2012-04-08 Thread Bill Tynan
I don;t know anything about HF but last night I heard FK8CP on 6 meters. I
had already worked him so I didn't call. But, I worked KH7Y in HI with good
sigs. The night before, I worked KH6SX. But I missed out on working
VK9N/ZL1RS which is what I've been after for the past 2 weeks.

Flex 500a to a 3CX800 (800W) into an 11 eleven element M2 at 70 ft.

Kinda weird. Relatively quiet on the higher bands for long-distance DX,
but

tonight 3 hours after sunset on East Coast, worked E51M on 15, FK8DD and
A35XG on 12, and FK8CE on 10. My QTH is North Carolina, hex beam at 42
feet, 500 watts, Flex 3000. Can't remember the last time I worked any
long-distance DX (5000 miles) on 10 meters into Pacific that late after
sunset (3 hours after sunset). My electronic log says 1982, but I have
some

paper logs from West Coast operation in 1979 when I was able to work JA
around midnight Pacific on 10. But that was 1979, and I was right near
the

ocean...

For 12 meters, last time I worked Pacific that late after sunset was in
2010.

So...something is happening, just not sure what it is.

Paul, what are your operating parameters?

If you perceive that you might be having antenna problems, rig problems
or dead bands, you might want to check the real-time prop maps:
http://www.vhfdx.info/spots/map.php Then click on World or North
America (or whatever your preference), then HF and choose the band of
interest. This will give you a clue of activity in real-time. Right now,
2:00 PM EST, 20 meters is hot with activity.

As of 1818Z, I am hearing noise beneath some signals, but the bands are not
anything to write home about. 40 meters is doing OK (sort of).

10M was certainly dead this morning from the west coast anyway. Getting
ready to do a noon net on 40M soon.
