I use an SGC power cube amp, ability to not key amp on tune would be handy.

[Flexradio] External Antenna Tuner and AMP

2011-06-05 Thread Val Ballard
I want to connect a linear amp (AL-82) and a MFJ-998 automatic antenna tuner.
I am running a flex 5K with the flex tuner installed. I want to be sure that I
connect everything properly so that my equipment is not damaged. I am not
sure how to deselect the internal ATU in order to use the external automatic
tuner. Simplely unchecking the Use TUN check box on the ATU tab dosen't do the
job. I have looked through the knowledge center for information but didn’t find
what I needed. Any guidance you can provide on how to connect this
equipment will be appreciated.

What I was hoping was that I could disable the internal ATU and then use the
ATU button on the upper left of the screen to active the tuning operation with
the number of watts indicated in the Transmit/Tune setup form. Maybe there is a
better way.  There is so much to learn about this great system and so easy to

I just flip the amp to standby when I want to use TUN from the radio to tune

For remote operation that's a lot less convenient to do than if a simple

Re: [Flexradio] External Antenna Tuner and AMP

2011-06-05 Thread Ray, K9DUR
Brian,

Yep, that is the way I do it also.

I can see a situation where you would want the TX out line both enabled
disabled at the same time.

1. Switch amp to dummy load click Tune to tune up amp (I have a tube amp
-- not rich enough for one of those new-fangled no-tune solid-state ones) --
you would want TX line enabled to key amp.
2. Switch amp to antenna click Tune to trigger autotuner -- you would
want tuner disabled to tune using low power.

So, simplest solution is to always have TX out line always enabled switch
amp between Standby Operate. But I can see that some ops would want the
check box Gary is proposing.

Hi Val-- also, I set up the 998 tuner to auto-tune when it needs to. Set
the power for about 15 watts in By-pass/Tune. Works like a champ
remotely. It will be nice to command a manual tune. Eventually I'll
figure that out, using parallel port and extra lines not used by the bcd
the controls the amp.
