Wait...Apple lied about supporting older computers from the G3-G4 and
probably did it with the G4-G5 transition or lack thereof. FCP
1.5 ran on a G3 then came FCP2 and you needed a G4. The only real
transition was from the 68k Macs to the PPC where most programmers gave
you dual binaries.

2005-02-03 Thread kochkodin
I got a 300 watt inverter from WalMart several years ago...paid $40 for
it and never had a problem...It will put out up to a total of 150 watts
from each ac outlet...Has a built in fan and a low voltage thingy that
shuts it off if the car battery is too low...I have run my iMac SE 400
and an Epson 740 printer off of it going down the highway in a
van...Works great...Just got a 500 watt unit at WalMart after Christmas
for $40 but haven't used it yet...The safest way to use one of these
units is to start the car then plug in the inverter...plug in the ac
plugs...turn on the inverter then turn on the appliances you are using
one at a time...waiting a few seconds in between so the power draw is
stabilized and then you are off and running...Shut down is the same...1
appliance at a time then the inverter itself...Took the 300 cross
country...powered a 12 color tv and also the computer/printer combo
w/out any problem..
HTH..

Re: Dead Pismo

2005-01-16 Thread kochkodin
Get a copy of DiskWarrior as fast as you can and run it...It will
probably take quite a while to do so but hopefully it will work for
you...I had similar problem in July of '03 when my Pismo acted that
way...I was able to get it started once in a while in OS9 but X just
hung there...When I got DW it took a while for it to load from the CD
but it finally did. The fact that it starts from the Restore CD shows
thatthere is power etc...It sounds to me like the HD got really
corrupted...As I said, I thought thatI had hardware problems also and it
turned out ok..The Pismo is still running merrily except for that
[EMAIL PROTECTED]* LG DVD drive that died...Hope this helps!!!

CHARLES RICHARDS wrote:
Good morning all. I used the old paperclip method and opened the CD
drive and inserted the Restore CD and hit the power key and the system
booted up to OS9. The battery shows one light and so I tried to boot up
from the internal HD which has OS 10.3.6 . I get the big apple no
spinning wheel and it just hangs with the big apple showing.
I get the usual start up sound as well.
After waiting 5min or so, I give up and press the power
key+apple+control to restart holding down the C key to start again
from the Restore CD and it will do this. How frustrating. Any
suggestions any one?

The other thing to consider would be the PMU. I'm thinking about all
the components that have to do with power management. The PMU and/or
the Sound Card are the most likely culprits of your problem. I'm not
so sure that the logic board would be at fault. That's not to say
that it couldn't be but...
As for the PMU, it is separate from the mb. Follow this link to see
a picture of it:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Power___Charger_PMU_Battery_Board_Pismo-
p-16137.html
It is on slide 22 at the 'take apart' link I sent you yesterday.

There is this from xlr8yourmac.com about the PMU reset:
...Most often it is due to a dead cell in the backup battery, or just
a corrupted PMU. The problem is that you can't reset the PMU
correctly from a dead backup battery. You can zap the PMU, which will
get the backup battery charging again. Then reset it in a few hours
when the battery has some charge. The steps are below.
If this doesn't correct it, then they most likely have a bad (not
just dead, but bad cell) battery that is corrupting the PMU on its
own. The first suggested fix is an accurate set of PMU resets as
follows.

 RESETTING THE PMU
A corrupted PMU (Power Management Unit) board can cause many
sleep/startup issues.
The PMU is the Power Management Unity of the system. When the
batteries are completely drained, draining too fast, or a battery
with a bad cell exists, or if the AC adapter is unplugged from the
wall, but left connected to the PowerBook, the PMU can become corrupted
If the internal motherboard backup battery has become completely
drained, then a 2nd PMU reset will be needed about 4 hours after the
1st PMU reset and the system has been plugged in for at least an hour
(once the motherboard battery has enough power to reset the PMU
properly). The first reset (due to a dead MB battery) wipes the PMU.
The second reset (using the charged MB battery) rewrites the PMU with
long-term firmware.
Before resetting the PMU, check all connections. If possible. Put
the system to sleep and insert a known good battery, then test.
 Reset the PMU as follows:
Unplug the AC from the PowerBook.
 Eject the battery(s).
Depress the PowerBook reset switch ONE TIME (in the back by the
modem, marked by a white triangle).
 Wait 10 seconds.
 Replug the AC.
 Reinsert the Battery.
 Restart the system.
After the system has had about 4 hours of plugged in time, repeat
the PMU reset as outlined above. This will rewrite the correct PMU
code using the trickle from the motherboard battery's charge to do
the writing.
If the system still does not charge/drain/startup correctly. You can
try a hard motherboard reset. Follow the same instructions above, but
after #2, lift the keyboard and unplug the motherboard battery (lower
right above CD bay, three wire connector), wait 10 minutes then
proceed. After running for an hour on AC, do a normal PMU reset.
 Best regards,
 Gary Dailey

St.Steve

2005-01-10 Thread kochkodin
Q U O T E D
Then did St. Steve raise on high the Holy G5 of Cupertino, saying,
'Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine Dell enemies to
tiny bits, in thy mercy.' And the people did rejoice and did feast upon
the renderings of lambs and toads and tree sloths and fruit bats and
orangutans and lickable icons. ... Now did the Lord say, 'Thou in 12
months, thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the GHz
and the number of the GHz shall be three. Four shalt thou not count,
neither shalt thou count two-point-five, excepting that thou then
proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the
number of the GHz, be reached, then thine will be great and powerful in
my sight, however if thou shall have more than one button on thou mouse,
who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff thine's life.'

-- Justin Evers, in his Reading from the Book of Apple, Chapter 4,
Verses 16 to 20, attempts to explain why Apple's G5 chips haven't yet
hit 3 GHz.

Mac legions await release of Apple's new iDunno: With the Consumer
Electronics Show in the rear-view mirror, the tech world's attention now
turns to the Macworld trade show in San Francisco, where Apple will
unveil its first new products of the year. If the rumors prove true,
we'll see a $149 iPod, a suite of productivity software called iWork
'05, and iLife '05. But will Apple uncrate the much discussed $500 Mac?
Doesn't seem likely. Such a machine would be remarkably out of character
for a company so focused on high-margin markets. More likely, we'll see
CEO Steve Jobs trot out some sort of media server. At least that's what
analyst Rob Enderle is looking for. Apple has a premium brand; Steve
Jobs has likened it to Porsche, Enderle writes. Just as Porsche
experimented and learned that the 914, a very low cost branded product,
was not a good idea (a mistake also made by Lincoln with the Versailles
and Cadillac with the Cimarron), Apple should not have a $500 general
purpose box under the same brand as their premium lines. The perception
of quality and exclusivity would be damaged and the net impact on
revenues and margins would, if past patterns hold, accelerate their
already negative path. However a low cost media server that would host
iPods, have a simplified user interface, and expand Apple into the new
digital home could be vastly more powerful. Consensus that these media
servers should, for the broad market, have a starting price of $500 has
been growing for some time and Apple is expert at the kind of
appliance-like interface such a product would require. This product
would be very similar in both targeted audience and experience to their
vastly successful iPod and while it wouldn't bring people to the full
Apple experience, it would bring them closer to Apple and help mitigate
the growing dependency Apple has on Windows through the iPod.

iPods, have a simplified user interface, and expand Apple into the new
digital home could be vastly more powerful.

Re: Can Macs read DVD +R disks ?

2005-01-09 Thread kochkodin
Neither my Pismo 400 (10.3.7 nor my iMac SE 400 graphite (10.3.7) will
read DVD +R disks...I have burned many on my son's Gateway and Dell
machines but they will not read in either Mac system. If I want to use
them with the Macs, I have to put them in my external LaCie DVD burner

The general rule of thumb is that recent computers should be able to
read pretty much any format, but if one doesn't work try different a
brand of +R discs is the first brand doesn't work.

I thought many older drives, say 2 years, needed a firmware update for
this to work? Why do speak about recent computers on lowendmac list?
In this context for me, recent is 2-3 years old.
How can I make my original DVD-drive of the Powerbook G4 / 400 read DVD+?

Re: PC and Mac on the same wireless network is simplicity

2004-12-23 Thread kochkodin
I would reccommend getting a Belkin card for the PC...I am running
Airport base (graphite) on a Verizon dsl modem. The systems are an iMac
se 400, a Pismo, a Dell desktop and a Gateway desktop. Just added the
Gateway a few weeks ago...had a new Netgear card in the Gway that just
wouldn't work...exchanged it for a Belkin card and it took right off and
the whole thing works great...No dropped signals etc.Running XP on the
PC's and 10.3.7 on the Macs. Now I need to figure out if I can hook up
an HP all-in-one printer/scanner/fax to work wirelessly.

I currently have a limited wireless network- my Slot loading iMac is

my iBook connects via airport extreme. In the coming days I'd like to
add my desktop PC to the list by giving it a wireless card.
What I'm wondering is, will the firewall on the base station still work
with the PC added? Will there be any incompatabilities adding this PC
to the system? In the end, there might be a second PC added to the

network, but I'm not sure yet. Any feedback or prior experience would
be of great help.
Thanks,

Re: Applecare for Powerbooks

BUY IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!
I have a Pismo and had to have the Main power unit, cd/dvd drive and a
bunch of other stuff replaced near the end of the 2nd year...I have all
the paperwork somewhere..but I will say that it was the best $$$ spent
outside of the Pismo itself...I also had AC on my iMac SE 400 and the
only thing that that ever needed was a new PRam battery...so YMMV as
they say...I don't know if I would spring for AC on a new desktop but
would definitely do it for a laptop ...simply because of the form
factor...The laptop usually gets moved around and can be dropped as well
as possibly being more sensitive to bumps etc. because of the
miniaturization of parts compared to the desktops.

Re: Airport Extreme Question

2004-12-14 Thread kochkodin
The funny thing is that before we got the Belkin card for the Gateway,
my son had a Nextel(??? Yellow box) card that wouldn't work at
all...Returned it to Staples and got the Belkin and that took right off
at installation and has worked perfectly since Black Friday...
Mike

I mix and match freely as well without a problem. I
have an old Lucent 802.11b (Airport) card in my
Lombard, a 3Com 802.11b card in my old Toshiba laptop,
an original Airport card in my G4 desktop (Sawtooth)
and an Airport Extreme card in my 12 G4, all
connected to an Airport Extreme base station at home.
My 12 G4 with AE also works perfectly on my friend's
original graphite Airport network.

Anyway..now I need to see if the new HP Printer/copier/scanner combo

ONLY 2.4 GHz wireless phones cause problems with WiFi (as do microwave
ovens). this is because they all emit in the same frequency.

900 MHz or 5.8GHz phones do not.

Agreed... I hadn't read that part of the original message closely enough.

James,
I was with earthlink dial-up for 18 months until Verizon DSL became
available to me 10/03...Switched and haven't regretted it...Running an
imac se 400 pismo 400...both 10.3.2 w/ 1 gig ram and airport along
with a gateway 333 desktop W98SE w/ a lucent wireless card in it...They
all run at the same time and the dsl works flawlesslyThe only
problem has been that occasionally when friends in Australia, England
and Germany send stuff it never shows up..I talked to Verizon about this
and they denied having blockers running...but it seems that right after
I complained about the problem, it disappeared. Also, I get the
Register newsletter from London daily and that was blocked for a while
until I called and I haven't missed any issue since early December.

Postscript or not, but if it isn't you're out of luck.

Re: Ram upgrade enquiry on the Pismo

2004-01-23 Thread Kochkodin
At the least put in 1 512mb...If you can afford it go straight to
1gb...I did that last year when ram was real cheap and never regretted
it..Also upgraded my imac se 400 and am running 10.3.2 on both...No
problems ram-wise...Got the ram from OWC..There was a problem with one
of the pismo chips when I got it but OWC replaced it immediately..

According to the manual the max limit is 512mb but I've heard that some of
you out there have increased this to 1Gb. If so, which chips did you use
and did you have any problems arising as a result of this, and what were
they?
If I upgraded to 512mb should I buy 2x256mb chips or 1x512mb? Does it make
any difference performance wise?
Finally if anyone has some spare pc100 chips they no longer require please
drop me a line!

If you think you might upgrade to 1 GB at some point, then it make more
sense to buy the 512MB chip. I know that there are people on this list that
have their Pismo maxed out at 1GB. Mine is at 512MB with 2x256MB. I'm pretty
happy with the performance I get...

G5 Laptops on the way???

2004-01-23 Thread Kochkodin
VERRRY INTERESTING FYI...
The Mac Channel
IBM claims massive power cut for 90nm G5
Good news for AMD - but not Intel
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/35057.html
The 970FX, meanwhile, consumes a mere 12.3W at 1.4GHz, paving the way
for PowerBook G5s. That figure is comparable to the 7.5W a 1GHz
consumption of the G4-class Motorola MPC7447 that drives the current
PowerBook G4s.

2004-01-21 Thread Kochkodin
It may well have been that they wouldn't deal since the ibooks were the
brand new rage at the time and they wanted to keep the upper price
level...(supply vs demand) I had bought as a parent first then 18
months later I did it as a board member...Maybe it depends on the sales
agent that you get???
Anyway...The point is to call and ask and stress that you are in the ed
field...There MAY be a possible restriction on the sale of the brand new
top of line...but if you don't call and ask you will never know..

buy w/out ever thinking of asking..The idea is to get as much kit into

correct) the margin for Apple is around 25% the idea of taking $100-$200
off in order to get someone to buy a system, printer etc is very
effective.. There MAY be a restriction dealing w/laptops since the
demand is so high.. (again...Supply vs Demand) Just wanted to offer a

Norton since...Don't know about any later release of it...We were
fortunate to have gotten the 30 gig iPod right before the mess occured
and were able to back up the entire 9.2.2 stuff to it via FW target

What email software are you using? Did you change recently? Have you
re-created your Mac OS X user account?

What you see, I believe, is that you are now sending HTML muliparts

Re: Static discharge and the PowerBook

Also...Have you looked into getting a room humidifier??? I had the same
type of problem until I got a humidifier last year...The humidity in the
house was about 10-15%...Way too low...By running the humidifier I got
it up to the mid 30% range which seemed to eliminate the problem...

Well, despite my habit of touching an anti-static mat before touching
my new 15 PowerBook, my arm sometimes grazes the edge of the PB

noticed anything that I can trace back to that.

Best to avoid any static discharge, though, since it can be quite

Pismo 400,10.3.2 PLW NTR

2003-12-31 Thread Kochkodin
Greetings and Happy New Year Lista's,
A quick question for the cognoscenti in the groupI have a Pismo
400 and an Imac SE 400 that I have been using with 10.3.2 and a PLW LS
via a Keyspan serial/usb converter. The systems have worked perfectly
until the other week when the LS showed a scanner motor malfunction and
diedI do have a PLW NTR that works perfectly with my Performa 5200
(8.6) and LC II (7.0?) and want to know if I can use it with the
Pismo/Imac via the Keyspan converter.. I also have a Dayna Ethernet to
Local Talk bridge unit that I got off the LEM list but there wasn't a
manual with it and I can't figure out how it worksEvidentally Intel
bought out Dayna and has ceased supporting any Dayna products. The NTR
was used by my wife at her school and is in great condition and I have a
couple of toner carts that I can use...The printer is rarely used
because I dropped Earthlink dialup and switched to Verizon DSL in October.
So how about it??? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions about the
possibility of getting this combo to work? If this is deemed OT, I
apologize in advance..Any replies can be sent off list if desired...
Again..Best wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous new year to all
the list members
   Regards,
   Mike K

Pismo printing problems..Slightly OT

2003-11-21 Thread Kochkodin
Greetings,
I have been using an Apple LaserWriter300 via a Keyspan Serial/USB
converter with my Pismo (10.3.1)It had been working well until early
this week when I got the message Scanner Motor Malfunction while
trying to print. It stopped completely and I then got the message that
the job was unable to be completed. Does anyone have any idea what may
be involved here? The printer has worked flawlessly the past 18 mos ..I
only paid $25 for it at the Penn State Salvage shop and don't want to
get a lot of $$$ into any repairs.
TIA,
Mike K

Re: Kernel Panic

2003-11-12 Thread Kochkodin
Damn it!!! I KNEW I should have kept my mouth shut!!! After asking
about a panic, I experienced one for the first time ever yesterday after
my son installed NetBarrier on the imac se 400 (10.3-1gig ram- 60 gig
Maxtor hd). Got the screen with the restart message and was only able
to get it restarted in firewire target mode from the trusty pismo
400.(10.3-1gig ram-12 gig (?) hd) It would start up and get part way
through then lock up. He was able to remove NB successfully that way
andall seems to be ok now. The question now is what should I do to
check for any potential problems on the imac? I ran DiskWarrior 3.0
last night and it found some problems that it fixed. Is there anything
else that I need to do in this case? Asking this for precautionary
info in case it happens again on either machine.
Thanks to all who responded to my initial info request..

Mike K

Re: A new start and Pismo Upgrades

Just a quick question...Am I correct in presuming that the members
that have updated to either the G4/550(?) and/or the G3/900 on their
Pismo's are working with machines that are no longer covered by
AppleCare? I just had my Pismo returned from A/C and the following
items were replaced...Board,I/O Logic (P8) Board MPU 400MHZ (P8)
Board Power Supply (P8) and a new Lithium Ion Battery.
The machine will be covered under the A/C until the end of summer
2004. I would like to upgrade it and am probably leaning towards the
900 path. However, does upgrading void the A/C ? How about it Kyle?

BLPE 1.8 on a Pismo 400

2003-11-03 Thread Kochkodin
Just a quick note...My son downloaded this thing yesterday and we got
this message this am... Any comments as to how it works on a Pismo 400
in Classic? We also got Panther on the Pismo and it rocks!!
Regards,
Mike K

The grammar could be better...what is an air?

Thank you for downloading Blue Label PowerEmulator 1.8 demo.

Your trial serial number is:xx
You can download the demo version from http://www.lismoresystems.com/dnlv/blpe18demo.hqx

The demo version will work for 30 days.

If you buy Blue Label PowerEmulator we will consider it as a preorder
for a PC emulator for Mac OS X we are working on. The new emulator
will not be Blue Label but a completely new application. So,
preordering an emulator for Mac OS X you invest your money not to an
air but to a fully functional application.
Best regards,
Blue Label team

NEXT day (10/23) brought a box via Airborne and I sent it to Houston TX
on Monday, 10/27 (4pm) because I was in Boston thru10/26 and got it back
TODAY (10/29) at 2:45PM. They replaced the Trackpad, Battery, I/O
Logic Board, MPU 400MHZ Board, Power Supply and Lithium Battery. Also
earlier this year I had the Mat. DVD drive replaced because it
died...Apple replaced it with an LG drive that has worked perfectly
since then..ALL at no cost..Thank God for AppleCare

Uhm yes I have actually. I had to send in my Pismo twice. Took 3 days to
get it back all fixed, no questions asked. Friend of mine has a 30GB
iPod he started having issues with, syncing didn't work and some other
stuff. Called, they sent him a box and he sent it off. Another friend of
mine just had his battery replaced in his iBook, had to send it in
[pain] but he sent it in on a Friday and he had it on Monday morning at
10am.

Apple has been rated really high by Consumer's Reports and by PC Mag
for service and support for the past couple of years. I think there is
a reason why.
ABSOLUTELY!!!

OT..Sorry..Help w/ 10.2.6 Mail

2003-08-01 Thread Kochkodin
What a P.O.S. this is!!! Can anyone tell me how to mark messages
that I keep as VIP..Lesser VIP,etc?? Also..any suggestions as to an
Excellent tutorial book for this P.O.S. OS? I was forced into it
because of a Maxtor 60 Gig HD wipeout on my iMac SE 400 and my son
reformatting my Pismo 400 to 10.2.6 completely. He is gone and I am
stuck with this P.O.S. I and my wife had been perf3ctly happy and
comfortable with 9.2.2 and then disaster struck.. This Safari thing
seems as useless as ti*s on a boar hog...
The problems I am having w/ 10.2.6 are ALMOST enough to make me want to
go back to my C=64 and C=128's...Not to mention the decrepit Thinkpad
560 and my son's P.O.S. Gateway!!! Also, I guess that I am
completely scared of screwing something up royally with this
OS..ie..fsck etc...What does that stuff mean?? I do have Disk Warrior
3.0..That enabled me to at least rescue the iMac partially...At least
it boots up in 10.2.6 but asks me for a password before it will
load..(My wife wants me to just throw everything out...) If I run that
a least once a week will that keep me safe??? I really need some help
here...I have been using Macs since I bought my Performa 5200 in 6/96
and moved from Commodore.. I REALLY would hate to go to
Windows...HELLLPP MEEE!!!

Re: G5

2003-06-24 Thread Kochkodin

I think the idea is to have a lot of fans spinning more slowly (and
quietly) rather than a few spinning quickly (and loudly). Which doesn't
 necessarily imply a hot processor.

 TimH

For a quiter fan you would want to have a slower revolving prop and smaller
diameter. The faster a prop spins and
the larger the prop the louder it is. This is why propeller designers for
airplanes try to make their props shorter and reduce
their RPMs.

Yes get a Dazzle from Macmall to convert it to digital and transfer via. FW once on
the computer you can edit
in iMovie or
other video editing software. QT Pro can then allow you to compress it into the

your machine converting to any high quailty codec will take your computer forever. It
took my iMac SE with 1
gig of ram nearly three days to convert two hours of video to crummy VCD codec but I
was using the poorly

M/S Drops IE for Mac????

2003-06-15 Thread Kochkodin
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/31205.html

Microsoft gives IE for Mac the
boot
By Ashlee Vance in San Francisco

Posted: 15/06/2003 at 02:50 GMT

Microsoft will not create a new
version of Internet Explorer for Macs in a
move that leaves Apple users in
an uncomfortable spot.

Jimmy Grewal, the Microsoft Mac
IE lead, is fleeing Redmond and heading to
Dubai due to the browser's
termination. Microsoft is saying it will provide
some updates to IE 5 for Macs
but does not plan to release an IE 6. It
reckons users are in good hands
with Apple's own Safari browser, and so the
trouble begins.

I received the shipping box for the Pismo from Apple this past Tuesday
pm...it was picked up on Wed at 3:30 pm...in the middle of a snow/ice
storm...left Pittsburgh PA for Houston Tx that nite and was signed for at
the repair station at 9:30 Thurs am... The Motherboard/power unit was
replaced and I got it back at about 2:30 pm yesterday (Fri)...There was no
need to transfer data so the $50 hold on my credit card was released...It
seems to be working fine now...Had hoped they might have to put a 500mhz
board in to replace the 400...no such luck!!! I did fill in and return the
shipping check list Justin.
Total elapsed time from pick up to return to my sweaty fingers...about 47
hrs...Not too shabby!!!

Jeremy etal...
Thanks for the further info/help about my Pismo problem...it is really
appreciated muchly..I am awaiting the delivery of the shipping container
from Apple via Airborne today (HOPE!!)...I have tried to reboot a few times
-no joy as usual, however I do note that if I don't shut it down by holding
the power button down, it stays on and warms up a tad when I check it a few
hours later...evidentally the power stays on...I just hope that it will be
returned quickly...I had to pull the old Performa 5200 out of storage and
press it into service...hasn't been used for about 2 years and it's working
well so far!!

condition...PEBKAC...never heard that one!!
BTW...do I need to send the ac power supply in with the pb?

well through Apple at least. no charge for repairs under AppleCare
 Protection Plan, of course.

  2. This was implemented relatively recently?

 couple of years ago.

The reason I ask is that I don't understand the reasoning behind it.
  Why
would Apple transfer data off of a drive? Why would they offer to
  take that
responsibility with thousands of failing machines a year? If the
  processor
is bad they would have no reason to transfer data. If the drive was
  truly
bad the transfer (most likely) wouldn't be very successful. What would
  be
one situation where that would be a necessary and sucessful operation?

it's an non-guaranteed option, value added service. the Apple's retail
stores will offer the same service if you carry-in to them, as well.

even if someone accepts the $50 data transfer fee, Apple doesn't charge
if data transfer was not necessary (that is, the hard drive doesn't
need replacement or reformatting, then there's no transfer and no
charge). Apple also doesn't charge you the $50 if the transfer is
 unsuccessful.

most often, data transfer is essential when there is still
troubleshooting to be done before the issue is isolated to a specific
part. for instance, i often will perform a clean install of the Mac OS
before replacing any parts. On some machines, I will even wipe the
drive and restore from the Software Restore CDs My goal here is to
make sure that (a) if I replace the part, it fixes the problem and (b)
I replace the right part. Also, if it's a software issue, no part is
ever going to fix the problem. A large percentage of people tend to
insist that every problem they have is hardware... I like to make sure
 they're right.

I'm an Apple Service Tech. They will not take care of your data. Period.
I used to work at Apple, *and* at an Authorized service shop. Unless this
is a new development...like it was changed *this week* or something.

Jeremy, have you ever heard of this policy?

Another thing. You state that it is covered under Applecare? Do you just
mean that it is still in it's one year hardware warranty period, or that you
purchased an APP for it? If you have not spent the extra $350 to purchase
Applecare I HIGHLY recommend that you do so...especially since you are
having problems now. It will protect you in the future. But judging that
this is a Pismo you must've purchased an APP since it is already probably
about 2 years old??? I missed that part.

Yes...I did buy the A/C last summer...I am covered thru 5/04...Gotta run...Middle
son graduates from colllege this pm...
Later

HHHMMM,
That's funny...the tech said the $50 was definitely in case they had to transfer

try that tomorrow (sun)

Roguewriter...tried the OS9 disks...won't boot from anything...Thanks for the
suggestion, though..The fan never comes on..at least I have never heard it..never
seems to get real hot...Gauge Pro has shown a max temp of about 115* on
it..always use a cool pad with it..

Hal...nothing new done except to change the access #'s and email info in the

recently...
Will let you know what develops with it...

Not to make you more upset, but that is *not* why Apple asked for a CC#.
They will take absolutely NO responsibility for your data, and will not
transfer it anywhere. The $50 is in case they find that it is not an error
on their part. Then they charge you for the service call.

Re: OT, courthouses, Re: dial-up connection with Powerbook G4

2002-12-03 Thread Kochkodin
The reason for not allowing stuff in the court room if you are seated as a juror
is so that you have to rely ONLY on admitted testimony or evidence...you may hear
something that is ordered stricken ie.not allowed to be considered in
deliberations, and you may have it entered in the computer etc...The attorneys
want your full attention during the preliminary screening so they can try to
decide whether or not to strike you as a prospective juror...that way they won't
waste a challenge during voir dire examination if you are picked.
regards,
mike k
btw...I have been called 4 times here in central PA and picked for 2 trials...knew
people involved in the other 2... Also, many people won't register to vote
because they think that jurors are picked from voter registration lists...Here in
PA the courts use the state DMV driver license lists to gather the pool of
prospective jurors.

Anne Judge wrote:

Is the purpose of the jury to do their own work, or to serve the country . . .

I was thinking of the jury selection I face this month, not the trial.

I've only gotten as far as jury selection in my experience so far,
and it mostly involves sitting in a room doing nothing.

All morning the lawyers confer, then after lunch prospective jurors
(dozens of them) are called into a room one by one (stretching
through the whole afternoon) for the voir dire, where they decide if
 they want you.

Re: printer advice Epson 740 ink

2002-08-11 Thread Kochkodin

Hi,
Before you buy a new printer, replace the color cart and run the cleaning
routine several times...Last fall the same thing happened to me...Lost the
colors but the indicator showed over 1/2 full on the cartIt was a 3rd party
cart and the ink had dried up...Installed an epson cart, ran the cleaner
several times because the head was crummy and now it works fineAlso change
the ink cart asap after the low ink indicator shows up...If you don't, and
continue to print you may get 10 or so pages (depending on amount of text etc)
but the heads will dry up quickly and take a lot more to clean and recharge...

Mike K

to just break down and get a new printer. If I buy one it might as well be a
printer that comes with a 10 driver as well as a 9 driver. Anyone have any
recommendations for a fairly inexpensive (under $200) printer that can print
photos pretty well plus handle a pretty good volume of just ordinary print
 jobs?

Pismo power problem

2002-08-11 Thread Kochkodin

Hope someone can help with this
Last nite (sat 8/10) My wife was using the Pismo 400 after I plugged the ac
into the wall...after about 2 1/2-3 hrs, she called me to say the screen was
darkening up...The warning about being on reserve battery appeared and we
quickly saved her documents. The pismo then shut off and is now totally
dead...no power at allThe one thing I checked immediately was that the ac
was in a working socket since the yo-yo was cold...as if it had not been on at
all. Evidently it failed when I plugged it into the wall and now I have no way
to charge the dead battery. Has anyone had this happen and also, do you think
this is covered under Applecare?

Mike K

OT: USB to SCSI

Greetings Listas,
Another question for the cognoscenti of the list...Is there such a thing as a
SCSI to USB converter cable? The reason that I ask is that I have a Umax 11 x 17
scanner that I would dearly love to use with my Pismo and imac se. I currently use
a Umax 2200 scanner that works well but I do have occasional need of the legal size
capabilities of the other scanner. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
