Add a PCI network card with an old chipset, same for sound. For network, Realtek 8139 is classic, although tastes differ. A few PCI sound cards come with various means of emulating ISA sound blaster, but those often fail (IRQ, DMA, both...) on modern mainboards. Some (e.g. SB Live / SB PCI) even come with virtualizing drivers for DOS. Of course mplayer/mpxplay support some half-new chipsets directly, so if you have no need for game sound, I suggest a cheap PCI or PCIe soundcard with a chipset directly supported by mplayer or mpxplay :-) You can also try Covox (printer port) sound for games and try running DOS stuff in Dosemu or Dosbox in Linux or Windows... Thoughts? Buy a PC with more internal slots? :) (preferably ISA for sound) Otherwise you might investigate alternative ways of getting network connectivity - either with a parallel network adapter, or using SLIRP or PLIP. In all cases it will be much slower than a real network card. I assume your PC has neither an integrated sound card, nor an onboard NIC, otherwise you'd say so. Yeah, I should have mentioned that my PC has an onboard Intel 82567LM-3 for which there seems to be no DOS option for connectivity and the sound is HD and unrecognisableed by either MPXPlay or Mplayer, I have at least one game that will throw sound out the onboard speaker (Empong). As for buying a retro machine, have you checked the prices lately? In the past year alone a PII or PIII with one ISA slot has doubled in price to an average of $300-400. I do have a couple of Compaq Armada laptops that have awsome sound and also connect via PCMCIA netcard. I am trying to get a working Desktop PC that is capable of running FreeDOS and still will run Linux and/or Windows. It's an elusive beast. :^) -- Presto, an open source distributed SQL query engine for big data, initially developed by Facebook, enables you to easily query your data on Hadoop in a more interactive manner. [Freedos-user] Sound or Internet - Which would you rather have?
I have only one PCI slot on my PC. I have gone back and forth between a sound card and an ethernet card and cannot make up my mind which is the better option to have. I am not a gamer so no sound is not a deal breaker. I like having the option to use FDNPKG direct from ibiblio, and connecting to FreeDOS via Dillodos, but I also like sound for my mplayer and mpxplay and few vintage arcade games. Surely you look in the wrong places Of course eBay is full of crooks that try to sell old stuff for fortunes, but it's still possible to build a legacy PC within an affordable price. cheers, Mateusz -- Presto, an open source distributed SQL query engine for big data, initially developed by Facebook, enables you to easily query your data on Hadoop in a more interactive manner. Re: [Freedos-user] Sound or Internet - Which would you rather have?
Well, speaking only for myself of course, I make sure a board has the slots I require before even getting underway. Or, as is often the case since I have my machines built for me, make sure the person doing the work confirms there are enough. Additionally, if you live in an area with an active freecycle community, quality machines can be yours for free. Granted I am in a major city, but I find even p4 units given away. the goal is keeping items out of the landfill, so those using the service would rather pass them on than throw them away.
