g_b File - Personal Advertisements

2008-10-01 Thread gay_bombay

Hi All

2 personal advertisements seeking mates a month are allowed on the list. It’s
unfair to others if you post your advertisement every few days. In the past,
many have complained that they see too many personal advertisements on the
list. So a restriction of 2 personal advertisements per month has been imposed.
You may, if you wish, place your advertisement in the classified section at
www.gaybombay.info as well.

In case you want to reply to a member’s personal advertisement, kindly click on
the person’s email address. This will ensure that your reply goes to the
concerned person and not to entire list which is what happens when you hit the
reply button. So please reply directly to the advertiser and not to the whole
group in case your reply is personal.

2008-10-01 Thread gay_bombay

Hi.

I am sure you are enjoying reading the thought provoking, at times
funny, at times informative mails and also seeing the JPGs/pictures
that members post on this list

However, at times you may get a lot of mail and it may flood your
email box.

If you feel flustered and feel that there are too many emails, I'd
like to remind you that you don't have to leave just to stop us from
clogging your inbox.

You have the option of

1) getting your mails in digest form (however you will not be able
to see the pictures in this format)
Daily digest ... once or twice a day, you will receive an
email -- text only -- listing all new postings ... just click on the
messages link at the top of the digest to go to the web archive to
see any
attachments.)

2) or you can view mails directly on the web... and choose the
option ...
you can see what's new on the website and still keep a clear
mailbox. You will never receive mail from us if you do that. YOU
choose
when to visit us ... and you can check out what you like and can
skip over
what doesn't interest you.

3)no email option

I hope this helps. The commands for choosing the various modes are
listed below.

g_b File - E mail problems?

2008-10-01 Thread gay_bombay

Hi

Have you stopped getting emails from this group suddenly? It is highly unlikely
that your name has been deleted from the list. We do not delete anybody’s
membership until and unless the person repeatedly spams or sends
pornographic/crude emails

you might not be getting your mails is because your email is on the bouncing
list. Some members have trouble with bouncing e-mails: Messages that are sent
out by the group cannot be delivered to their mailboxes and are sent back to
Yahoo. This can happen for various reasons, for example, when their mailboxes
are full, or their e-mail addresses have become obsolete, etc. Yahoo doesn't
tolerate bouncing mails and will deactivate these persons' memberships. It
will, however, send you a reactivation request. All you have to do is reply
to that (once you've fixed the problem with your mailbox), and Yahoo will
resume sending you the messages. We will also send out these requests daily.

Bounced Messages
If you subscribe to a Yahoo Groups discussion group under one of the e-mail
options (normal or digest), Yahoo Groups will suspend sending mail to you
after repeated attempts bounce back. To see your recent bounced messages,
view your Yahoo Groups preferences at http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs and
click Bounce history for your e-mail address. For more information on
bounced-message handling by Yahoo Groups, search Yahoo Groups help for the word
bounce.

Why does it say my account is bouncing?
If group messages sent to your email address are returned to Yahoo! Groups as
undeliverable (bouncing), your Yahoo! Groups account may be temporarily
disabled.
Messages can be returned for several reasons:
• Your mailbox may be full -- try deleting messages from your Inbox.
• Your ISP may have a backlog of email to process -- contact your ISP.
• Your ISP may be blocking email from Yahoo! Groups -- contact your ISP.
In many cases, Yahoo! Groups can automatically reactivate your account once the
delivery problem is solved. However, in some cases you will need to manually
reactivate your account:
1. Visit your My Groups page.
2. Look for a bounce alert near the top of the page.
3. Click the Alert link to reactivate your account.

g_b Mumbai- rental accomodation available

2008-10-01 Thread Vikram
Hey,
We have a place in Mumbai that we wish to rent out.

Description:
Its on worli Sea face - 2nd floor, overlooks the sea.
310 sq ft, has a kitchen, one room and separate bathroom and toilet.

The building is part of the MHADA reconstruction, so its quite new. Has a lift
and a good garbage collection system. The people around are friendly. The
entrance to the building is not too great (as parts around the building are
still under construction - no noise, just dirt!) and a few small shops make the
car entry road look like a small colony. But the house itself faces the sea and
is really airy and open.

Its great for one person, though we were 2 people living there (very
comfortably, may I add). We had a fully functional kitchen and cooked regularly
and have a functional gas stove, cylinder connection that we can totally keep
for the incoming person.

Rent: 9000 per month (we dont care if u split with someone or wanna live alone).
Electricity extra (typically 250 to 300 Rs per month).

Water supply: 3 times a day (1 hour each). the bathroom has a tank that stores
water for the entire day so its not a problem at all. We never have water or
electricity cuts.

Internet: We have a set 24 hour internet broadband connection line (unlimited).
U can change the plan etc. and will save on setup costs.

Any other questions are welcome. Please email back only on my email for more
details or if you want to see the place.
We are open to renting it out as soon as possible.

Thanks.
Vikram

g_b same-sex love in ancient Greece

2008-10-01 Thread Aditya Bondyopadhyay
http://www.achchicos.com.ar/gtv28.html

[image: http://www.talariaenterprises.com/images3/6425a.jpg]

n classical antiquity, writers such as Herodotus, Plato, Xenophon, Athenaeus
and many others explored aspects of same-sex love in ancient Greece. The
most widespread and socially significant form of close same-sex sexual
relations in ancient Greece was between adult men and adolescent boys,...

The ancient Greeks did not conceive of sexual orientation as a social
identifier, as Western societies have done for the past century.

Greek society did not distinguish desire or behavior by the gender of the
participants, but by the extent to which such desire or behavior conformed
to social norms. These norms were based on gender, age and social status.
There is little extant source material on how females viewed sexual
activity. There are two main views of male activity in ancient Greek
society.

Some scholars, such as Kenneth Dover and David Halperin, claim that it was
highly polarized into active and passive partners, penetrator and
penetrated, an active/passive polarization held to be associated with
dominant and submissive social roles: the active (penetrative) role was
associated with masculinity, higher social status, and adulthood, while the
passive role was associated with femininity, lower social status, and youth.

In this view, any sexual activities in which a male penetrated a social
inferior was regarded as normal; social inferiors could include women,
male youths, foreigners, prostitutes, or slaves; and being penetrated,
especially by a social inferior, was considered potentially shameful.

Other scholars, however, argue that male-male relations usually involved an
adult male and a youth: the older male took the active (penetrative)
role. They also describe them as warm, loving, and affectionate, and
argue that the Greek tradition of same-sex relations was central to Greek
history and warfare, politics, art, literature and learning, in short to the
Greek miracle.
In Athens the older man was called *erastes*, he was to educate, protect,
love, and provide a role model for his beloved. His beloved was called *
eromenos* whose reward for his lover lay in his beauty, youth, and promise.

Elaborate social protocols existed to protect youths from the shame
associated with being sexually penetrated. The *eromenos* was supposed to
respect and honor the *erastes*, but not to desire him sexually. Although
being courted by an older man was practically a rite of passage for young
men, a youth who was seen to reciprocate the erotic desire of his
*erastes*faced considerable social stigma.
In the military

The Sacred Band of Thebes, a separate military unit reserved only for men
and their beloved youths, is usually considered as the prime example of how
the ancient Greeks used love between soldiers in a troop to boost their
fighting spirit.

The Thebans attributed to the Sacred Band the power of Thebes for the
generation before its fall to Philip II of Macedon, who was so impressed
with their bravery during battle, he erected a monument that still stands
today on their gravesite. He also gave a harsh criticism of the Spartan
views of the band:

Perish miserably they who think that these men did or suffered aught
disgraceful.

Pammenes' opinion, according to Plutarch, was that Homer's Nestor was not
well skilled in ordering an army when he advised the Greeks to rank tribe
and tribe... he should have joined lovers and their beloved. For men of the
same tribe little value one another when dangers press; but a band cemented
by friendship grounded upon love is never to be broken.

India working on herbal cure for AIDS: Kalam

 Mon, Sep 8 06:11 PM

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) Indian and Japanese scientists are working on
developing herbal and Ayurvedic formulations to treat the dreaded HIV/AIDS,
former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said here Monday.

Indian and Japanese scientists are working together on nearly 60 plant
species and have found 16 plant species which have properties to fight
AIDS, said Kalam, an eminent scientist himself.

He was speaking at the Southeast Asian conference on Tuberculosis and Chest
Diseases after inaugurating it. He, however, did not specify the plant
species or the institutes where this research was on.

Kalam said the Army Medical Corps too were working on some formulations
based on Ayurveda, ancient Indian system of medicine, to cure HIV/AIDS.

He said herbal medicines are part of our age-old traditions and we should
work on them to treat diseases.

About discrimination against people suffering from AIDS and TB, he said:
HIV-positive students were thrown out of a school in Kerala and many women
are thrown out of in-laws' place due to TB infection. Discriminations must
 stop. Every one needs dignity.

India is home to 2.5 million HIV/AIDS patients including over 70,000
children below the age of 14. Similarly, every year at least 320,000 Indians
 die of TB.

Nearly 500 experts from Southeast Asian countries are in Delhi to
participate in the three-day TB and Chest diseases conference here.

g_b Role of religions leaders in preventing HIV and AIDS

Role of religions leaders in preventing HIV and AIDS

'Masjid Council for Community Advancement' and 'Council for Interfaith
Harmony, Bangladesh' jointly organized an interfaith dialogue on 'Role of
Faith Leaders in Preventing HIV and AIDS' on 22 September 2008 at the
conference room of the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Building,
Rajshahi, with support from Family Health International (FHI) Bangladesh.

Eminent faith leaders, government and non-government officials and social
workers took part in the program. The program was inaugurated by the chief
guest Mr. Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi.

In his speech Mr. Bhuiyan exceedingly praised the joint effort of the faith
leaders and called for playing effective role in preventing HIV and AIDS.

He thanked the dialogue organizers and opined that only strict adherence to
the religious prescription is the key to HIV prevention. He urged each
religious leader to make the general mass aware of HI V by preaching his/her
own religion's spirit and essence.

Renowned Islamic scholar and Masjid Council chairman Moulana Abul Kalam Azad
delivered welcome speech and chaired the program, while FHI country director
Ms. Misti McDowell and Mr. Shefaul Karim, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi
district were present as special guests in the occasion. The special guests,
in their speech, highly appreciated the meeting of top leaders of the four
major religions of the country on HIV prevention issue.

Mr. A F M Iqbal, Technical Officer SBC, FHI presented a paper highlighting
the HIV scenario from global and Bangladesh perspectives, risk factors for
Bangladesh, and potential role of faith leaders in HIV prevention.

The program was addressed among others by Prof. Dr. Sukomol Barua, CIHBD
presidium member, Yen. Buddhanondo Mohathero, CIHBD National committee
member; Advocate Ankur Sen, Convener, CIHBD Rajshahi division; and Rev

good number of participants took part in the discussion and made valuable
contributions to make the dialogue a success. The program was moderated by

g_b Fwd: From Ashok Row Kavi: Section 377 -- Behind the Scenes..

2008-10-01 Thread Aditya Bondyopadhyay
-- Forwarded message --
From: Asha [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 2008/9/29
Subject: [lgbt-india] Section 377 -- Behind the Scenes..
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Dear LGBT-listers,

Firstly, let's stop this breast beating. One of the greatest fall-
outs of the battle against Section 377 is the incredible process by
which various communities and groups came together to develop a
consensus and also get educated in the process. This kind of
mobilization is the best way forward.

At least I learnt a great deal from interaction with various groups,
especially feminist and lesbian/bisexual women's groups. I remember
when we men were talking about the violence on railway stations
platforms, near public toilets and such places by the police against
kothis, one woman asked me quite innocently: What are you guys doing
on railway platforms and near toilets at 11 O' clock at night?. It's
then I realized that most Indian women have no mobility due to the
unsafe conditions in which women find themselves in.

Similarly when we talked about the right to privacy, many women did
not appreciate that as domestic violence takes place very much in
private spaces and if these are unsafe for women, how can we demand
government not intrude into our privacy. So it led to much
discussion.

This learning process between men and women led to a great deal of
interaction which is a progressive education in each others' problems
and issues around sexuality. At UNAIDS, this process was carried
forward as a logical support to civil society by UN organizations
across the board. Obviously, much consultation had taken for taking
the fight against anti-sodomy laws forward. Both Lawyers Collective
and the India Centre for Human Rights were supported vigorously over
the last two years and since these two were the only ones who came
forward to ask for UNAIDS support, they got whole-hearted backing
from the top echelons of the UN.

According to the plan by the Joint UN Team on HIV/AIDS (JUNTA),
UNAIDS was to give full support to mobilize civil society against the
anti-sodomy laws in India. Immense efforts have gone into sensitizing
the Police Commission. top police officials, various State Home
Ministers, bureaucrats, judges, magistrates and judicial clerks and
officers, even jail superintendents on implications of Section 377
and its effects on all aspects of health, including mental stigmas
leading from societal pressures against sexual minorities. I
personally either conducted or organized meetings with High Court
judges, metropolitan magistrates and Ministers in various States to
sensitize them not only regarding the anti-sodomy laws but also the
various recommendations for the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act
(IPTA) being proposed by ideologically backed segments.

The plan at Mexico was to force the Minister of Health and Family
Welfare to openly come out against Section 377 and back the NACO
affidavit that supported the petition being heard in the Delhi High
Court. That was majorly achieved! We thought we had done major
advocacy with the Home Ministry without realizing how difficult it
was to breakthrough the bureaucratese there.

Towards that end, as the date for the hearing was coming nearer, a
two-pager was prepared after an urgent request at 11 p.m. one night
in the third week of August, for an impending Union Cabinet
discussion on the subject. The two-pager is available for anybody who
wishes it sent back-channel. Please ask for it by sending me an email
to my personal address. By all accounts, it got a favorable response
from every point of view, especially from the view of public health.
Strangely, it is the bureaucrats who insisted that there were no
homosexuals in India. The logic being:If there is a law against it,
how can they exist, which quid bono quo is a logical argument. I was
sent by Dr.Smarajit Jana of the Durbar Mahila Samayanya Samiti (DMSS)
to show my face to many of these senior bureaucrats and do an
educational module on the number of homosexuals and that they may
exist.(obviously everywhere in India).

As I was part of the NACP III Technical Resource Group, mostly of
epidemiologists, demographers and economists to determine how
many Men-Having-Sex-With-Men and Transgenders were urgently in need
of health services, we came up with 2.35 million through library
searches and grossestimates (gross estimates), itself a dicey way to
determine a hidden population.

The methodology of calculating this figure from census data was
explained by me to community peers called in Bangalore two years ago.
Previous estimates were all sending bureaucrats in the Health
Ministry into ballistic denials (what nonsense, was the common
reaction when I gave an estimate of between 25 to 30 million self-
identified homosexuals to one). The category called homosexual is
not acceptable to a lot of Indians though Men–Having-Sex-With-Men
is clearly understood. So we may need more visibility in the social
landscape through advocacy.

g_b (Revised Announcement) GB 10th Anniv. Picnic to Bhandardara on Sunday 05 October 2008

2008-10-01 Thread GayBombay Events
(THIS IS A PICNIC AND NOT A TREK, NO TRECHEROUS CLIMBING INVOLVED)

Mumbai offers many an escape into little known hill stations, but perhaps none
so unpretentious and charming as Bhandardara. Comfortably close to Mumbai,
Bhandardara is blessed with three essentials - rejuvenating climate, luxuriant
green vales and explicit serenity. The place shows with faultless precision the
magnanimity of nature.

Legend has it, that this is the land where Agastya Rishi gifted Lord Rama with
the miraculous arrow that was used to kill Ravana. The Rishi had meditated here
for a year, surviving on water and air to be blessed with a stream of the
Ganga, now known as River Pravara. The meandering Pravara feeds the serene
Arthur Lake that glimmers at Bhandardara's core. The tranquil blue mirror,
nestled amidst canopied forests of the Sahyadri hills, reflects the gorgeous
image of Mount Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra.

The Lake Authur is bridled by the Wilson Dam that is a powerful testimony to
the engineering skills of days gone by. The dam stands 150 m high and is the
largest earthen dam in India and one of the oldest in Asia built way back in
1910. The waters exiting the sluice gates of the dam cascades down 45 meters of
a granite rocky gorge, forming the third largest falls in India named - The
Randha Falls.

Not far from Bhandardara one can drink in the solitary splendour of Konkan Kada
- a cliff that overlooks the Konkan. Here an amphitheatre of twisted peaks,
whittled by water and wind, saw-tooth the sky. The wind at Konkan Kada is so
strong that water actually flies upwards when thrown.

Bhandardara has a special rustic charm that makes it a refreshing getaway for
both adventure seekers as well as the not-so-active tourists. Here you can
relax in nature's cradle and gaze out dreamily over a placid lake encircled by
hills from all sides or bathe under the numerous numerous waterfalls it is
dotted with. You get a taste of rural Maharashtra with a good dose of nature in
all its glory. Hence Bhandardara is the chosen destination for GayBombay's
