[FRIAM] Language death

2012-06-07 Thread Robert Holmes
Interesting piece on a mathematical model of what makes languages die out.
Contains a link to the original paper, freely available (hurrah!) at the
Royal Society.

Dave/Jenny -

Sounds great... might even bring me into town, this one!

I think the work of each of these folks is wonderfully complementary...
though I don't know Waguespack's work (yet).

Sounds great. Hope I can be there. If so, must leave at 10:30, with no offense
to the speakers, I hope.

Over the past few centuries, the book has evolved in tandem with the human. It
has bilateral symmetry, a spine and is like each of us, a repository of
cultural values.

2012-06-07 Thread Nicholas Thompson
ProfDave,

Ask your guest about Hesse's theory of metaphor in scientific explanation.
Also, about Peirce. And then take good notes. I wish I could be there.

By the way, Everybody on this list should know not to bet against Dave West
on any matter relating to Wisconsin Politics.

[sigh]

PS Did you know that on the same night as the failed Walker Recall,
California voters rejected an increase to the cigarette tax, that would have
put the tax in the range of many other large states. The tax would have
been used for cancer research. What makes this result extraordinary is that
only a small minority of Californians smoke and, only two months ago, TWO
THIRDS of Californians favored the tax increase. What made the difference?
19 Million in cigarette company advertising in the intervening two months.
If you don't think that Citizens United isn't going to change American
Politics, better think again. N
