[Framers] Variable Preferences - custome colurs available?

2023-01-31 Thread Sue Thomson (Specialist RF)
Hi folks

I am using the new feature for highlighting variables but I would like to
define custom colours because the options provided obscure the content of the
variable. Does anyone know of a way to add custom colours (or reduce the
opacity) to the list?

Have you tried using non-breaking spaces to join all the words after where the

WIN 10 Enterprise, Frame 2020

Can you insert a manual line break in a Variable? If so, how?

Example Variable: "Electrolyser (E-Series: E30-E1000)".

I want to control where the Variable breaks to wrap it to the next line (it's
part of a right-aligned title that is too wide for the page).

I looked in the Frame manual, but the term "manual line break" only occurs a
handful of times and none of them are relevant.

Re: [Framers] Running FM from external device?

2022-07-01 Thread Sue Thomson (Specialist RF)
Hi Ken

May we (my hardware/software engineer husband "and I") suggest a zero-cost
potential solution (to the question you didn't ask!):

A friend recently had a hardware issue like this with an older laptop (totally
unconnected with FrameMaker). It turned out that the button-cell in the laptop,
although needing replacing due to age, was not the culprit - it was a problem
with the bios.

You may already know this but for readers who don't, the bios chip is an
electrically-erasable ROM, which is basically a gazillion tiny capacitors. Over
the years the capacitors lose their charge and a "one" becomes a "zero", or
vice versa. So, you could download a new version of the bios from the
manufacturer's website, put that on a USB stick, and upgrade the bios on the
old machine.

Note: You will need to set the bios to accept a boot from the USB key.

In our friend's case, as soon as the bios was updated the laptop booted and
performed beautifully.

If you choose to try this solution, please let us know if it resurrects your
old machine. (If you feel you need support with it, let me know and I'll put
you in touch directly with my husband.)

Subject: [Framers] Running FM from external device?

Gang,

A little help requested here regarding my non-subscription installation of
FrameMaker. Basically, can FM10 be run from an external hard drive? Also, can
it be installed from a thumb-drive.

I legally own FrameMaker 10 and have no desire or need to upgrade (for
financial and other reasons). I have installed it legally both on my desktop
Windows 10 computer and (per the ULA) on my seldom-used Toshiba Windows 10
laptop.

The problem is that the Toshiba is about six or more years old and literally
failing. It booted up just fine a few months ago, but then last weekend it
wouldn't power up at all -- even after leaving it connected to its wall-charger
overnight. I was told that the internal laptop battery was simply too expired
to take or hold an external charge, so I purchased a new laptop battery ($$$)
and left it overnight with wall-charger connected.

The next morning, the laptop powered up but with a black screen. After
researching that problem (using my trusty desktop computer) and running a
procedure, I was able to boot the laptop, but this time got a totally white
screen. The online advice leans towards possible internal repairs/replacement
-- stuff that just too pricey to do on this thing.

So I purchased a "newly remanufactured" HP laptop with an SSD and loads more
speed and capacity (just under $400 at my local MicroCenter).

Ideally, I'd like to "deactivate" the FM10 installation on the Toshiba HD, then
install it on the new HP laptop. (And that would require copying everything
from my Adobe FM10 DVD onto a thumb-drive because newer laptops just don't have
DVD drives.)

But I can't do that because of the "white screen" problem with the Toshiba and
I don't have access to an external monitor.

I can easily pop the Toshiba laptop hard drive out, stick it in a case and run
it from the new HP laptop via a USB cable as an external hard drive, but will
FM10 run using that arrangement?

If not, then I guess I'll have to phone Adobe for their support in this matter.
And can they deactivate only the laptop installation? And can FM10 be
reinstalled from a thumb-drive?

[Framers] Utility to batch rename elements?

2022-05-30 Thread Sue Thomson (Specialist RF)
Hi folks

I need to tidy up and simplify my structured FM templates. The element names
originated from old Word tags and don't conform with the element names which
are familiar across the industry.

I would need to repeat the process for each book as it comes back for updating,
so that I capture all of the live books eventually.

Does anyone know of a tool which would allow me to batch rename elements?

TIA

Re: [Framers] Color08

2022-05-10 Thread Sue Thomson (Specialist RF)
Hi CC

Silicon Prairie Software
(www.siliconprairiesoftware.com) have a
tool for purging unwanted colours from documents. You create a reference
document which lists the colours you want to keep and then run the tool to
remove all colours which are not on that list.

I bought it as part of their clean-up bundle, which included tools for managing
paragraph formats, character formats, table formats, cross-reference, and
variables, amongst others. I use their clean-up bundle all the time and it is a
wonderful time-saver.
