[Flexradio] Powerpoles
Colleagues, I recently decided to clean-up the wiring in my shack (and to prepare for arrival of my Flex-6700) by ordering a West Mountain Radio RigRunner that uses Powerpole connectors. In advance of receiving the unit, I was wondering if anyone using a Flex-3000 or Flex-5000 has crimped both AWG 12 lines onto a single 45 amp Powerpole connector, which is apparently designed to hold up to AWG 10 wire? Two AWG 12 wires together are somewhat larger than AWG 10 wire. The alternative, of course, is to crimp a connector onto each of the four power lines, but this uses-up extra connections on the RigRunner. Also, does anyone know if the Flex-6700 is supplied with a single AWG 10 power line or does it use parallel AWG 12 lines like the Flex-5000 and Flex-3000? Thanks in advance! Re: [Flexradio] Powerpoles
I have been thinking on this for the last week as I am also going to change out stuff to all Power Poles. What I see as a possible problem is on the Rig Runner are the Power Poles 45Amp or are they the thinner 30 or even 15 amp connectors? Looking at my BIG Rig Runner 8012 ALL the contacts look a lot thinner metal then are my 45 Amp contacts I have. I just pulled my RIG Runner apart and pulled a connector off and it looks like they are JUST 30 AMP. Contacts. SO for MYSELF I will NOT be using just one 45AMP Power pole but Rather two 30's instead on the Radio End unless I get a bug and try to modify my Rig Runner and replace the smaller Amperage contacts with a KNOWN value contact. 73's Bret WX7Y On Mon, Mar 18, 2013 at 12:15 PM, Ed Wilson ed.wil...@ymail.com wrote: Colleagues, I recently decided to clean-up the wiring in my shack (and to prepare for arrival of my Flex-6700) by ordering a West Mountain Radio RigRunner that uses Powerpole connectors. Re: [Flexradio] Powerpoles
That doesn't make any sense-- the actual contact portion of the Power Pole lug is the same on the 15, 30 45 amp versions. The only substantive difference is the size of wire that can crimped in. A 15 amp lug can carry 45 amps if you can attach a suitable wire to it. Obviously, it's best to use the correct lug for your wire size, but you don't need to worry about the current carrying capability of the lug itself. If you see differences in the contact portion of the lug in either the width, length or thickness of the contact area, is there a chance you got a Chinese knockoff? Re: [Flexradio] [FlexRadio] Powerpoles
Ed, That is correct. I have used all 3 sizes keep a stock of each size in my connector kit. The ONLY difference is the size of the end where the wire is inserted. You really should use the proper size contact for the wire size you are using to ensure proper crimping. Trying to cram too large a wire in too small a contact will result in some strands being cut off, resulting in a reduction in cross-sectional area reduced current handling capacity. It will also reduce the effectiveness of the crimp. Trying to crimp too small a wire into too large a contact will result in an inadequate crimp with a higher contact resistance between the wire the contact. You can actually pull a 16 gauge wire out of a 30-Amp contact with little effort. (I know this from experience.) As for using a RigRunner, I have taken mine out of line run the power cable for my FLEX-5000A directly to the power supply. I found that I had a voltage drop of approximately 1 Volt or more during transmit when running through the RigRunner. The Rigrunner adds a total of 8 pressure connections in the circuit to your device -- 2 PowerPole connections in the negative lead 2 PowerPole connections plus 4 fuse connections (2 fuses w/2 connections each) in the positive lead. These 8 additional connections add about .05 Ohm of contact resistance to yield a 1 volt drop at ~20 Amps. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Powerpoles
A Powerpole is not a Powerpole. There are many different styles of contacts in the PP14-45 series. They all interconnect, they do not all have the same ratings, retention force, etc. You can download a manufacturer's specification sheet here: http://www.andersonpower.com/products/singlepole-connectors.html The real issue before answering the original question is 'what PCB contact does West Mountain use in your model of RigRunner?'
