Re: [Framers] MIF File Issue SOLVED

2023-06-20 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Rick Quatro came to the rescue yesterday and helped me find where the issue was
located (and turned me on to Wordpad++)-although we couldn't tell exactly what
Frame didn't like.

When we excised the relevant table (TblID), the MIF opened properly.

I've informed the LSP so they can deal with the original file at their end as
it's probable (in my estimation) that the offending item/character comes from
their tools.

Thanks again to Rick! Without his help, I'd still be floundering.

I'll look for a UTF-8 capable editor - but I don't have a older version of
Frame to try.

Rick Quatro has offered (off-list) to have a look so If no one in my "chain of
command" has any objections, I'm definitely going to try that.

Craig,
At first I would try to open the MIF file in a UTF-8 capable text editor. Are
there any problems?
Then you could try to open it in another FM-version (You know, in a lower level
you will get messages about skipped features), but it should be possible.

[Framers] MIF File Issue

2023-06-16 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Win10, Frame 2020 (V 16.0.5.1096)
Two days I received a load of MIF files for 2 manuals from the translators
(LSP). Every file except one opened perfectly.
The LSP can open the file without a problem. As I can't, I have asked them to
re-create the file from their translation tools, and in the meantime, try to
save the MIF as an FM file and send me a copy.
I've looked at the MIF using MS Notepad and compared the start and end of the
file to one that opens just fine in Frame. I can't see any differences, but I'm
not exactly a MIF expert.
The one really weird thing is that when Frame tries to open the file, a large
screen of text is shown on the right-hand side of the screen (it looks like
maybe it the MIF content) before the file opens with absolutely no visible
content. I have a screenshot of that if anyone wants to answer me offline.

Re: [Framers] Adobe removes functionality from a perpetual license? Adobe response???

2023-04-06 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
IMHO, I would think this was theft (stealing functionality long since paid for)
and possibly extortion, maybe even a form of ransomware (pay up for a new
product or you can't use aspects of what you've already purchased). I agree
that abandoning support is one thing. But this is a whole 'nother kettle of
fish.
I am using a stand-alone version of Adobe Acrobat Pro 2017. I don't use the
functionality you describe, but what else is going to be taken away...?
I guess I have issues to report to IT - and no the answer isn't "buy the
subscription".

Warning: LONG POST!!!

I have Framemaker 2019 (the last version for which a perpetual license was
sold) and Adobe Acrobat Pro XI (a perpetual license) and have successfully used
this combination for years to create Reader-Extended PDFs that my users can
comment on for editing purposes. As old as Acrobat Pro is, I have NOT needed to
upgrade to any version as I use only this basic function in it. Yesterday, out
of the blue, after creating a Reader-Extended PDF that was enabled for
commenting and measuring, I received the following Error message: You do not
have permission to write to this file. To say that I was stumped was an
understatement. I am an independent contractor and therefore, the account that
I use for my business systems is my Administrator account - full privileges to
do anything and everything that I need/want to do - and I couldn't fathom why I
was getting this message/ how it was being generated. I thought that perhaps
at first it had to with a hiccup caused by a recent Windows update. (If
you recall, a Windows update a few years back torpedoed the Adobe PDF engine
and users were unable to generate PDFs from Framemaker, Word, etc.)

I reached out to Rick Quatro for assistance as it was related to PDF generation
and after a bit of sleuthing on his part, he came across this post from Adobe
(just put an https:// in front of this):
helpx.adobe.com/ca/acrobat/kb/reader-extended-pdfs-and-adobe-root-ca-expiry.html.

In a nutshell, this post states that Adobe is removing functionality from its
Acrobat products, including those that had a perpetual license and the ONLY
option that a user has who owns an Acrobat version older than 2017 is to
upgrade to the latest version. (Users w/ versions 2017 and older have the
option to download updates to resolve this issue.) I won't get into the
details of the visceral response that this elicited in me, but has anyone EVER
had an issue with any other vendor besides Adobe removing functionality from an
application for which you purchased a perpetual license? I am not referring to
support - I totally understand why a vendor no longer provides updates/supports
for older versions of SW, but removing functionality to force you to upgrade?
This does not remotely strike me as ethical, let alone, can it be legal? The
real icing on the cake is that without a formal warning/announcement sent to
the affected users, how would you even know that this would be an issue? R
ealistically, would a user of a perpetual license go to the vendor's website
to look specifically for an announcement because you just were wondering if you
were going to lose functionality in your application?

Adobe keeps putting nail after nail into the coffins of some of its most loyal
users (I have been a Framemaker user since 1996) and it's for reasons such as
this that I have recommended MadCap Flare or other vendor products for my most
recent client projects.

Does anybody from Adobe care to comment about this? As an IC that is
semi-retired and that is on a tight budget, having to upgrade to a subscription
license just to get the most basic of functionality that I thought that I
should always have because I purchased a PERPETUAL license is unfathomable to
me and not remotely financially feasible and several other users w/ whom I have
spoken.

Thanks!

TVB

You have to use a fundamentally different approach.

Explicitly declare the whole numbering scheme for your nested lists (2, in this
example):
Level 1 = N+, A0
Level 2 = N, A+

Use your procedure-introduction heading to reset those numbering lists. Yes, a
heading can have a numbering scheme, vidilicit:
N=0
A=0

So you never need a 'first number' style. Dumbest idea that the intern at Adobe
ever came up with. (That intern might be a VP of development, now, so... Ooops!)

Bonus: conversation to DITA will be easier without an artificial/superfluous
reset style.

HTH. I'm not at a keyboard, and I've been out of FM for yonks.
But that approach is right.

Win 10 with FrameMaker 20 (not the latest Frame version as my company doesn't
allow updates as they are released).

I'm sure the answer to this is easy, but I can't figure it out.

I have a list of numbered instructions. Within that list is an alpha sub-list
under one of the instructions.

When I finish the last alpha sub-list entry and revert to the numbered
instruction list, the number continues counting from the last alpha bullet, not
the previous numbered instruction.

For example:

1.
2.
3.
 a)
 b)
 c)
 d)
5.

Where "5" should actually be "4".

The first numbered and alpha list steps have the following auto-numbering
setups:
.\t
.\t

Second and subsequent numbered and alpha list steps have the following
auto-numbering setups:
.\t
.\t

What am I doing wrong?

Alison

[Framers] https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home Not Working

2023-02-07 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Does anyone have any idea how to go about reporting problems with
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home?

When I log in, it tells me that Issues Created and Issues Commented are both
zero-which is just not true.

And when I go to https://tracker.adobe.com/#/search the "Loading form" message
never goes away.

I get the same "Loading form" issue whether I'm logged in or not and it's the
same on both my work and home PC.

This worked fine on Friday (I even got an update from the system when a
Comment-from a member of this list-was added to a new issue I'd just created).

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] Re: Variable Preferences - custome colurs available?

2023-02-02 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
I’m working with IT in Austria.

Turns out they’ve put a “stop”” on updates past a certain point (they take
security very seriously—which I like).

They’re forwarding the matter to the IT software team to look at allowing an
update to FM2022. That will require them to run their security process on it,
so even if they agree, it will take a little while.

Sigh…

Have You updated to the lastest version of FM-16 aka 2020?
There is no such thing as coloured variable there.
This feature is present in FM-17 aka 2020. This is not installed by the update

Re: [Framers] Variable Preferences - custom colurs available?

2023-02-01 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Hi Sue:

I've discovered it's *supposed* to be there - but I don't have the Variables
option even though I did a complete update last week.

I'm working with IT to see if there's something special about our
subscription. But it may take a while as I have to work with the office in
Austria while I am in BC, Canada.

Re: [Framers] Variable Preferences - custome colurs available?

2023-01-31 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
This doesn't help me as I don't have a "Variables" option in "Preferences".

But just last week I updated FrameMaker to the latest version so I'm not sure
why the option is missing.

If I find out anything, I'll let people know.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 10 won't run on Windows 11

I recently updated to the latest version of Frame and am running Win10.

No problems at all - but I bet I wouldn't get any support from Adobe if an

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker crashes

2022-10-03 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
I don't get this type of freeze/crash, but I do get regular crashes (latest
version of Frame using the (hated) subscription model).

My system is significantly better than what Adobe requires, but if I'm going to
have a book open, then I restart 3-4 times a day if Frame is in heavy rotation
(I still work with MS Word as well).

I've found that restarting at least once during the day and then when I finish
my day is a great precaution for Creative Cloud programs as well-to the point
where I almost always restart at lunch time and at the end of the day.

My experience is that the more complex the program, the bigger the memory leaks
appear to be (regardless of who wrote the software).

The Windows memory leak problem has been longstanding. We used to have to
restart FrameMaker at least once a day (and reboot once a day, too) while the
SUN workstations would run without rebooting for months. I don't think it
trusting Windows beyond a day is sensible. Shut down at night and start fresh
in the morning; it's Windows!

Subject: [Framers] FrameMaker crashes

I have the very latest version of FrameMaker (Windows) and it still, like
earlier versions, freezes after a few days of use, unpredictably, with a
botched-up display (see example below) and no responsiveness. I have to kill
the process with the Task Manager, get rid of *.lck files, get rid of the *auto
files (or rename them, saving the originals just in case into another
directory), restart the whole thing, check manually that the chapters are in
the right state - all tedious for a 40-chapter book.

It's really bizarre that after all these years, in a product with the Adobe
label, there are still such crashes.

Does anyone know any way to present them from happening? I guess exiting after
a few days of use and restarting is prudent (if unpleasant in 2022), is there a
better way?

Thanks,

Re: [Framers] Insert Manual Line Break in a Variable?

2022-09-26 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Thanks for the idea Sue, but I should have been more clear with my "too wide"
comment.

For this particular example, "too wide" is an esthetic issue, not an actual
space issue (although there will be other titles that will be *physically* too
long).

Have you tried using non-breaking spaces to join all the words after where the

Can you insert a manual line break in a Variable? If so, how?

Example Variable: "Electrolyser (E-Series: E30-E1000)".

I want to control where the Variable breaks to wrap it to the next line (it's
part of a right-aligned title that is too wide for the page).

I looked in the Frame manual, but the term "manual line break" only occurs a
handful of times and none of them are relevant.

Hi Alison,

By "stand-alone" do you mean a perpetual -- that is, non-subscription --
license? Yes, it is still possible, but Adobe does not make it easy to find the
option on its website. (Clearly, they'd rather you buy the subscription
version.) Here are some links:

Confirmation that such a thing exists:

A page with all the purchase options. "Acrobat Pro 2020" and "Acrobat Standard
2020" are the perpetual license versions:

This is off-topic, but has Adobe suddenly moved Acrobat to the SAAS model

I bought a stand-alone version 2 years ago, but the members of my husband's

Refer to Appendix B of the Framemaker manual (with a title like "Typing in
Dialog Boxes") for a fairly complete list of the "escape" codes that allow you
to specify special characters in places like dialog boxes and variable
definitions where only plain text can be used.

Hi Winifred:

I did several restarts before I sent in my question without having any luck.

At first it was in one book, then more than one. And now everything is fine.

I hate what I call “cosmic occurrences” as you can never solve them but they
aren’t necessarily a one-time thing.

[Framers] Track Text Edit no longer in colour

2022-09-22 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Win 10 Pro, FM 2020

I know I must be missing something simple, but suddenly, my "track text edit"
text will only show up in black (the default font colour). And deleting
something, even when enabled, simply deletes the text.

Is there a setting I could have mistakenly reconfigured?

[Framers] Updating Para Tag Language in a Translated FM Book

2022-08-10 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
Win 10 Pro, FM 2020

I've just received my MIF files back from the translators (English to German)
and all the Para Tag formats still have English (Canada) set as the Language.

Is there a simple way to reset them all to German - Germany (2006 Reform)?

Windows 10
FrameMaker subscription (fully updated).

We use a project number format to identify our custom projects (eg, G19-6820,
H21-2500, etc).

I always turn the project numbers into variables but I can't figure out to make
the hyphen into a non-breaking version when I create the variable.

I know it has something to do with a backslash (\), but I'm not sure what else
is involved.

Re: [Framers] Contents of Framers digest... Why so many

2021-10-25 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA

I assume most (all) open quickly/immediately because I don't have any
irritations about it.

I tried to remove all the tags and Acrobat went away and never came back.

And I did a reinstall of my single-license Acrobat Pro 2017 in early August
when we upended IT and all every computer in the company was reimaged.

Just the default install.

Sometimes it's good to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat. I notice it can get
bloated with incremental updates.

Just curious...
How long does it take to open just Acrobat with no PDF vs double-clicking a
file?

The FM PDF help file is almost unusable in the current version because of
long loading and scrolling times.
If you have the full Acrobat version, use this workaround: remove all PDF
tags and scrolling, loading and searching etc. works like a charm.

Re: [Framers] Why so many of us feel the way we do about Adobe

2021-10-18 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
But how many people actually bought maintenance?

And how many writers or employers updated every time a new version was
released?

This was - and is - an expensive piece of software with absolutely terrible
support - especially when you consider that almost every installation and/or
authorisation issue is caused by Adobe?

The current $360 annual subscription price is lower than the old
annual maintenance charge, which was 50% of the cost for a new
license.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020 vs 2019

Absolutely the LSP should return the finished product using the same software
version.

I would make a (nice) complaint so that this doesn't happen again - or to other

Are you saying that the translator used an as-yet unreleased version?
Possibly an NDA violation?

Is the secret download location a pre-release repository?

Shouldn't the translator return a client's project in the same release it
was submitted, or in MIF, to maintain compatibility?

Re: [Framers] Stefan wanted to know why so many of us Adobe users "feel" the way we do about Adobe

2021-10-14 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
IMO, Adobe treats us as open wallets from which to extract more and more money
- but they deal only reluctantly with our support issues (you have to be *very*
persistent) and (almost) never fix the actual problem. (How many of you have
searched the web for an "Adobe solution" and come across a bunch of forums with
reams of the same complaint as yours, and the complaints date back 5, 7, 12 or
more years?)

I've also had the "unhelpful and/or hours-on-hold support" issue with other
products (Creative Suite, anyone?) and don't get me started on the dog poo they
call "Adobe Digital Editions", which they refuse to fix and also refuse to
support. Yes, I know ADE is free, but do it right or don't do it at all.

Well, I had Frame 7 for ages and ages, and used to see all the stories on

frame 2015, so did not encounter these issues.

Now I am in a place which is not using Frame

I've been given a way to control the INI file so I won't bug IT for more (with

I just need to know how to adjust maker.ini from US English to Canadian English.

If the offer of a refreshment treat of the IT tech's choice, doesn't earn
you the favor of gift copies of the old ini files, try creatively searching
Google.

There are some good FM resources in the larger world.

It would help the IT tech immensely if you provide them the full ini file
paths.

That would be great...

But they are so swamped with issues that I won't ask (the changeover has been
massive).

Re: [Framers] Table Style: Including a Minimum Row Height

2021-08-30 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA

I was in touch with Silicon Prairie when this issue first came up in the Spring
and was provided with as much detail as they could give me to pass along to IT.

It's just a matter of waiting my turn in the (extremely long) queue at this
point.

Maybe Silicon Prairie can provide certifications of some kind that would
be useful to your IT folks.

OTOH, consider saving correctly-formatted tables in a reference library
document, or on a reference page, where you can copy them from.

You can also put formatted templates for tables on a reference page so that the
templates will travel with each file. And each time you create a new chapter
file, just import the reference pages from a file that has the table templates.

Oh, bloody hell. I know it's necessary, but what a PITA.

Well, what you could do is just create a separate FM document with tables
set up the way you want and do a C That's pretty much what Autotext
does, but it lets you add them as menu items so you don't have to go
looking for them.

You're absolutely correct! Except that tables and figures aren't numbered!
The paragraphs that are used by tables as their titles, have numbering
properties. Figures have no numbering properties, but the paragraphs in
which figure frames are anchored do have those properties.

So, for all Vulcans, and others who share Spock-ian mindsets, as I do, it
makes perfect logical sense: If you view a FM document's text flow as a
family tree, a genome, a stream of paragraphs whose formats have many
properties that are shared among the relatives and descendents, that
comprise the document's behaviors, it makes sense.

Until I started responding to your raising the issue this way, I never paid
attention to why FM made sense to me over all these years. Thanks for the
inspiration for me to clarify explicitly what I've just been doing
intuitively for so long. Really! Of course, now, if I stay consciously
aware of all this, it could be paralyzing when I try to write, like looking
down while on a tightrope. ;)

Alison,

If there are chapters or appendices with no tables or figures, you
still need to set Paragraph numbering to Continue Numbering from
Previous Paragraph in Book. If you leave the default setting in those
chapters, they will start the numbering over. Those chapters will look
fine, but the first one that does have a table will continue from the
preceding chapter, not the preceding chapter with tables.

Good to know as I am currently moving back into FrameMaker and about to start
using Visio again (Frame's "callout" functionality leaves much to be desired).

Thanks for sharing!

Extraordinary to see this coming around again after all these years. I first
encountered it in EMF files generated by Visio more than a decade ago: looked
fine on screen in Visio, but ghastly in export file. (It wasn't FrameMaker's
fault that time, but the export 'filters' in Visio.)

Quite likely, but I cannot comment as I worked on Mac.

Hi Alison,
Are your line spacings set to "Fixed"? If not, I think that would be the
solution.

Re: [Framers] Superscript and Subscript

2021-08-12 Thread Craig, Alison GLI/CA
The superscript is too high and the subscript is too low-which is what forces
the leading change or put the xscript too close to a table row line.

FYI: The red didn't come through.

Thanks, Alison

Alison,

I can't quite tell if you have too much space or not enough space (see red text
in your message). The only thing I remember is that you can lock the line
spacing so that these elements that stick up or down don't affect the leading
at all, but that usually makes things cramped. That option is usually used
where the designer wants the lines to always line up across a multi-column
layout.

I have a few superscript and a lot of subscript markings in my book.

The markings are especially annoying, particularly in tables, as they don't
leave enough space above the superscript so the table line above it so it looks
crammed into the space. And Frame rearranges the leading for both so there's
too much space between the lines - it almost looks like I have 1-1/2 line
spacing.

I'd like to make the super and subscript markings a little lower and higher,
respectively, so they are noticeable, but don't muck with table spacing or
leading.

Is there any place in Frame to control these options?

Alison
