[Freedos-user] FreeDOS news round-up

2021-04-08 Thread Jim Hall
I mentioned this on the website the other day, but I know not everyone
follows the website, so I wanted to share it here too:

If you spot FreeDOS in the news, let me know and I'll add it to our News
History page. A few things you might have
missed recently:

In January, I wrote about why I like the FED editor
 on OpenSource.com, my
contribution to an article series about different text editors.

Starting in February, Kevin O'Brien wrote a series of article about
FreeDOS, also for OpenSource.com, including: how to set your Path in FreeDOS
, navigate your FreeDOS
system , understanding
directory and file names ,
FreeDOS commands you need to know
, and FreeDOS batch
files .

More recently, I did an interview with TechRound

about FreeDOS.

Coming up in June, I'm writing a series of articles *all month* about
FreeDOS, leading up to the FreeDOS anniversary on June 29. That's also on
OpenSource.com.

Did I miss any news items about FreeDOS? Let me know so I can update the
News History.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS videos round-up

2021-04-08 Thread Jim Hall
I manage a small channel on YouTube where I post videos about FreeDOS. A
few of you suggested that I share occasional updates about the YouTube
channel on the email list, for those who don't follow the channel.

I post a new video every week, and topics vary from things like showing how
to use FreeDOS commands, how to write sample programs, and playing classic
DOS games. If you haven't subscribed to the YouTube channel, here are a few
highlights of videos you've missed:

   - How to install programs on FreeDOS (without FDIMPLES)

   - How I edit the website
   - How to archive files on DOS

   - Writing a gem-matching game
    (some folks asked for an
ASMR video with my clicky IBM keyboard, and this is it)
   - "Guess the number game" in a DOS spreadsheet

   - Writing a "Guess the number game" in C

   - ..and for April 1st, I made a joke video about writing a "spreadsheet"
in C where I ended up with
   VisiCalc (here's the solution video
   )

I'm always open to suggestions if you would like to see other videos on the
YouTube channel. Let me know if there's something you'd like me to cover
for an upcoming video.

This thread has gone waay off the original topic, and your string
of unrelated arguments has become spam. Our list rules do not allow

Sorry, but the arguments you make do not even begin to make any sense at
all.

You are basically just stringing a lot of baseless conspiracy theories
together, and saying that Mr. Stallman is the only way to defeat this
Vast Conspiracy(tm), because reasons.

And I do not agree with that --- because none of that makes any sense.

Good day.

that's nonsense. there are a lot of free licenses out there that are
not viral, starting with LGPL, but also Apache, MIT, and many others.

dividing the world into Google, Microsoft, and all others (BAD)
and FSF (GOOD) is a somewhat simplistic worldview.

The license MUST be viral. Folks, anyone who complains about it being

[Freedos-user] GNU General Public License...

2021-04-08 Thread Michael Christopher Robinson
The license MUST be viral. Folks, anyone who complains about it being
viral doesn't understand it at all. Google is a monopoly. Google
doesn't like the GPL because Google wants to lock up Android and data
mine everyone on the planet.

How is your free gmail account after all? You have no privacy with
google gmail etcetera because it makes money off of marketing
primarily instead of software. Google I've heard has broken openssl in
the past, because they want to mine data and what better way to mine
data than to put a back door into the popular open source encryption
library that ssh depends on?

The bigest problem I see for ALL open source licenses is that there we
have a monopoly called Microsoft and another one called Google. Google
has long had the reputation of being the company to go to to learn
about Linux. I wouldn't go to google anymore for that. How about Duck
Duck Go?
