This works with absolut no problems with openSUSE 10.x Linux and Win$ XP as a normal USB joystick is simulated. In FlightGear you just copy the four-axis-joystick.xml file to JoyWarrior.xml and after appending the USB-name of the interface into this file like (example!) PropertyList nameCode Mercenaries JoyWarrior24RC/name axis n=0 you leave it as FlightGear/data/Input/Joysticks/Default/JoyWarrior.xml or put it into a separate folder like JoyWarriorChip. If you never did any successful :D electronic soldering you should better search the internet to buy a already build commercial solution which is also available. But building it yourself is cheap (PIC price at that time 13.60 EUR + some cheap other parts) and fast. Hall sensors are non-contact so there is no wear, and give a 0-4V output with a 5V input that is much like a pot (5V GND and Out instead of Wiper). I have been working with Hall sensor throttles for e-bikes and e-motorcycles and they seem pretty bulletproof. Is there any reason not to use Hall sensors instead of pots with a USB encoder? BTW I'm on Linspire Linux. Hi John, I bought one of the first SIMPED Pedals many, many years ago which are working with a magnetic Hall sensor. First I used it with Win98 and the Gameport, then with a cheap (16 EUR) gameport to usb-converter and Win XP, since 1 1/2 year with the gameport to usb-converter and OpenSUSE 10.1/10.2. I used it for many, many years nearly every day some hours (!), I really can't count the total time. After once calibrating the hardware mid-point value (at the pedals) I only touched them for cleaning. So this concept using a Hall sensor seems pretty fine for me, I would like to have such advanced tec in my joystick. Generally I am very satisfied with my Saitek X45 as it was really cheap at that time I bought it, but the main problem is the cross-mechanic transfering the stick movement to the potentiometers. This is not precise enough and therfore you have a pretty uncomfortable Null-Zone when hovering the helos. I improved this a little but a Hall sensor would be perfect for a helo simmer (if it works like my pedals, NO nullzone!). So, I would be very interested if you would build such a joystick and could get a wiring diagram from you. I constructed and built a lot of electronic stuff when I was younger and some time ago built my own R/C-transmitter - USB joystick interface from a wiring diagram (which works fine!). So might be I could improve my old Saitek with Hall sensors. Re: [Flightgear-users] Issues with Saitek Joysticks
Hi Melchior, first thank you for this big help, your hint is a big step forward although not all is working here as it might: .. Same here with another USB joystick. I've solved that like this: jscal generated calibration script saved to /etc/jscal.sh: # jscal -p /dev/input/js0 /etc/jscal.sh chmod 700 /etc/jscal.sh This was the first to solve. If I use the above command line (after first calibrating the joystick with # jscal -c /dev/input/js0) only an empty (0 bytes) jscal.sh was written to the right place. When I splitted the command line into # jscal -p /dev/input/js0 /etc/jscal.sh # chmod 700 /etc/jscal.sh all the information was written (136 byte). I compared the console-output of # jscal -p /dev/input/js0 and it is the same dataset. Advised udevd to run the calibration script whenever the js is detected, by changing this line in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules: -KERNEL==js*, NAME=input/%k, MODE=0644 +KERNEL==js*, NAME=input/%k, MODE=0644, RUN+=/etc/jscal.sh These are the changed lines of 50-udev-default.rules (only to show, I got it right): # KERNEL==js*,NAME=input/%k, MODE=0644 KERNEL==js*, NAME=input/%k, MODE=0644, RUN+=/etc/jscal.sh *but* this does not do anything! After reboot the joystick is not calibrated, also if I un/plug it. What works is running ./jscal.sh manually. :-) My plan is to give jscal.sh user-right and put a link on my Desktop. Then it is only one mouseclick and spares a lot of time. Did not test it but this should work. I don't know why these two things (writing jscal.sh with in the command-line and starting jscal.sh from 50-udev-default.rules) do not work. Anyhow, thank you once again, also with a only a part of your solution I get it really more comfortable from now! Regards Georg - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. It is NOT a *visual* problem, then 60 Hz on a LCD is really golden. The problem I am feeling at my PC is that with VSync ON and LOW VSync rates the general performance of FlightGear is worser, even the helicopter flightmodel *seems* not to be as smooth as with HIGHER VSync rates in my graphiccard setup. I explained this to myself that it *might* be that the FlightGear program is loosing time and with that performance ALSO for other tasks like scenery rendering, flightmodel etc. by waiting for the next frame to display IF you have a fast PC-system AND your vertical sync rate is rather LOW. But this is just a feeling I had when I started to solve the without VSync stuttering problem and tested different setups of my graphic card. A higher VSync rate would reduce these waiting cycles after my opinion. But it would be very interesting to get an answer from a real FG specialist whether FG really is loosing overall performance when synchronized down to a low VSync rate with a high performance PC system. (this is the normal place and the path I put into my files) and not in Models/fgsdb/Models/f00gsdb as you set it. When it works for you, have a look at the differences. If you are interested to create more AI-files, do it the easy way. Have a look at FGTools, the AI-page. Use the Ufo to make waypoints (just by setting the cursor there), then read the ufo-xml-file with FGTools and convert it into an AI-File. You can set some parameters and edit it by hand later, if you want (ie different speed per waypoint). Creating the other file and handling preferences.xml is also done pretty easy with FGTools. The replacement files I posted should not work with the current cvs and they should be the ones that are causing the Nasal errors. These files are compatible with the version in cvs several months ago. Since the current cvs pa24 gives the Nasal errors and the old Nasal files work, I must assume that you are launching an old binary w/o knowing it. You indicated you are using OpenSuse 10.2 x86_64. Is it possible that this distribution has a FlightGear-0.9.10 binary that is running when you think you are running the current cvs? How are you launching fgfs? Hi Dave, 1. there are no default FG binaries delivered with OpenSuse 2. I have two different binaries on my system - FG OSG and FG PLIB. 3. What I am running is very easy to differentiate by the display of some structures (ie. trees) I have in my sceneries (and 3D clouds, airplane shadows, etc) 4. I start FG OSG and FG PLIB either by its own FGTools program with the right pathes selected once and never changed (a new CVS compile only changes the binary, not the address) 5. I deleted the PA24-250 folder completely and made a cvs update -dP for the data folder as for the sources folder of SimGear and FG 6. I did not start this discussion, I just added that I had the same problem to back the user who was telling you his problems. 7. As there is no other user complaining about that problem, don't worry about it anymore. The PA24-250 does work for me very fine *with* your patches and for all the rest of the FlightGear world *without* them. So it might be a mysterious phenomenon not understandable for us :-) 8. At least on Fedora, you've never needed full kernel source installed to install the NV drivers. As of FC6, the nvidia drivers install ontop of a stock FC6 install. I have had SELinux issues in past versions of FC where the extra protection prevented the nvidia drivers from being able to load/run, but there are selinux commands you can run to unprotect the individual libs. Regards, Curt. Hi, just to add another view: I upgraded my OpenSUSE 10.1 x86_64 to 10.2 end of December 2006 and had absolute no problems. During the upgrade process you are asked to keep or reinstall a lot of stuff which is found and I decided to reinstall nearly all except Wine, Lazarus and other programs from outside. I was very surprised that even Wine worked as before the upgrade. Naturally I had to install all not OpenSource drivers which is a decision of the OpenSUSE developers not to support this stuff. One of them was the NVidia driver which worked very fine afterwards. I remember that there is a step for step installation manual from NVidia and on one Wiki site which I followed very carefully. There was absolutely no need to compile any kernel source or something like that - I would have given up at this point as an absolutely Linux n00b. Only to add, I had to reinstall all that additional stuff you need to compile FlightGear (CVS) but this was very easy using the YAST system. So there might be two sides of the medal, I got the lucky one :-) Regards Georg EDDW - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Your nasal patches solve the problem, I just made a little testflight. This is on OpenSuse 10.2 x86_64. Hi Donn, Very strange??? The only changes in the two files that you say work are 1) replace setlistener(/sim/signals/fdm-initialized, init_electrical); with settimer(init_electrical, 0); at the end of pa24-electrical.nas, and 2) back out 4 instances of [nn, mm] in aircraft.light.new, replacing them with just the ordered pair nn, mm. The first makes sure that init_electrical is called independent of the fdm-initialized. This allows the electrical system to be initialized on most systems running fgfs from before Melchior Franz added the fdm-initialized call. The second variable change in aircraft.light.new was made by Melchior about a month ago. You must have an older fgfs binary that is being used instead of your new compile when you launch fgfs. If you still have the two cvs nas files, check the log window for Nasal Electrical System Initialized when you cannot start the pa24. If it is not there, the setlistener is not calling init_electrical because the value of fdm-initialized is never changed. Another check would be to use the pa24-electrical.nas file with settimer and the cvs version of pa24.nas together. If you are running a binary from before Melchior's data format change, the brackets will cause a number of nasal errors. I updated SimGear, source, and data from the osg branch just last night. Since I was checking that pa24 recent changes were correct, I deleted the pa24 before the updates and compiles. All is working here. Hi Dave, you checked that we are *two* different user who had the same problem? The last reply wasn't from Donn it was from me, Georg. Re: [Flightgear-users] FGTools for Linux only for 64bit now
Hi Sid, also to you like to all other nice people trying FGTools/Linux and giving feedback to me a big thank you for testing! Reading from the digest, I'd advise against installing the 32-bit distro on the 64-bit box. Yes, thank you for the advice. And it would be a shame as the 64bit system runs like a rabbit. I am very satisfied with OpenSuse 10.1 x86_64 although it is pretty clear that (except the FGTools desaster) some problems with the O/S (better to say: some solutions to find) made me get some more gray hairs. :-) But I would not change back anymore. Never had such a stable system as the WinXP SP2 did not work very well with my new PC hardware. I had to use a new Sata hd combined with an old IDE hd because this has another 120 GB, I had some serious data losses with XP. Although I am now really *working* with the OpenSUSE system, trying a lot of the new stuff, setting up compilers and compiling systems (like for FlightGear), downloading a lot and making a lot of errors (means trouble for the O/S) as I am such a n00b I love the system for its *stability*, *security* and *trustworthiness*. No new thrilling information for an old Linux guy like most of you, but exciting for me :-) If you can't get 32-bit binaries built, I'd say forget it and let someone with the skills do it in c++. With 10.1 x86_64 installed, you can build 32-bit binaries. I don't know if it's possible with pascal, but gcc has a -m32 option, configure options --libdir=32 --libsuffix=32 are also available. I will ask the Lazarus developers as soon as I have some time. They should know why my checking the i386 compiler option did not work.Might be I have to install some other libraries (32bit) or something like that. On my Athlon 64x2 I got a floating point exception, I'll collect the data later. As the binary is 64-bit, as pointed out, it will not run on 32-bit, I didn't even attempt it after this check. # file fgtoolsv13-48 fgtoolsv13-48: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, stripped Yes, all testers reported this. And Hal V. Engel did some more work behind that and wrote a very long list what did not work on his system even when he got it running due to unexpected dependencies. I thought it to be a complete run alone due to its big size (two times bigger than the stand alone Windows compile) but it is *not*. I now deleted the Linux stuff from my homepage until I get a 32bit working output sometimes in the future. Thank you once again, I learned a lot from this constructive feedback! I found that shared library problems are worst on Linux than on Windoze. So many distributions, so many vendors and so many different versions around ( just look the number of different GCC version with their different ABI and different level of C++ compliance ), that, without special care, an executable usually only works on the distro it has been build for. Thank you for the explanation. What I learned is that it is not only the 32/64bit Problem (what could be solved without big problems) but that Linux-A is not equal to Linux-B and that it seems not possible to compile *one* executive program which runs without problems under all Linux versions. I did not know that until now, otherwise I would have been more careful. BTW: is FGTools Open Source ? *Yes* in the sense that everone on the list can get the code from me without any copyrights and can do with it what he wants. Just drop me a mail. As I NEVER had the intention to make a project but only to SHARE my personal tools as ready-to-run-programs - like the Win32 FGTools is - nobody should look for structured code, English comments or any more professional way one would go if code-sharing is intended. The core of this program is still a FLY! 2 toolkit I wrote over the years before I came to FlightGear. I could use many parts as the basic structures of FLY! 2 and FlightGear are pretty similar. And I never planned anything. I started with the problem how to start FlightGear and Atlas with one keypress at the same time with special parameters from the Win XP GUI - FGRun did not support that at this time as it might now do. The next was I need a helper for model placement. No manual calculations which STG file to use, no manual editing of the STG files, easy backup of the edited STG files, etc. Then it was making AI-files without big work, now I am working on semiautomatic creation of buildings, writing the *.ac files from some simple inputs (length, width, height, flat roof or other roofs ...). So FGTools only represents some solutions for repeating work to do to save time and energy - I am a real lazy guy! One thing left: the core-code of FGTools would be available now - some external routines had to cut out of big libraries from projects I am working on for my job - they are not free as a whole but I would cut out the FGTools associated functions and put them into a new library. This could last some time as I now want to finish some scenery projects I am still working on for a longer time. *No* in the meaning that I would publish the code for a wider audience. Ok, the biggest book is from the year 2000 for SuSE 6.4 and the other from 1999 but the *basics* are all the same, pretty nice that Linux gets better and better (and if you want it - like me - more comfortable with modern GUI) but you can use all that 6 year old stuff to get better knowledge and solve problems - especially what you can do with all that console commands, etc. You can get a lot of help and information online but I am a sort of old dino and like to work with a good book, make my own notes into it, etc. And - very important for me - all the time you spend now to learn is not lost, it will be very valuable even with XX Linux version 2010! No comparison to all these Windows versions, I threw all the books away whenever a new version came out, background-things changed a lot. So Craig, give Linux a chance. After 14 days working with OpenSUSE very intensive I am fully conviced that this is my O/S from now on. To be honest, there are some things I dislike. But I dislike much more all these data-losses I had under Win XP SP2 during the last year. I never had such a stable working system like I have now. There are some Linux programs which are buggy, I even had to note that one blocked my PC fully, but all this did not result in data-loss! Regards Georg - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Strange that all other devices, webcam, digital camera, printer, card reader, USB HD and scanner don't need such intervention - this came on after the change of the hid input layer back in 2.6.1x. Ahh that explains my problem some more. This is strange as I would have expected hot swapping to fail before boot device detection! I don't know why but my SUSE 10.1 doesn't seem to let Flightgear see the Yoke as I've got no controls at all at present. Might be time to get the CVS and build it locally Craig I have a *similar* problem with my usb-joystick, not the same. To get it recognized I had to do a trick - assign a (any) usb-device (I used a Logitech Gamepad USB) to my onboard soundcard (gameport) with YAST. Then my HID 0583:2032 (/dev/input/js0) joystick gets recognized by the KDE Kontrollzentrum (= controll-center), can be calibrated there and works fine. Although it is then present after every reboot of the PC (without that described un-/replugging) the calibration values are lost and I have to calibrate it everytime I have a new PC startup. And I had it lost once I did a very long flight - the device got uncalibrated and the airplane crashed. I already made a bug-report to the KDE people, they might be the wrong ones if it is a SUSE system problem. Ok, I have to look for a SUSE bug-report then, as you possibly did already. Regards Georg @Craig: I am still converting some of the FGTools functions and was wrong when I thought this would be a question of *hours*. This is true for 95% of the code. But for the rest it is a question of *days* for a Linux n00b. To find out how to access the users home directory automatically (to read the UFO-export-XML-file by FGTools and let it do all that automated things) when the Lazarus functions cannot use the '~' sign was a real task. Now I learned to read the environment-variable HOME by a special function. So there is a big delay! But work goes on. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Flightgear-users] OpenSUSE 10.1, compiling FG CVS
Hi, any newbee to (Open)SUSE 10.1 who is interested to get a tutorial how to get a running CVS FlightGear compilation working should have a look at the FG Wiki http://hellosimon.org/flightgear_wiki/index.php?title=OpenSUSE_10.1 This is how I prepared the OpenSuse 10.1 system, what programs and datas are needed, where and how to get all and how to compile. I started to work with OpenSuse seriously a short time ago and it took me a lot of time and energy to learn all what is needed. This tutorial should make life easier for other n00bs like me. When I developed this tool it was for Win32 and Cygwin and I had no clue about the specific Linux needs. Now a lot of it is done and I already can use it to start the program and - more important - do all that model and scenery administration as I am now developing with Blender and Gimp under OpenSuse - this is luckily no change to Win32! After making one important function work under Linux (creating an airport selection file which is needed by the FGTools GUI, I just copied the Win32 one to Linux for my own needs) I could upload it to my homepage if you are interested. Then you could test whether it works for you. It is less than an Alpha as not all pages/functions are converted but you could work with all the important ones - I will give you a short instruction what works and what not. Just give a feedback. [Flightgear-users] Sid Boyce, can you help me please - FG CVS, SUSE 10.1
It's best to use CVS versions wherever possible, CVS freeglut works just fine. I've built RPM's for x86 and will have to check to see if they are still around as I changed hard drives a while back and they may be on the old one. Earlier today I built and installed everything on an Athlon 64x2 box with openSuSE 10.1 x86_64, the full set of RPM's generated with checkinstall and working. freealut-1.1.0.tar.gz and openal-0.0.8.tar.gz had to be used, though to build openal, it needed openal.xpm one directory up, so I had to copy it over from an earlier download - openal is looking a bit untidy with regards to Linux, they seem to be concentrating more heavily on Windows and OSX, may be SDL is the way to go. I am using plib that I built from CVS on 13th. August. The build instructions for FlightGear are quite straightforward, but it needs careful attention especially with regards to freealut, freeglut and openal, SimGear and FlightGear pose no problems. I am very glad to get such a precise explaination and copied and printed his reply immediately for my archive :-) But as for me this is one step to far - although I tried several Linux distributions over the last year the only thing I could install without any problems was TORCS (the racing car sim). To compile FG was far behind my scope. Now I am back to SuSe as this seems the best Linux distro for me now - all my special hardware was recognized automatically and runs fine (ie. Kubuntu could not handle). Now I am making another try to get FG running under Linux (SuSe 10.1). Melchior Franz postet a link for FG *.rpm for SuSe 10.0 some time ago on the German FlightGear Forum. Although this link is not valid (partially) anymore, I followed the base-link and found *.rpm for Suse 10.1 http://repos.opensuse.org/home:/lmich/SUSE_Linux_10.1/repodata/ When I tried to install with Yast there were unsolved dependencies: openAl and plib and FG data. The first two could be solved easily be installing them from the SuSe installation disks (with Yast). The third is a real problem for me, of course I have all the FG data but a) I don't know where to place them in SuSe Linux b) I don't know how the installer gets knowledge of the place I put it (dependency error) c) One must have the matching data to the FG main program compilation So I download the data from the same link as above and hope that it installs to the right place itself. As this process is very slow (I have a fast DSL connection, but the server is very slow) I cannot say anything about the result now (have to download some hours more). If you try this way it would be very nice if you can tell me whether you were lucky or not (= get a running FG install). You may contact me off list but I think this problems (and the solution) are of interest for other Linux newbees as well, so we should use this mailing list. All the best, hope this helps a little - and thank you Donn Washburn for your hints, will be of big value for step 2! Regards Georg HeliFlyer EDDW - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Re: [Flightgear-users] dehavilland - for Andrew Gorman
You might have gathered from some of my posts that I am a big fan of your FGTools and shall continue to use it Cheer :-D ene Hi Dene, thank you very much for the compliments :-) Ok, you and Andrew have at least used it at some time. But there was absolutely no other feedback, either good or bad. So I think there is not that big common interest among Windows user for it. Development-time splits into different parts - coding, user GUI/help/security and documentation. You need a lot more time for the two last parts when coding is already finished and it works fine. This makes only sense if there is an interest for the tool in the community. I decided better to improve the local scenery within the next months. This will be more profitable for the FlightGear community, at least for all these flying in Europe. I'm considering doing a little experimental programming for my own benefit, and want to take a crack at (for starting) static models and simple objects. What are some good formats for this? 2. What are some other good libraries for using them? I'm not very good at using other people's libraries, and I need some practice. I'm on a Wintendo, and it's an older one at that. (Is OpenSG comparable, or are they completely different?) 3. How does plib compare to these other libraries? 4. Could someone with some experience give me a short breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of the various model formats they know? Thanks, JD Hi JD, I myself started only some months ago with doing some 3D-modelling for local objects. My skills are very limited until now but I am sure that I will have created a lot of buildings and landmarks until the end of this year. Because I was very sure about this plan I decided to use Blender, an OpenSource and therefore free 3D-graphic-modelling-program. It was the same sort of decision which made me change from commercial flightsims to FlightGear in August,2005: I want my work preserved for the future, because I don't like throwing something to waste because a company decides to change data-formats without documentation OR decides not to go on with a next version of the program due to commercial decisions. And because there is a community around the developers and users have to chance to take influence on decisions and (if they are very lucky) a personal wish will get realized, ie. a new function is implemented into the program. And because Blender fits very well with FlightGear (as well as AC3D) with the *.ac format which one *should* use for FlightGear models. The disadvantage is that Blender is very user unfriendly from the GUI, at least for us Windows-user. AC3D is *a lot* easier to use at the beginning, but as I discovered after working through some manuals and tutorials, if you understand some of the principles and the philosophy of Blender it is as easy to use for the basic functions (I only refer to the basic functions as I am not so far with my skills and knowledge to decide about the advanced ones). I'm an experienced modellor so I decided to experiment making planes. What I found was that though FG uses PLIB and can in theory use any of the supported formats, the ony one I could successfully get into FG was *.ac (AC3D). While *.obj and *.3ds formats show up, their textures do not. Now, this is not to say that you have to use AC3D to make models (in fact there was--don't know if it is still the case--a few version differences in the AC3D format that AC3D creates and FG expects). I used Wings3d for modelling and used Blender to convert to the final *.ac format. In addition, I used Ultimate Unwrap for creating the UV maps (e.g., applying the textures to the model) and The Gimp for the graphics work. So you can use a medley of tools, if you wish. You'll also need a good text editor. Once you get the hang of editing the XML by hand there's nothing quicker. Also, since *.ac is an ascii based format you can correct a multitude of modelling sins by delving into the code. Takes some patience to learn but it is the most efficient. Though it's out of date, I was chronicling my FG adventure at my site: www.static-lift.net. --jeff Jeff, thank you, I will look at your site. AC3D is good, nothing against it. But no doubt, many aircraft for FlightGear have been designed with Blender the last time (output of course in *.ac). Looking forward for your first model! W-key (or alternatively menu mesh - edges - subdive) select subdivide from the pop-up menu (for 1 new vertex) select subdivide and number (for several new vertices) 5. A-key 6. But when starting from Windows there is no sound problem! Ok that is the same error I am seeing then. I have downloaded the OpenAL stuff via svn to see if I can compile it in cygwin - but the svn forma is so different from plain old cvs I am going to have to get on the openal list to figure what to autogen, configure and compile. Remark: This is the tutorial which Kevin sent to me before finishing his published one which I don't have now. Okay that looks a lot like the last page of what I was using - I think I see what he was doing now - he was giving directions for Cygwin and then also for Win32 at the same time. Those are not necessarily all instructions for one system. Brian, just a last one - I think you are misunderstanding something! I presume that you are using CYGWIN under Windows XP - right? THEN you MUST have the OpenAL.dll in your Windows XP system folder - at least for me here it does not work without it! (must copy /usr/local/bin/openal32.dll to Win32 system directory) Believe me, I NEVER did anything else with the OpenAL system than extracting (under CYGWIN!!!) this special cyg_openAL.tgz (which puts all these OpenAL stuff into CYGWIN usr\local\include\AL\, ie. al.h, alc.h,etc and to CYGWIN usr\local\lib}\, ie libopenal32.a, etc) and copying the Windows32 OpenAL RUNTIME stuff (openal32.dll) as described. I am using FlightGear CVS under CYGWIN since a long time and never had any problems with the sound system, I only recognized this error-message because you asked me :-) AND .. you don't even need to fire CYGWIN to run the compiled FlightGear program. I start it from the Windows XP GUI with my FGTools program (which I coded for this use) BUT you can also use at *.bat file or the Windows XP commandline to start Cygwin-FlightGear :-) - it even works without a full Cygwin install, you only must have some *.dlls and the pathes set right (but this is another theme, just mentioned it to make clear that you only need the full Cygwin system to COMPILE the stuff and hold your CVS system updated). So it is a MIX of two systems if you use FlightGear compiled under Cygwin running under Windows. There might be other possibilities how to handle all this CYGWIN stuff - at last, to finish the discussion, I can only tell you THAT IT REALLY WORKS if you follow the tutorial step for step! [Flightgear-users] Bremen-Weser VFR demo scenery now available for download
Hi all, as many of us will have some time for FlightGear next weekend I decided to upload my Bremen-Weser demo-scenery so that you might have a nice flight over my homeland. Before uploading you my have a preview of the enclosed *.pdf manual here in *.html format: http://home.arcor.de/vollnhals-bremen/BremenWeserScenery/HBWSHTLM/BremenWeserScenery.html This is the link to the package (ReadMe.txt and *.pdf manual enclosed with instructions): http://home.arcor.de/vollnhals-bremen/BremenWeserScenery/BremenWeserScenery.zip This is a work which has just started (see history in manual) and will be refined in many aspects within the next year - better models (real life copies), textures, AI traffic and flight-instructions not only for Bremen but for the Northern area. I upload this very simple work though due to 3 reasons a) to show other FlightGear users what can be done with generic models to improve the FlightGear world and motivate them to do some work for their local area. b) to demonstrate that it is easy without big knowledge if one uses the new FGTools version (uploaded within the next 2 weeks) and the outstanding new UFO functions for model placement we have now. c) just for fun for those FG friends who like flying over a more complete scenery (see flight instruction) Have fun, give feedback if you like (the best would be if you do some work yourself and share with us :-) ) Regards Georg EDDW (Heliflyer) --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: 4. Finally, I am planning to improve the scenery of a few places I love to fly around by adding some objects. I surely will build a few myself. However to help expedite this effort, I can see another way too: I saw a number of STATIC objects in FGFSDB, that can be modified in minor ways, or reused elsewhere by some re-scaling/coloring etc only. Hi Yavuz, this is just the way I started my Bremen-Weser scenery some short time ago. I was afraid of Blender and therefore I first took some objects I found in the FG library, changed the colors, hardened the surface, eliminated parts of the object (could do this with a simple text-editor), then I started learning Blender with changing existing objects in Blender, combining objects in Blender, etc .. and at last, after getting really hot on the stuff and reading through some manuals I created my first in real life existing power station with textures from own photographs. This is what I recommended in the German FlightGear Forum for other user: Create a (textured) hangar for X-Plane in Blender, is identical for FlightGear until the export into another format (very nice!): http://marginal.org.uk/x-planescenery/ Common links http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D/Noob_to_Pro http://www.blender3d.org/_media/education/quickstart/Texturing_Castle.html http://www.blender3d.org/Education/index_old.php?sub= Is this allowed? Do I need to get permissions from the authors? If so, is posting here a request the best way? This is how I understand the license a) If you take an existing model and modify it so that the product is another model (you don't change the original model! but create an additional new one), just do it without asking. This is the spirit we all can learn and profit from each other and my upcoming Bremen-Weser scenery is what I want to call a demo how you can use existing models, change them and use them to populate another part of the FlightGear world - at least until you have the time and energy to create more realistic ones later. b) If you take an existing model and want to improve, refine it or make it better looking or more realistic (changes on an existing one without creating real other version of it) - it is very good style to ask the author (if he is still active for FG)! This is what everyone can await who spend his time and energy for our common FlightGear project :-) Thanks for listening. Yavuz Onder c) If you made some models for the part of the world you are living in, don't mind to share them with us even when you have the opinon the are not worth doing so. Reuse rules/implied-licenses as you stated are as reasonable as one would expect. I will follow them. I will put up any object, I consider an improvement. And first of them may come soon. If I can stop myself trying to tweak it here and there. I will submit it to Jon's database and let people in this list know. Later... Yavuz Onder Hi Yavuz, I just add EDDW to my name as I am used from another Sim I was working for before I got to FG. In my opinion this is a nice feature as you can see from which part of the world another user is (EDDW = ICAO code Bremen/Germany). Are you on Win32 or Linux? If on Win32 I could offer you to try the latest version of FGTools which has nice features for model placement including the use of the UFO cursor files you can create now since Melchior made this nice UFO update (= makes exact placement of models much more easier!). The reason I have not uploaded it until now is that I am completing the manual which is until now more than 25 pages and that I am just implementing a new feature which is very important for me and might be for other. But the actual version is stable and documented especially for the models page. Let me know if you are interested, also via private mail. Anyway, looking forward to your first models, thank you! Put your model into the basic scenery path - if you have several of them? For me that would be (under Windows = backslash!) MyFlightGear/data/scenery/objects/ 2. Put your model a lot over the surface so you can see it easily when searching - this helped me a lot in the first time! I don't know how the dimensions in blender (and in the exported .ac file) relates to Flightgear units. I don't even know if the Flightgear works metric or not. To be able to verify that my objects' dimensions are close to real life, I thought I would place myself in UFO, first at the base of the object, and then at the top of the object, and read the altitudes from the property tree. My problems with this idea are: I know ctrl-u takes you up vertically, but it seems to take you up 1000 ft at a time. I could not find (by trial) any way to go down. Neither to go up in smaller steps. Is there finer controls for UFO? Is there another way to achieve what I want (measuring the objects in Fligtgear scene)? Thanks in advance. Yavuz Hi Yavuz, nice to hear from another beginner with Blender :-) and I hope you'll share your models with us (- Jon Stockills models and objects database). The UFO has got an improvement by M.Franz to also have low speed for scenery design purposes. But this does not help you if you are not compiling FG yourself (as I suppose). If you are *very* sensible with the controls you might navigate the UFO to the position where you want to have it - going forw. and backw. You do know all the controls? Throttlespeed forward Throttle + Brake (b or Joystick Trigger) speed backward Joystick forwardUFO down if speed 0 backward UFO up Joystick left UFO rolls left Joystick right UFO rolls right Pedals (or O, key on the numeric keyboard) rotate left, right An alternative is the magic carpet FDM You can use it with the commandline parameter --fdm=magic I tried it once with the BO105 It has some advantages, you must decide whether it is better for you than the UFO Magic carpet: Joystick forwardgo down Joystick backward go up Joystick left rotate left Joystick right rotoate right Throttleforward speed Throttle + brakebackward speed If you use the BO105 (I did not try another aircraft with the magic carpet FDM), go to outside view with v and have the HUD switched on h then you can quite easily go up and down a building once you are there and look at the two altitude scales at the right - a normal one and a spread one (better for you). OK, have fun Regards Georg EDDW --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. Re: [Flightgear-users] FGTools 1.3.18 f/b ...was New York Scenery not quite righ
dene maxwell schrieb: Georg...there was one other thing I notice the FGTools window height is greater than 600, I assume this is because you run your desktop at greater than 800x600 res. Would it be possible to add a test that IF window.heightscreen.height THEN Window.VerticalScrollBars.enabled=true ? cheers :=D ene Hi Dene, 1.what I put on my homepage was just the *pure* *.exe file, no external helpfiles, no manual. It was just for the purpose that you could check your code :-) 2. If you are interested in Beta-Testing then I'll put another version on my homepage with some stuff added which is necessary to understand some functions. I am just writing on a short manual, this is a real time-consuming procedure. I could add what I have produced until now, so you may understand some simple things like selecting and placing models into the scenery. 3. The GUI is very bad and not the normal style I am creating programs for other people. But this project started as a personal help for my own use and then I decided to share and contribute to the FG project, even if it is only for a small group of Win32 user. But now I am not sure whether I make further versions public because writing some doc is really a plague for me AND there has been a feedback -quote far under 1% of the downloads. No critics, no positive fb. And - on the other hand - with FGRun and the upcoming FGSD we'll have some tools which cover all the needed functions. So I won't improve the GUI anyway - although it looks very bad and is not very comfortable. 4. 600x800 pix - your are right, I did not think that anybody uses this screen-res anymore. For you, my fried, I'll put your proposal into the code, of course. Might be not this evening, as my todo list is big, but within the next days! My local time is now 21:26, I'll be back online around 00:00. Please tell me whether you want to have *all* the newest stuff (might be around 1.5 MB to 2MB ??? download). Send me a private mail. I'll answer when I have uploaded, if so. Thank you for your feedback Regards Georg --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media.
