Re: Subject: Re: RAM needed for OS X on Lombard
gf sciacca said at ÒSubject: Re: RAM needed for OS X on LombardÓ. [19/Jan/2004 01:46] It runs fine (and by far more stable) under OS X, but not half as fast as under OS 9.2.2, specially when using many apps at a time as I do. Special concerns (in my case) are very slow Finder actions, terribly long apps launching time, slow window scrolling and Mail annoyingly long deadtimes (even when it is the only application running). Plus, I lost use of the internal modem under OS X. Word processing is fine, forget image and sound editing/processing, way faster under OS 9. Perhaps 512 MB of RAM would improve on all of the above. On the bright side (and most importantly), software installations and configurations, peripheral support, external hardware compatibilyty and so on are vastly improved. Having heard repeatedly that Panther is faster, you'll be better off than me. I'll give it a shot myself. Perhaps I'll re-gain the modem as well. 10.28 on a 233 wallstreet is good with 512 MB RAM Email still fairly slow. Mailsmith is a lot faster, and so is Musashi, than Mail, Thunderbird or Mulberry. I have control of the internal modem. The System Prefs/Network must be configureed right. Select 'show printer/ modem and delete enteries. Then select 'show internal modem and make sure your entry is there. CLick apply. Cheers, John PLum -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OK, thanks I wish I knew that before! Therefore, as I have now seen, when I switch location the port is changed to its default of printer/modem. So , I have to then click the menu to change the port. Re: pcmcia firewire recommendations? (was newertech firewire 2 go...)
There is a new Firewire 800 card out by Lacie. However it uses a separate power supply because it is 800, and cannot be supplied with enough power from the host computer, as I understand. Check it out. However, it is not the 800 speed is compromised by the seek time of your peripheral device. So for example a new Western Digital 1000 rpm is best, but have limited size, much less than 160 GB (I think about 60 MB offhand). Re: newertech firewire 2 go cardbus driver OSX?
I have this card on a g3 wall street and run it successfully on OS( and 10.1 and 10.2 now. You should get an image of a card in the menu bar under OS10.2, but not 10.1 In OS9 an image of the card appears on the desktop. In OS 9 there are two extensions which need to be switched on for firewire. One of them incorporates drivers for the card. IN OS X no additional drivers are needed. I use mine exclusively for a formac cd burner, at the moment. About to add an external hard drive when it arrives. Absolutley no problem with Jaguar II assure you. Perhaps it is your peripheral device that is not being recognised. I remember that with toast, the formac cd rw was not recognised. But with Apple's own cd burner it is. The settings are correct however. And I may even be connected, manually. I restarted in OS 9 with same settings and applications, no problem. Does anyone know where I can obtain version 3.0 from, or does anyone have a copy for sale out there? do you mean running in simulation mode? i.e. virtual pc I've seen that a University in the US has/had MapInfo running on their Macs but don't know which version they use or if it's still available - MapInfo can't/won't reply to my emails. Above question applies. What about other GIS/mapping software? A really decent bit of kit is MFWorks, from a Canadian company. The other option is the opensource Grass project which can be installed on CD. DO google searches for either. regards, John -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OSX on Wallstreet.
MY G3 mounts an OSX install disc. You may try pressing c (or is it d?) at start up to force it to select the cd. CD-RWs are not recognized by the internal g3 cd tray. A peripheral device may recognize them. Don't worry their not particularly useful, in my opinion. 23/12/03 9:46 am -0800 Krevnik [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Something else this machine is doing is not recognising CD's, in particular, CD-RW's. It also will not always mount the OS install disc. It has done this with both the OS and X discs. Regards, John Plum -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
