Re: [Flightgear-devel] Star Wars Mod :-)

2006-10-28 Thread Robin van Steenbergen
If there's any spacecraft I want to make a flight model for, it's
Serenity from Firefly. The interior and exterior model of the vessel is
actually based on real-world aviation. There is already a good 3D model
available on the net, and the only thing we need to make is the
aerodynamics.

As far as orbital graphics, Flight Simulator X has support for graphics
up to 1,000,000 feet, which is almost geostationary orbit. I'm already
working on some software that allows a Flight Simulator session to work
as a scenery renderer slaved to an external program.

Not even close -- geostationary orbits have radii on the order of
120,000,000 feet out. Heck, the Earth itself has a mean radius of
about 21,000,000 feet; so 1,000,000 feet up is definitely low-Earth
orbit (well below low-Earth orbits used for satellites, really)
with a very short period of more like an hour.

I think Douglas Adams summed it up in the best way:-

Space is big - really big - you just won't believe how vastly, hugely
mind-bogglingly big it is. You may think it's a long way down the road
to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space.

That would be great!

There's a lot of tech details in the net about Star Wars vehicles.
That's no real aerodinamics stuff, of course, but your imagination could
fill the gap :-)
Basic speed and attitude informations of such space vehicles could be
gathered around the net, a simple search on Google will bring up a lot
of fans ' websites and the official pages too. People seem to be crazy
at tech details of such scifi movies' characters.

Please, let me know if you really consider creating that flightmodel
you've mentioned. I'm currently playing with the UFO flightmodel, a
fully functional space vehicle flightmodel would be super cool :-)

I did that one just for fun, I will add a few textures and the lights. I
could also spend some time on learning how to let the vehicle parts move
with proper animations.

   cheers,
Roberto

The JSBSim FDM can achieve orbit (I've done it using it outside of

handle it.

Last I tried, the graphics are not there. Could be interesting to use
FlightGear as a satellite launching simulator.
