Re: Questionnaire on motivation analysis of open source and open content
http://www.osalt.com/ Find open source alternatives to well-known commercial software. Although most open source programs are free software, there are occasional exceptions. I'd expect that all those programs are free, but we can't be sure unless we check the licensing of each one. However, the question that was asked was a different one: Has anyone come up with a comprehensive list of one-to-one functions of non-free services and free? This is about services, not programs. Our distinction between free and nonfree applies to _programs_. If you have a program, you can copy it and change it unless someone has taken steps to prevent it. So the question is, did someone do that? A service is not a program, and the issues of free software don't even arise for a service. For instance, freedom to copy: I can't copy your service by typing cp. Freedom to modify: how could I possibly modify your service? Thus, the distinction of free vs proprietary does not apply to services. Services raise a different set of ethical issues. In one kind of case, when it is a matter of doing your own computing, any service is automatically bad. (We call such services SaaS.) To have control over your own computing, you need to do it in your own computer (with free software of course). To do your computing using someone else's service is to lose control over it. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/who-does-that-server-really-serve.html. Thus, the replacements we recommend for services which are SaaS ought to be programs for people to run on their own servers. Google Docs Survey -- LimeSurvey Google Docs Document -- ietherpad-lite I don't know what LimeSurvey and ietherpad-lite are. Are they services, or programs? -- Dr Richard Stallman President, Free Software Foundation 51 Franklin St Boston MA 02110 USA www.fsf.org www.gnu.org Skype: No way! Google Docs Survey -- LimeSurvey Google Docs Document -- ietherpad-lite I don't know what LimeSurvey and ietherpad-lite are. Are they services, or programs? I guess both. But in the context of the original issue which you pointed out that some folks don't like using Google Apps because it is nonfree. Many people prefer to use an online pad to collaborate documents on. etherpad-lite is a free program which you can download and install yourself and it is a service that several sites have implemented. For example, piratepad. I get the point of what you have described in this thread about the difference between service and program. And appreciate the clarifications you made. But the question here was what service do we point people to when they come to us using something we don't necessarily wish to use. I did look at osalt, and it was a bit of a confusing site and not very straightforward. In this case, we didn't want to respond to a survey on Google Apps. So, we said, go use LimeSurvey. (I've not heard of LimeSurvey myself, but I'm assuming it is in some way compatible to free-and-open purists concerns.) etherpad-lite I have used with great love, although it has stability issues for users. I know this is not exactly a GNOME topic, but creating a wiki page that tells people If you want to talk to us or work with us, use this... would be helpful so we don't make those who came to us legitimately feel alienated just because they didn't know the ramifications of the tool they used. That's all. :-) Bryen M Yunashko ___ foundation-list mailing list foundation-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/foundation-list
Re: Questionnaire on motivation analysis of open source and open content
Google Docs operates using nonfree Javascript code. Is it possible for people to fill out your questionaire without running that nonfree program? I don't know, but I guess not. This illustrates the difference between the free software movement (which GNOME is associated with) and open source. For the free software movement, free software is ethically distributed software and nonfree software is an injustice we aim to escape from. For open source supporters, it's just a matter of software development methodologies. -- Dr Richard Stallman President, Free Software Foundation 51 Franklin St Boston MA 02110 USA www.fsf.org www.gnu.org Skype: No way! You use the word commercial in various questions. Do you want to say proprietary software as an opposite of free and open source software? I chose not to answer the questionnaire after I got to the middle of it and considered that it is mostly misleading and that probably no good information can be derived from it when you're asking questions with wrong premises. I think you need to understand the subject better and ask for feedback of your questions before making a questionnaire.
