blade system recommendations

2006-10-12 Thread John Daniels
I'd like to purchase a blade enclosure with SAN
storage. What systems like these are recommended with
FreeBSD?

Please comment on:
HP c-class enclosure -- will some/all of the
management features work? if I use hp tools (requires
compat5) and linux compat, would I get all/most
functionality?

Is p-class better if all the bells and whistles of
the c-class are not available?

What about Dell? Not as robust but cheaper? Does
Dell blade system (PE1955) with CX300 work well? If
hp c-class doesn't make sense because functionality
(like manageability features) are not available, then
would Dell's offering be a better choice over the hp
p-class?

Please feel free to recommend other blade-SAN
configurations that work well under FreeBSD.

Thanks!

XFree86 fonts

2002-10-21 Thread John Daniels
Can I install both Type1 and TrueType fonts? Can I install multiple
packages for each (Type1 and TrueType)?

I have XFree86 4.2.1 from new install of FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE. When
describing installing TrueType fonts, the handbook is confusing, it
says:

XFree86 4.X has built in support for rendering TrueType fonts. There are two
different modules that can enable this functionality. The freetype module is
used in this example because it is more consistent with the other font
rendering back-ends. To enable the freetype module just add the following
line to the Module section of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

   Load freetype

*** is that all for XFree86 4.x? The handbook then goes on to add:

For XFree86 3.3.X, a separate TrueType font server is needed. Xfstt is
commonly used for this purpose. To install Xfstt, simply install the port
x11-servers/Xfstt.

*** well, that doesn't apply to me, but the handbood goes on! and
*** therein lies my question: do these folowing paragraphs (which I
*** have included below) apply to 3.3.x or to BOTH 3.3.x *and* 4.x?

Now make a directory for the TrueType fonts (for example,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType) and copy all of the TrueType fonts into
this directory. Keep in mind that TrueType fonts cannot be directly taken
from a Macintosh; they must be in Unix/DOS/Windows format for use by
XFree86. Once the files have been copied into this directory, use ttmkfdir
to create a fonts.dir file, so that the X font renderer knows that these new
files have been installed. ttmkfdir is available from the FreeBSD Ports
Collection as x11-fonts/ttmkfdir.

   # cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
   # ttmkfdir fonts.dir

Now add the TrueType directory to the font path. This is just the same as
described above for Type1 fonts, that is, use

   % xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
   % xset fp rehash

or add a FontPath line to the XF86Config file.

Thanks,

John

Re: having trouble setting up X on Fbsd 4.7 w/ ATI Mach6

2002-10-21 Thread John Daniels
I had the same problem.

'ati' is not listed, so I used the default/vga. When I finished the
install, startx failed.

I did some rearch at www.XFree86.org and found that I needed to enter
'ati' for that parameter (I think on that screen, the driver defaulted
to 'ati' and it was asking for a chipset??) so both driver and chipset
needs to be 'ati' -- if you enter 'mach64', you loose some
functionality. Note: as you mention, nether 'ati' or 'mach64' are
options.

Because I didn't do it during install, I can't tell you 100% that you
should enter 'ati' during the install, but you can get more info at
www.XFree86.org, or edit the XFConfig86 file after the install like I
did.

Using 'ati' might also help with modeline, I'm not sure. Modeline
worked ok for me.

using an extended partition for freebsd

2002-10-16 Thread John Daniels

Hi everyone:

I am installing 4.7-REL on a PC with one PRIMARY and one EXTENDED partition.
  The PRIMARY
partition is FAT and I have W98 there. I want to use the EXTENED partition
(the WHOLE partition -
there is currently nothing there) for FreeBSD but I read that FreeBSD needs
to be installed into
a PRIMARY partition.

SYSINSTALL's FDISK program has an option (Change Type) that lets me change
the EXTENDED
partition to FreeBSD, but I don't know if it is changing the partition to
PRIMARY or just making a
cosmetic Label change. And if it is making the change, will the BIOS
recognize it (will anything
break)

Will SYSINSTALL's FDISK program do what I need it to do? If not, what tool
can I use to change
the EXTENDED partition to a PRIMARY partition?

FYI, SYSINSTALL's FDISK screen is:

Disk Name: ad0
Disk geometry: 4865 cyls/ 255 heads / 63 sectors = 78156225 (38162MB)

   Offset Size EndName PType
   Desc. SubtypeFlags
  0 63 62-
6 unused 0
63 12594897 12594959 ad0s12

extended15
78156225 9135 78165359 -6
 unused0

Thanks in advance,

John

Re: freebsd into an extended partition

2002-10-16 Thread John Daniels

Thanks for the reply.

From: Kent Stewart [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It didn't matter. My mailer mangled it anyway. The sysinstall fdisk will do
what you need to do. You delete the extended partition and then use what is
left as a FreeBSD slice.

OK, but the sysinstall fdisk has a Change Type option that seemed to work.
When I tried it, it changed the EXTENDED partition/slice to FreeBSD.

Do I need to actually Delete the EXTENDED partition and then recreate
it as a FreeBSD slice? (is that safer, or otherwise recommended)
It seems that Change Type does this in one step.

BTW, I have nothing on the EXTENDED partition. It is only there to hold
FreeBSD.

SYSINSTALL/FDISK

2002-10-16 Thread John Daniels

Hi:

Please read the whole post before replying. Yes, I know that
DOS allows 4 PRIMARY Partitions and the history and purpose
of an EXTENDED Partition.

I am installing 4.7-REL on a PC with one PRIMARY and one
EXTENDED partition. The PRIMARY partition is FAT and I have
W98 there. The EXTENDED partition is empty as it was originally
set up to be a place for FreeBSD. Unfortuneately, I now
understand that FreeBSD needs to be in a PRIMARY partition.
(EXTENDED was recommended by the disk's customer
service rep was was familiar with Linux but not BSD)

Also, SYSINSTALL's FDISK program says that one should put
FreeBSD in a partition labeled as unused. However, the
Change Type command lets me change the EXTENDED
partition to FreeBSD. I tried it and it seemed to work (I could
even make it bootable) but I decided not to proceed because
I don't know what is going on behind the scenes: is it really
changing the partition to PRIMARY or just making a label
change (is that the same thing)? I don't want to wind up
with a disk that is unuseable. And if it is making the
change from EXTENDED to PRIMARY, is this something that
the BIOS will be OK with?

Alternatively, should I use the SYSINSTALL/FDISK Delete
option on the Partition and then create a new partition/slice
instead of Change Type?

If SYSINSTALL's FDISK program will not do what I need can you
direct me to a tool can I use to change the EXTENDED partition
to a PRIMARY partition?

Thanks,

John Daniels

Network config for new install

2002-10-14 Thread John Daniels

I will be installing 4.7-RELEASE over ftp. I have a static DSL connection.
I have looked through all the relevent docs but I can not find the answer to
this:

Network config part of Sysinstall asks for a Host name and Domain name.
But, I do not yet have a domain name, so...

  a) should I purchase one before I start the install? (if so
is this necessary or very convenient - recommended?)
  b) can I enter anything for Host name and Domain name and
change it later? (will this make my life very difficult?)
  c) can you point me to any docs?

Thanks in advance,

John

disk upgrade on dual boot system

2002-09-18 Thread John Daniels

I am upgrading from a Maxtor 5400rpm 8-gig to a Western Digital
7200rpm 40-gig.

I have a dual boot system: W98 and FreeBSD. I use the FreeBSD boot manager
(boot easy)

The new drive (WD) comes with a utility for copying all data from the
old disk to the new disk. A WD support person has told me that the
utility will have a problem with the boot manager and FreeBSD
partition.

I do not need to keep the FreeBSD partition (but I would prefer to
keep it for back up). It is 4.0 and I plan to reinstall to 4.6-2.

I do not care to reinstall *both* W98 and FreeBSD

=

What I *think* I should do:

1) Restore current disk to it's pre-boot easy, pre-FreeBSD state by
a) taking out Boot Easy with sysinstall or the FreeBSD utility
   (usr/sbin/boot0cfg)
b) use fdisk to delete the FreeBSD partition
2) install 40-gig disk and use WD disk copy utility
3) remove old disk (now a back-up), check that new disk will boot W98
4) reinstall FreeBSD

This seems a rather strange way to upgrade a dual-boot disk -- what
if actually wanted to keep FreeBSD? Am I missing something? Is
there a better way?
