolt.

Re: [Flexradio] NVIDIA Video Card?

2014-01-03 Thread Neal Campbell
I think the trick is to not install new drivers for the their card once you
get one that works. If you have a problem it fixes, you should test it. Do
that by (1) take a checkpoint, (2) run DPCLat for 5-10 minutes and see what
DPCs look like. (3) install new drivers, then (4) run DPCLat and see how
things look. If its worse, (5) restore the system back to the checkpoint
you took in step 1!

including the current one (331.65) do behave very well (DPC peaks here are
 100 micro seconds).
But even the couple of releases with the high spikes never made the entire
system unstable. I also have the Nvidia Gforce Experience and Control Panel
running (next to AVG Internet Security).
I probably do not handle as much graphic cards as Neal does but I would
not panic if you happen to have an Nvidia card in your system, just keep
the drivers updated and if something does not work out on your system, roll
 back!
There are bios settings for the motherboard that have a far greater impact
on system stability than graphics drivers (but I agree that every way of
 keeping DPC's low helps).

Happy new year to all and keep enjoying your Flex!

I have an NVidia GT 530 on my 3.4 GHZ 12 GB RAM Dell 8300. I also have
noticed most of the DPCs arising out of NVidia. I have disabled most of
their add-on like the End User Experience piece and the gaming piece. My
sense is that if Neal doesn't install them, I will not do so in the future.
My biggest DPC downer is Carbonite, which I disable most of the time. In

Thats why I don't install nvidia cards in my computers! It seems they will
introduce a release with DPCs once or twice a year. Usually device
manufacturers have crappy drivers early on then they get better as time

Re: [Flexradio] Important Flex SDR Performance Factors

2013-12-27 Thread Neal Campbell
On a practical mode, how certain are you that you will like SDR radios
(don't ask us because we are all crazy about it)? If you are sure you like
SDR, buy the 3000. Its the best bang for the buck radio right now (and
possibly ever).

If you think you will like it but there is a little fly of doubt buzzing
around your ear, get the 1500. From the SdR perspective, it looks the same
as the 3000 and the 5000 (minus some sophisticated features probably not on
your to do list for quite a while). Run it for a couple of months and see
if your excitement grows or diminishes. If it grows, put the 1500 on the
market and buy the 3000. If it diminishes, put it on the market and buy the
KX3 or whatever.

You will be able to get 80+% of your investment back from the 1500 so you
really cannot lose either way.

For me the most important factor is the fun factor. An SDR radio is tons
of fun! An SDR radio should be included in your arsenal of radios. For some
it is the only radio they will use. The SDR radio's capabilities are
limited only by the imagination of the programmers of the software. I
picked up a Flex Radio in 2007. The software has vastly improved since then
and radio's capabilities have increased with each iteration. If you want a
radio that will evolve over time then an SDR radio is the way to go.
Good luck and happy new year!

  Dear Flex Users Group Members,

I have some Christmas money to invest in my first SDR radio. I am very
interested in the hobby aspects of SDR, but I must admit that there is a
certain appeal to old school knobs.

Therefore, the Elecraft KX3 has a certain appeal, but being a newbie, I
am not clear if the Flex 1500 or 3000 offer SDR performance advantages that
are more important considerations. I do understand both systems use the
same SDR software from Flex Radio.

What advice do you have for me on the most important factors that I
should consider in purchasing my first SDR radio?

  Thank you,

Re: [Flexradio] Another VAC program

2013-12-24 Thread Neal Campbell
HI Joe

Yes I have testing it out and within what it does, it does well. I think
from a pure engineering perspective, it is as good as VAC. It ultimately is
limited to 2 sound cards (if you pay the donation) where as with VAC you
have no restriction.

I am used to VAC, like its tools like Audio Repeater, so felt it was a nice
alternative that works (so we are not locked into a single supplier) but I
decided to stick with VAC.

GE all,
Ive been working this for a couple days and just about ready to give up.
Last Resort.
I bought a Logitech H600 wireless headset to use on my Dell 3150 laptop.
Station is 5KA running barefoot.
I can run cw and rtty remotely from the living room using the above laptop.
Remote software is teamviewer and remaud.
I cannot transmit audio(ssb) using the wireless headset. I have gone into
the sound control device on the control panel (win7 64bit) and changed the
default lines to the headset. Then I lose the audio to remaud. I am missing
a step/switch someplace and I dont know where.
Has anybody used this or similar configuration?
Oh yes, ive remapped the F keys to the numpad and the wav files play
excellent. Was going to use in the contest but afraid if someone ask me a
question where the answer is not prerecorded, Im up the creek without a
canoe much less a paddle.
Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and 73

 mail lists.
It would be a big improvement and help stop the spread of some myths

Well said Steve. I don't think anyone at Flex is paying any attention to
the post any more On 10/18/2013 7:01 PM, Steve Sterling wrote:
When I set up my Flex on psk31, etc. there was a writeup on the
knowledge base or wiki on how to set up for digital modes. Key point
was that you left the drive at 100% and LOWERED the VAC to no more
than -6db, never as high as 0db. As explained, 0 db on the ALC was
where the digital audio chain flat-topped which creates copious
amounts of IMD. If you set at 0db ALC, you will distort because it has
no more headroom if it goes +0.1db. You won't see it on the screen
meter (insufficient significant digits) but others will hear it.

Also, mic gain, equalizers and other tools in the microphone audio
chain are not in the VAC audio chain. Only the limiters and ALC.
 Straight through.

Oh, one area I also had problem with IMD. Your psk31 app and the FLEX
VAC input should be set at the same bit width and data rate. Otherwise
your 3rd party virtual audio cable software must convert from one
format to another, introducing distortion, instead of just passing the
 bit stream unmodified.

Set up right, Flex radios have a good reputation for being pretty
 clean in the digital modes.

my frequency and announced in a not very nice way that was I a lid

anyone I had worked before, so I was a little concerned if he was
right. So, I bought the PSKMETER kit and assembled it. After
running it and testing my signal, sure enough, I was splattering
quite a bit. This surprised me as I set my sound levels using the
ALC meter was always 0db or less and yielded full output power.

To better get an idea of what was going on, I setup the SDR 2.6.4
two-tone test to output two tones, 31hz apart, like 1000hz and 969hz
to simulate the PSK31 signal. Using PSKMETER and a dummy load to
limit stray RF signals, I tested on common PSK frequencies on all
the bands. All tests were done with no VACs enabled, and just using
the internal two-tone test so over driving by another software
 program was eliminated.

 Here's what I found:

80m Starts over driving above 40% power
40m Starts over driving above 30% power
30m Starts over driving above 65% power
20m Starts over driving above 85% power
17m Starts over driving above 75% power
15m No over driving at up to 100% power
12m No over driving at up to 100% power
10m Starts over driving above 35% power
6m No over driving at up to 100% power

In all cases, the meter for EQ, Mic, Leveler, Lev Gain, ALC, etc
never was any other value than zero.

I have tried to work with FlexRadio support, and they gave me the
run-a-round, saying to try this or thateven to try using the
transmit filter to limit the bandwidth I am transmitting to
eliminate the splatter. I would like it if they just admit that the
hardware is causing the problem, but I have not received any answer
 to that question.

I had the TX/RX board replaced last summer because of an unfortunate
lightening strike. I'm wondering if this board is suspect, but they
 won't answer.

Has anyone else seen this issue of over driving on some frequencies
 with the 1500?

Lucky for me I use JT65 and JT9 modes most of the time now, and they
are far less susceptible to splatter than PSK, and my QSOs seem to
bear out that my 5 watt Flex-1500 and SkyWire antenna work pretty
well. I recently made two contacts from Missouri to Western
Australia, one on 20 meters and the other on 40 meters, a distance
 of over 10,000 miles.

I'd like to add myself to the list of happy users of the FlexRadio /
computer services provided by Neal Campbell, K3NC. I was having some
software-related problems with my Flex 5K that Neal was able to cure with
his remote access service, as well as providing good advice on using the
radio. His company can be found on the web by doing a search for
Abrohamnealsoftware.

This has been mentioned before on the list, but it may be useful for new
users. And, I didn't get a kickback for the recommendation. :-)

Re: [Flexradio] 5000A ECOs..?

2013-10-12 Thread Neal Campbell
Jordon,

I do not speak for Flex but I have been hanging around here for a long
time.

Flex does not publicly list the ECOs associated with their equipment. From
observation, they seem to segregate the ECOs between got to recall and
next time the radio is in the shop, apply these fixes.

In the first category, you will see these typically happen around the
first months of general availability. I remember 1 for the 5000 for the
RFPIO board (the board managing the switching for the ports on the back of
the radio) which was needed for dual receiver configurations, and 1 for
the 3000 preamp if memory is correct.

Of the second category, probably the most publicized is the mod for
the 160M Spur problem. I don't play on 160 so I never was moved to
disconnect my radio and ship it to Austin for that but am sure that
when it was in later for firewire chip replacement, it was applied.
You can see on the repair record that they send back with your radio,
what was installed at the factory.

Luckily many people have not had to send their radios back. I am
pretty confident that you don't have a radio with the two problems I
can remember of the recall variety and the others probably are not
noticible in the absense or presense.

I finally had the time to install, but am having trouble getting the PTT

I use VSPManager (thanks Steve Nance) as my virtual serial port tool. When
I set it up, I used virtual ports 9-19 (created by VSPManager) to connect
to DIRECTLY to the PowerSDR DTR/RTS PTT signalling. The RemAud tool only
offers DTR/RTS method of PTT. RemAud has no capability of using the Kenwood
style serial string commands that I use via ddUtil for FLDigi, amp control,
 rotor control, K9DUR's VoiceKeyer, etc.

Problem: as soon as enable the CAT/PTT function in PowerSDR it throws my
Flex 5K into transmit. As if it is seeing DTR and RTS always in the
transmit position, irrespective of what RemAud is setting via DTR or RTS.
VSPManager shows both apps (PowerSDR and RemAud) successfully connecting to
 their respective ports.

Has anyone successfully connected the PTT function from RemAud to
PowerSDR? Does VSPManager handle DTR/RTS signalling?

highlighted by the Carbonite software. I would suspect the ethernet driver
(or worse, wifi). Go to the device manager app in the Control Panel, expand
the network devices header and tell me what manufacturer is of the network
device (you can see it merely by the name of the devices in that list).

Subject: [Flexradio] High DPC running PowerSDR

 Hi,

I have been having PowerSDR firewire connection hang due to high DPC
 in the
 storport.sys.
Long story short, it seems like the problem is Carbonite backup
 software
because when I paused it, the problem went away.

Has anyone else seen this problem.

 thanks
