Panther and hidden desktop tile

2004-08-14 Thread kaldav
Hello,
I am running OS 10.3.4 and using Internet explorer. When I double
click a saved web page, and Expose moves the Explorer windows to the
center, I see a file behind them which is labelled Hidden.
I can't find it to delete it, just see it.
In OS9 Sherlock could make desktop files visible. What does one do in Panther?
Thanks.

While that may be because of other causes than OS X and Apple (incomplete

I've already got a 20GB iPod. and I'll use it for transferring files
between my eMac, my BW G3 and my new iBook.
So far the single dead pixel isn't that bad. It's barely noticeable. I
was wondering, how does one connect an external mic to this thing? Via
USB?
I like the way this keyboard feels when I'm typing. It almost feels
better than my Apple Desktop USB keyboard!

Forgot to mention that I also have a Griffin iMic. I have a 1st-gen
TiBook and 1st-gen LCD iMac, neither of which has audio input. The iMic
works quite well, I have recorded some of my LP's to digital for
transfer into iTunes.

Is there a way for me to export my Powerbook display onto TV

Is it the same if I want to export the display onto a Projector?

 What else should I try?

 Thanks!

This is why it is hidden, because people see files and assume they ought to
be able to delete them.

Don't delete files without knowing what they are!!!

There are apps (such as Cocktail IIRC) which let you reveal hidden files,
but realize that if you delete some of these such as /etc/ your machine
will not boot.

So it might be better to leave them hidden.

Wallstreet Upgrade Chip Works in 9 but not X?

Hello Mac troopers,

I have a 400mhz Wallstreet upgrade chip working in what was a Wallstreet

it as well 9.2.2. Both work flawlessly. Except. The upgrade chip reads at
233 in OSX while reading still at 400 in 9.2.2.

Any ideas as to what I am missing?

CMS Peripherals EasyBundle

2004-08-14 Thread Ken
Pulled a PC card out of a bin today, along with a 3gb notebook hard drive.

The PC card is labeled CMS Peripherals EasyBundle and has a short printed
circuit board attached to a length of ribbon cable. The connector on the
end of the ribbon cable plugs neatly into the connector on the hard
drive.

From what I can find out by an Internet search, the thing is/was
intended as a backup system for notebook hard drives.

Plugging it into my Wallstreet causes the drive to spin up, but it is
not seen by the Wallstreet.

Does anyone have any experience with such a device?
Proprietary software needed or is there some way for a Mac to
mount and use a drive connected to the PC card?

Any info appreciated.

Re: PB (10.3.5) to VCR/TV display

2004-08-14 Thread gf sciacca
I have an S-Video to RCA adapter (which came with my Dell laptop). I
have a cable with 3-prongs (white/red/yellow) on each end. I plugged
the yellow into the VCR in RCA jack and plugged the other end into
the SVideo to RCA adapter and plugged that into my Powerbook.

I rebooted the Powerbook with this all plugged in and the VCR turned on.

I went to System Preferences Displays and clicked 'Detect Displays

 Nothing.

It seems to indicate a bad (or not compatible) adapter. Using the
S-video adapter that came with my Lombard, I had no problems, TiBook and
Lombard detect displays in a blitz. Trying a third part adapter yelded no
success.

Also note that adding an additional Scart/white-red-yellow to the chain
(when the VCR does not have RCA in -I mean the yellow one- and you use
the scart-in) disrupts the whole game, at least in my experience.

cheers, gianfranco

SideTrack looks great, but a little too complex for me; I use
uControl http://gnufoo.org/ucontrol/ucontrol.html: it's mostly for
keyboard remapping, but also offers scroll wheel emulation, whereby
I can press the fn key and drag my fingertip on the trackpad to
scroll; very nice (though it's a little jerky in Eudora, dunno why).

The tappable trackpad came to the PowerBook with the 5300/190
generation, but, oddly enough, it came with the 190 but not the 5300;
I got a 190 trackpad and installed it in my 5300, and have relied on
tapping instead of the button ever since (though I've never taken the
time to figure out how to use it for dragging). There have been some
problems with the system interpreting a light, inadvertent brush as a
tap (which can lead to whole paragraphs of text suddenly being
replaced by the next letter you type); there was a freeware extension
named TapGuard to help with that, but now, as mentioned, OS X
includes an Ignore accidental trackpad input option which should be
checked.

Wireless printing

2004-08-14 Thread Darkwolf45
A few days back I posted about my troubles getting my printer to work on my new
wireless network, thanks in part to the advice I received on here.
I managed to make it work, but not in the way I had originally planned to. After
screwing with it and getting no where I decided to try it from another angle. I
plugged it in to my G3 iMac and set it up to be shared from there. Worked like a
charm. I think I may know now what I was doing wrong and may be able to get it to
work on the base station, but for now I'll stick with the working setup I have.

gear, specific videocards and specific software), have more problems than
others. I have already mentioned Pro Audio. Latency aside, I feel PCs
still have the upper hand for some time to come (even though they don't
have the best Pro Audio Sequencer any longer).

Also, there are known areas of application where PCs are better because
they have the apps. Using the incomplete OS X apps in these areas is one
sure way of getting problems even on the best OS in the world. Some
people I know feel the 3D field is one such area and they are also
calling the Apple Graphics bus slow as they want to be able to move 8Gbit
per second, they tell me.

It's hard to stop debate OS X issues. Is there a constructive discussion
group for that that you people can recommend? I don't like the tone of
Mac OS X Talk nor do I like its massive daily volume of messages.

Ah. Where are your ears? sigh

You know there are 24bit / 96 Khz USB audio cards? Hopefully some of the
lower priced ones will get more and more OS X support.

 Hello,
I am running OS 10.3.4 and using Internet explorer.
 When I double
click a saved web page, and Expose moves the
 Explorer windows to the
center, I see a file behind them which is labelled
 Hidden.
I can't find it to delete it, just see it.
In OS9 Sherlock could make desktop files visible.
 What does one do in
 Panther?

This is why it is hidden, because people see files
 and assume they ought to
 be able to delete them.

Don't delete files without knowing what they are!!!

There are apps (such as Cocktail IIRC) which let you
 reveal hidden files,
but realize that if you delete some of these such as
 /etc/ your machine
 will not boot.

So it might be better to leave them hidden.

 TjL

Good advice but he said I see a file... so it is
not hidden. if a file has inadvertently been made a
visible file, why would it be labelled Hidden? I
suspect a popup installed by a Cookie since it is
persistant.
Suggestion: Use Explorer Preferences to remove Cookies
and give us feedback.
