Did you try swapping your Firewire cable? Also, try plugging the cable in to the computer without the Flex and see what happens. Barring that, try the Flex and cable on another computer if you can. 73 Steve W6SDM On Mon, Sep 15, 2014 at 10:00 AM, flexradio-requ...@flex-radio.biz wrote: Send FlexRadio mailing list submissions to flexradio@flex-radio.biz To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to flexradio-requ...@flex-radio.biz You can reach the person managing the list at flexradio-ow...@flex-radio.biz When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of FlexRadio digest... This all started a couple of weeks ago. We had a thunderstorm and lost power. Coax cables where disconnected, but computer and rig still on. I started getting strange issues where I would come to the shack and find the monitor with gibberish on it. That escalated to the computer completely locking up. This is a 2009 Neil built computer with no issues until now. today the computer locked up several times(of course during the vhf contest)so I decided to look inside. A bit of gunk on the heat sink so I blew it out cleaned it all up. Put it all back together and still lock ups. I defraged the drive, same issue except now windows would not start. had to run chkdsk and chkdsk /r and fixboot to repair that problem. Now computer runs fine. Runs logging program etc. When I turn on the 3000 I get a BSOD Driver_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_EQUAL. cHANGED fw CABLES SAME THING. Any help appreciated. Re: [Flexradio] Auto Defrag from Microsoft
Maybe it's supposed to, but it didn't disable the auto-defrag on my SSD. I don't know how it would know which drives were SSD (I have two, a primary and a backup, plus a regular SATA drive) unless it is smart enough to detect the drive type. The way this came up is that DDUtil was disconnecting from PowerSDR and other things that were plugged in to it. It turned out that the auto-defrag routine was the culprit. On Sat, Dec 8, 2012 at 9:51 AM, Neal nealk...@me.com wrote: From Windows 7 onward (maybe even in Vista but I haven't checked), Windows turns off the auto defrag for SSD drives so you do not need to worry. The cause, ferreted out by Steve Nance himself, is the auto de-frag utility that is in Windows 7. In it's perpetual effort to add useless, unneeded features while leaving ones out that may actually do someone some good, the Coke-drinking, Cheeto-munching programmers at Microsoft have added a utility that automatically defragments your hard drive at a predetermined interval. The default setting is on at some ambiguous early-morning schedule. Do yourself a big favor, go into control panel, and turn it off. You can find the setting under Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Defragment your Hard Drive. Hit the Configure Schedule button and un-check Run on a Schedule. Even if you don't use DDUtil, it's not a bad idea to get this out of your schedule - particularly if you use a solid state drive. If you use a solid state drive, like I do, defragmentation is not only unnecessary but it shortens the life of the drive. If you use a regular hard drive, it's unnecessary and, depending on the size of the drive and the speed of your system, can take hours to accomplish. While the defrag utility is running, your computer will feel like someone else is using it while you are. If you have an active computer with lots of files added and deleted, and your hard drive is three quarters or more full, defragmentation isn't a bad idea every few months or so - certainly not once per week. Defragmentation puts all of the available space in once contiguous area and it puts the fragmented files together, which, ever-so-slightly, speeds up access. Back in the day of the 20 MB hard drive, defragmentation would yield a noticeable speed improvement. Not so much anymore. If you do want to defrag your drive occasionally, I recommend a free program called Defraggler from Piriform, the same people who make CCCleaner. It's quick, efficient, safe, and give you a visual indicator of the lever of fragmentation and its progress. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

Thanks for all the help... still searching for the problem though. I did have it working a couple of weeks ago. I worked the 160M CW contest and used N1MM to key the exchange. It worked like a charm. [Flexradio] Flex5000 for Field Day this year.
I have used my Flex 3000 and 5000 in contests for the past two years. It's an outstanding contest radio. If anything, the panadapter gives on a tremendous advantage - especially when using the search-and-pounce method. The receiver, great filters, all add to the overall capability. Being able to see the guy calling a few kHz off frequency is a plus too. Even when camping out on a frequency and calling CQ TEST the tracking notch filter provides a big advantage. The Bozo who camps out 500 Hz above you and drowns you in splatter or key clicks can be made to disappear. He won't bother you but you may still bother him. :) I use automatic logging. Yes, the GUI is awkward if you're using the mouse to tune and control the rig - fighting for Windows focus between the logging program and PowerSDR can cause some delay. I use multiple physical controls - both the Flex Control and a Hercules box so that I always have control of the rig no matter what else Windows is doing. Yeah, I know. Those devices are redundant. I can't help it. I am a photographer and I love gadgets. I also use multiple monitors, five of them at present, so that I have direct view of PowerSDR, my logging software, cluster monitor, band maps, etc. There will always be members of the Flat Earth Society who think that software defined radio is a fad or a gimmick. If you're closed minded enough that you can't at least consider the advantages of emerging technology, then no radio will ever be good enough. I used a Collins S line and a Henry 2K linear for years. At the time, it was the best amateur radio equipment on the market. Now, in my opinion, Flex is right up there. 73, -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

Gerald, Many thanks for making your announcement the day before Mothers Day. You allowed me to make a speed run to Walgreens where I bought a box of chocolates and some fake roses. In the event that the game changer involves writing a check to Flex for a new radio, it always helps to schmooze the XYL in advance of the purchase. After all, she's been wanting new tile in the kitchen for years. As far as all the other comments, anticipation of whatever it is to come has given me more to look forward to than the upcoming Field Day. What would really suck if if there were no continuing development on the Flex products at all. When I bought my 5000 six months ago, I had multiple offers for my 3000 as soon as I made the decision to part with it. If the game changer involves new hardware, I will either buy it or continue to enjoy my 5000, which I still am not using to its full potential. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] PSDR and CW Get settings
Bill, I have CWGet working with my Flex5000 station. The settings are pretty simple provided you have VAC set up. I use VAC2 so that I can also run CW Skimmer. If you have trouble setting it up, send me an e-mail and I will give you a hand. I have been using CW since the mid 60s. I spent a number of years as a US Navy CW operator and some of that time as a CW instructor. Our colleagues are right - the key to learning CW is the same as the key to learning to play the piano. Practice. That being said, there's nothing wrong with using some of the software tools available to help you out. All of our brains work differently and what is a good learning path for one person doesn't work as well for another. I remember a Marine who was about to wash out of radio operator's school because he just couldn't get his speed up to the required 10WPM. I had him sit down with a key, and oscillator, and a book. His mission was to key the entire book, letter by letter. He would do a chapter then listen to a code tape and copy something else. It took a couple of weeks and he was an ace CW op. I don't write anything down when I copy. I usually remember most of what I hear. However, CWGet is a good tool to look back and see what kind of rig or antenna the guy was talking about. It also wouldn't hurt for someone learning to copy the code on their own and then look back at the CWGet screen and see what they missed. CWGet is far from perfect. If the timing is off or the operator has a sloppy fist, you get some interesting results. I watched it copy a station calling CQ as NNGT NNGT. There are a ton of free CW software apps out there. If I look at the audio Volume Mixer in Windows I have one device, speakers, which is set for (speakers, Realtek High Definition Audio). The applications that are present under the volume mixer window are System sounds, CommCat spot manager, Mozilla Firefox, and Flex Radio Systems PowerSDR. [Flexradio] Killing Zombies so they Stay Dead; was CAT problem partially solved
I have had the same problem with Eltima ports. I call them Elvira ports because they remind me of the gal from the Adams Family. Usually when I have problems with these it's because I did something wrong and reinstalled one copy of the program on top of another. The problem is that VSPMgr ports show up in the Device Manager as well as in the registry. If you use the uninstall command from Control Panel, it will uninstall everything including port references in the registry - unless - you have installed the program without completely deleting the old copy first. If you do, it makes duplicate Windows registry entries that screw up everything and cause the deleted ports to reappear in Device Manager. To solve the problem with out buying a new computer, I did the following. Uninstall VspMgr using Windows Control Panel Go into Device Manager and remove any remaining Eltima ports. Go into RegEdit from the Start menu. Search for Eltima. Delete each occurrence manually. If you have a registry cleaner, run it. It may get rid of some stray entries that were associated with VSPMgr. Reboot Check device manager. You should have no zombies. Re: [Flexradio] Hand Key with 1500
I spent 10 years as a Navy Morse intercept operator. I learned to detect the difference in operator patterns regardless of what instrument of death the sender was using - key, keyer, or bug. However, it is much easier to detect individual keying habits with a straight key or a semi-automatic key or bug. One thing I hate to this date is the swing, and extended dah accenting one of the characters. In the day, Morse instructors would question our sexual identity if we sent with a swing. The nice, neat, rhythmic precision is like music to my ears. Even my dogs love it. My XYL, on the other hand, like your mom, hates it. I was digging through a dumpster out behind the Flex Radio offices and came upon the following information scrawled on a notepad, heavily stained by what looked like a chili-cheese burrito. It appears that these forward looking statements may give us some insight into what to expect from the next release of power SDR. Integrated data decoder utility very much like DDUtil only with 32 control ports and the ability to switch between three different rigs. The rotor control window also has settings to interface with a garage door opener and a beer dispenser. Voice to CW converter. When the selected mode is USB or LSB and VFO-A is in the CW portion of any band, speak into the mic and PSDR sends out perfect code, speed and weight adjustable by the operator. No-code extras will now be know-code extras. Automatic Error Detection with Instant Online Support. As soon as a crash or error is detected, a Skype video call is instantly made by PSDR to Tim or Dudley’s office, home, or cell phone. You don’t even need to be in the shack – Team Viewer pops up and they just fix whatever went wrong, sending you an e-mail when it’s all better. Support for a new wireless Flex Control device identical to the Nintendo Wii. Now you can work that 20-meter pileup and take a few inches off that gut at the same time. So there you have it. [Flexradio] Flex 1500 using External Transmitter for AM
”Why would anyone use ham radio when it would be so much easier just to use a telephone?” 73 de Mike W9OJ Okay Mike, you started it. Picture this random telephone call: Hello. Um, good morning. This is W6SDM in Maricopa, Arizona. Yes, that’s in the United States. Oh, I’m sorry you feel that way about Americans. My name is Steve. I’m a ham radio operator. No, no, not that kind of ham. I realize you’re Muslim but this has nothing to do with pigs. Oh – It’s 2 AM there? I’m sorry – I didn’t look at the clock. Tell you what, if you give me a quick signal report, I will let you get back to sleep. You see, I haven’t worked Syria yet and I would really like to get a telephone endorsement for my DXCC. What? Now wait, this has nothing to do with my mother and I don’t own a dog. And that’s why we use ham radio instead of the telephone. 73 and Happy New Year. [Flexradio] Loss of Audio
n...@cableone.netLeon, Is it a complete loss of audio or is it attenuated audio? I had a similar problem with my Flex 3000. After transmitting it would sometimes come back attenuated about 50%. This was on CW/Phone, all bands. Tripping the PTT by hitting the foot switch, the key, or the tune button brought it back. Even working with tech support, and after a couple of database resets, we decided it was a bad T/R relay in the Flex. I waited to send it back until I got my 5000. When the 5000 arrived, I swapped the transceivers out, the 5000 did the same thing. I narrowed the problem down to a bad relay in my Ameritron 811. It wasn't really attenuating audio, it was attenuating RF. Now, if this isn't your situation, you may want to swap out the speakers if you can. You may also want to listen to the Flex audio through the sound card instead of the power speakers just to see where you are losing the signal. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
[Flexradio] Is the a Flex counterculture?
This came from the *Southgate Amateur Radio News*. My question is, is there a Flex counterculture similar to what we saw in the early days of Apple? Being part of the Silicon Valley community back in those days, I would say that I see many parallels. People would buy Apple ][ machines and then immediately try to find ways to do new things and push the performance envelope. There were product-specific computer bulletin boards, user's groups, and newsletters. Where the Z80-based machines were more business and science, Apple was more about creativity and fun. Unfortunately for me, I was not on the Apple side of things. This is from the article: *Radio amateur and Apple co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak WA6BND was interviewed on the BBC radio show Today on December 14 and now on the web.* * * *In it he says allowing a counterculture to develop is vital to creating companies that will revolutionise an industry.* * * *Speaking to Evan Davis about his former business partner Steve Jobs, he said that allowing creativity in the early days of Apple was far more important than how you dressed or the length of your hair.* * * *He told the show that structured societies tend to stifle the kind of innovation that helps create hi-tech heaven.* http://www.southgatearc.org/news/december2011/steve_wozniak_wa6bnd_on_bbc_radio_and_tv.htm?utm_source=feedburnerutm_medium=emailutm_campaign=Feed%3A+AmateurRadioNews+%28Southgate+Amateur+Radio+News%29 73 from a proud two Flex owner, -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
[Flexradio] One or Two Computers?
I am of the multiple computer persuasion when it comes to Flex. Computers are cheap. I have two very capable quad core machines that each cost me under $500. I can easily spend that much on tubes for the amp. Considering that the Flex radios cost anywhere from a third to half of what a good contest radio runs and, in my opinion, is equally if not more capable, why not spring for the second computer? When you dedicate a single computer to the Flex: - It causes less problems in the long run. - It makes troubleshooting one hell of a lot easier without a bunch of non-Flex-related processes and services hanging around. - There is a lot less stuff in the registry to make things slow down or go wrong. - Monitor real estate is always at a premium with Flex, loggers, spotters/cluster monitors, digital mode software, etc. Why add an internet browser and whatever else to that? - Most of us tweak the radio and antenna system for optimum performance so that we can go after that contact that is just above the noise. Why compromise performance to save a few hundred bucks? Of course, the Flex share the system with a lot of other stuff and, in many cases, work fine. But if you want 100% peak performance, give the Flex it's own capable computer. [Flexradio] The Mystery of AppData
If you are someone who has modified their skins, you already know this. Or, if you are a Windows guru, this is nothing new. However, I have seen questions asked recently that this would answer, so I will provide this information for those who may benefit from it. Everyone should become aware of the %appdata% command, which is typed in from the start menu on Windows Vista and WIndows 7. Go ahead, type it and a file manager window will pop up. This is where all of the hidden goodies are kept. Why are they hidden? I believe it's Microsoft's way of protecting you from yourself. Even when you uninstall an application, there's a good chance that a directory created by that application remains in one of the AppData subdirectories. Files that were created by these programs, including setup instructions, documents, graphics, and logs are nestled away in sometimes cryptic directories that have hexidecimal names spanning hundreds of characters. The AppData directory is out of the reach of most disk cleaning utilities and out of sight of everyone except, now that you've read this, you. Many programs, including Flex, have directories in the Roaming subdirectory where files are kept. Flex has two, FlexRadio and FlexRadio Systems. FlexRadio contains the settings for Flex that you have created when you used the setup form. You really don't have any reason to muck about in this directory. However, FlexRadioSystems is a treasure chest of Flex files and history, including the ATU database and log, memories, the Firmware utilities, every previous version of PowerSDR that you haven't uninstalled, and finally, the Skins. So, go ahead and explore AppData. If you break anything, don't blame me. You're fine unless you start deleting stuff that you don't understand. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr
Thanks, Sheldon. That sounds like it may just do what I want. I run two Windows quad-core dual monitor computers in the shack. One is dedicated to the Flex and the things that connect via DDUtil. The other is for Internet and everything else. Being able to get some of the programs on the other computer would give me some additional monitor space. I see that there is a free trial option - I am going to set some time aside and check it out. 73, Steve W6SDM On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 5:10 AM, Sheldon Hartling hartl...@netpathinc.comwrote: Hi Steve Have a look at Serial to Ethernet Connector (SEC) from Eltima Software ( http://www.eltima.com). For Field Day this year I wanted to set up N1MM logging on a separate computer to eliminate the keyboard-focus problems that arise when two people try to use one PC. This year one person operated the PSDR/F3K on a MacBook while a another person logged on N1MM on a Thinkpad T60p. The connection between the computers was made using COM ports over TCP/IP. Before Field Day I evaluated 3 serial over TCP/IP solutions: KernelPro Advanced Virtual Com Port, Eltima SEC and EtherLogic VSPe. In the test environment I ran (HRD, N1MM and BobMeters) on one PC and (PSDR and a second copy of BobMeters) on a second PC. The clear winner was Eltima's SEC product. Eltima Software provides the virtual serial port technology that Steve Nance uses in his VSPMgr product. With SEC used to connect the two computers I could sweep the VFO on HRD on one PC and have everything track it with no visible lag even with two copies of BobMeters running! Now, in my shack, I use SEC as the backbone to connect everything. In addition to serial over TCP/IP it provides complete splitter functionality. I run one copy on the laptop connected to my F3K using ports 30, 31, 32, 33 and 34 and one copy on the desktop computer connected to my F5K using ports 50, 51, 52, 53 and 54. Ports 30 and 50 are the server ports and the rest are client ports. On any computer in the shack, if I want to connect to the F3K's COM port I pick a COM port in the 30 series (31, 32, …); If I want to connect to the F5K's COM port I pick a COM port in the 50 series (51, 52, …). Normally on my desktop I run HRD connected to COM port 51 and BobMeters connected to COM port 54 and PSDR connected to COM port 50. No splitter required. If I want to make a few contacts on my F3K running on a different computer I just change the connection on HRD (still running on my desktop) to port 31 – and now its connected to the F3K. By default each SEC server has 4 client ports but you can set up as many as you want. SEC is licensed software and is sold by Eltima Software in 2-license packs. 73, Sheldon VE1GPY From: W6SDM Steve dd.maricopa...@gmail.com Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2011 22:43:47 -0700 To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] VSPE and VSPMgr Someone told me once that the only stupid question was the one you didn't ask. If I start FxPad before either PowerSDR or DDUtil, I get a “PowerSDR off” message in FxPad. What I have to do to get it working is start PowerSDR, start FxPad, Start DDUtil, then go into FxPad setup and have it scan ports until it finds PowerSDR. At that point, everything’s fine. [Flexradio] Problem with FlexControl
I would think that if Neal couldn't fix it, nobody can. So, I am a little hesitant to jump in here as I am far from being a guru. Nevertheless, I did get my Flex Control working after having some VSP issues, so I will give it a try. I didn't have the same symptom you did but I did have problems getting things working. It seems that when I went to remove all of my virtual ports, they weren't really gone and it caused me a lot of grief. I also have a couple of hardware serial ports installed on my machine (Windows 7 Quad Core). Here is what I did: After using VSPmanager to uninstall all of your virtual ports... Go into Device Manager and determine that all virtual ports are actually gone. I used Registry Mechanic just to make sure nothing was lurking in the registry. Reboot. Verify in Device Manager that all of the virtual ports are, in fact, gone. (this is where my problem was - for some reason they didn't delete and I had to remove them one-by-one). Reinstall your virtual ports. I did mine starting with 10 just to make sure everything is out of the way. If I come across an app that absolutely needs a single-digit number, I will deal with it individually. Install your Flex Control and it should find it's port and operate happily ever after. I love mine. -- Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

[Flexradio] USB External Keypad Dedicated to Flex VFO
I am going to submit this as a feature request, but I also wanted to see if anyone else thinks it may be viable in the way that they operate, particularly in contests or DX. I use a USB external number keypad. I keep it in close proximity to my CW paddle and Flex Control. Provided that I have focus on PowerSDR, all I have to do is key in a frequency and hit enter to go immediately to that frequency. While one of my spotting software programs will tune to the DX frequency through CAT control, I may sometimes use more than one cluster. Or I may want to just go to a particular frequency for one reason or another. Of course, the problem is that you must have Windows focused on Flex in order for the keypad to work. Worst case is that I end up typing numbers into something that I don’t intend to like my logging or spotting software. So, what if the keypad could be dedicated to address the Flex VFO regardless of focus? Much like the Flex Control does on vernier tuning, the keypad could do on direct entry tuning. External keypads are cheap and readily available I have no idea what kind of programming or driver it would take – hopefully someone a lot more adept at these things than I am can figure that out. Is this a sensible feature request or have I had too much RF exposure? 73, Steve Miller w6sdm.net ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

It takes a lot of unnecessary effort to get to this file for anything other than a quick playback over the air. Of course sending the file over e-mail provides a much better diagnostic than playing it over the air in many cases. Also, it would be nice to be able to memorialize your QSO with that rare DX. [Flexradio] Gateway Laptop for Flex 3000
Tom, You got some good advice from Tim, a virtual Obi-Wan Kinobe of things Flex. Let me add one more thing: All 1394a cards are not created equal. Even with cards that pass the test and will work with Flex, some will work better than others. When I used the internal firewire port on my new HP Desktop, I was plagued with audio lockups and raspy sounding audio. Dudley advised me to find a card with the Texas Instruments chip set and that fixed most of my problems. Using the Granite firewire cable, which I bought from Flex, solved the rest. Now, while changing the cable is easy, the card is not an option with a laptop, so just be aware. Good luck and I am interested in seeing how your 3000 performs with your laptop. [Flexradio] Flex 3000 Lockuyp Solved (for me, at least)
I was having the exact problem with lockups. This has happened since I have owned my 3000. I figured it was something I had set wrong in either the computer or the Flex since I was still at the bottom of the learning curve. In a conversation with Dudley, he suggested that I take a look at my firewire adaptor. On my new HP Quad-core, this was integrated into the mother board and had the JMicron Technology Chipset, which was causing audio dropout and lockups of PowerSDR. I bought a SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIecard from Amazon.com for just over fourty bucks. It has the TI chipset, which apparently makes a big difference. It solved my problem completely. I also put in the Granite Digital firewire cable (available from Granite Digital or Flex). Here's the Amazon link for the card in case anyone else runs into this problem. [Flexradio] My Thoughts on Skin
And no, not that kind of skin. This is a family reflector. One of the most apparent improvements in PSDR 2.x is the addition of the adjustable GUI, aka “skins”.It’s one thing to have a great radio and another to have a great radio that looks great. Skins not only give us choices in how the radio looks but how we can make it look. With a little imagination and some graphic editor skills anything is possible. I have a 19-inch flat screen dedicated entirely to PSDR. Another 23-inch screen holds all the loggers, skimmers, and utilities that I use. Having a slick looking radio screen is really a plus and when you get tired of it you can change it. I think it would be fantastic if there were a skin-editing tutorial/manual. I am more than willing to collaborate on this project if someone good at skins wants to take it on. I expect that what we are going to see in the future are collections of “designer” skins that will fit most tastes. Hell, maybe somebody will design a skin that emulates a Collins KWM2 – that will keep all the old-timers happy J (including myself – I never could afford a KWM2). To me, the addition of this feature is a win-win. It would be nice to have the “classic original” look to the radio as an option even though I think that look is more representative of a Windows program than a ham radio transceiver.. Personally, I think the more options to suit everyone’s taste, the better. Now THAT’s something you don’t get from a “box” radio. Having a radio that’s flexible in both performance and appearance is really nothing new. In ham radio forty years ago, a large number of our rigs were hope brew, which is the epitome of personalization. -- Steve Miller W6SDM ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
