Re: [gecko]Rhacodactylus Eggs
Cat geckos are not a beginners gecko,CB or imports.Julie is correct. There hasnt been alot of success,in a consistent fashion.I keep several pairs and have kept them for 2-3 years now.I have a very elaborate set-up consisting of a timed misting system, progammed lighting, every cage has a temp.gauge/hygrometer,with audible warning for extreme temps.Cage temps range for 78-84f with relative humidity about 70-85%.Pothos plants and supersoil and bark mixed substrate.Breeding comes seasonally. My first group were sold to East Bay Vivarium to John. The females had produced 2 clucthes before I let them go.They also propduced more for them.Advanced geckos, yes, but beautiful and rewarding if youve got the funds and the time to set them up correctly.Hope this helps somewhat.P.S. Everything is misted with distilled water..Marcus

A newbie question here How can you tell the fertilized from the unfertilized eggs? RE: [gecko]Rhacodactylus Eggs
One of the easiest ways to tell is to candle the eggs. I had a lot of trouble finding out just how to do that when I first started, so I'll give you a little info. I use a mini-Maglite flashlight, narrow the beam to a point, and put it up against the egg so that the egg blocks the opening where the light comes out. You want to do this in a dark room. Fertilized eggs will candle a pinkish color, and you will usually be able to see little blood vessels. This is even more reliable the older the eggs get. You'll also see a larger and larger dark spot inside that is the developing embryo. In my experience, infertile eggs candle a yellow color, without the telltale pink glow and blood vessels of a fertile egg. HOWEVER, I've been told that you should NEVER throw out the eggs until they mold, explode, or otherwise demonstrate very clearly that they are infertile. Until then, there's always that off chance that it's just a slow developer. Hope this helps!
