[gentoo-user] kdebase won't re-build
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I've recently found that bugs.gentoo.org is my new friend. However, this is sort of a one-off issue, and I haven't been able to find it there. I run `glsa-check -f all' maybe once a month, or less (I usually get packages/versions recommended in the glsa by routine updates). I watch the GLSA blog, so I know when something comes out, and I usually check which version I have. 999 times out of 1000, I've already got the updated package. Be that as it may, I've been trying to get through running the tool successfully, and I am getting stuck on rebuilding kdebase-3.4.3-r2. I'm actually using KDE 3.5, but would like to keep 3.4 around until the next major version comes around (I'm just anal that way). When it goes to rebuild kdebase, it quickly errors out with the following: configure: error: you need to install kdelibs first. If you did install kdelibs, then the Qt version that is picked up by this configure is not the same version you used to compile kdelibs. The Qt Plugin installed by kdelibs is *ONLY* loadable if it is the _same Qt version_, compiled with the _same compiler_ and the same Qt configuration settings. !!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant. I've gone through some toolchain changes recently, so I wasn't completely surprised by this message the first time I got it. So, I immediately rebuilt qt, which actually rebuilt qt4 (I think qt3 is actually being detected by the kdebase ebuild, but we'll get to that). I also rebuilt kdelibs (at the same time as qt - qt was rebuilt first), then tried the kdebase rebuild again. I get the same error. So, I said to myself, ok, it's picking up qt3 (not qt4, which I just rebuilt) so I need to rebuild that. So I did. I did a `emerge -av =x11-libs/qt-3.3.6-r1', which completed successfully, but when attempting a rebuild of kdebase I get the same, above, error. Any pointers would be awesome. I've finally managed to get through an `emerge_world.sh' (custom script - if you're interested/curious contact me offlist) after about a month (or more) of skipping through packages to avoid stuff that wouldn't build. This is the icing on the cake. If I can get through the `glsa-check', I'll switch profiles to 2006.1 (then, of course, rebuild). [gentoo-user] Omnikey Cardman 4040 - Card Reader
Hi, I've bought an Omnikey Cardman 4040 card reader and have some trouble to get it work. Maybe somebody have some experiences with it. Actually it is one of the recommended card readers for Linux. I have compiled and loaded the driver cm4040_cs and following line appeared in /proc/devices: 254 cmx But there is no pcmcia-entry in /proc/devices like I have seen on other systems. Another weird thing is that hotplug/udev doesn't create a corresponding device file, automatically. So I invoke `mknod -m 666 /dev/cmx0 c 253 0` by myself. But after invoking `gpg --card-status` I got following error message: gpg: apdu_open_reader: failed to open driver `libpcsclite.so.1': libpcsclite.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory gpg: card reader not available gpg: OpenPGP card not available: general error Well, actually I would prefer the CCID driver over the PCSC driver, but however I fixed this (probably) by `cd /usr/lib ln -s libpcsclite.so.0.0.1 libpcsclite.so.1`. But now I get following error message when I invoke `gpg --card-status`: gpg: pcsc_establish_context failed: internal error (0x8011) gpg: card reader not available gpg: OpenPGP card not available: general error Doesn't matter, let us see why ccid doesn't work. Btw if it would work it wouldn't try pcsc. If I invoke `gpg --card-status --debug-ccid-drive` the output above is extended by another line: gpg: DBG: ccid-driver: no CCID reader with number 0 All at all it seems like there is no card reader plugged in, but it is and evenwhen I plugged it in it shows the name of the card reader in the system log. If anybody knows what I have to do to get this device work I would be very thankful. [gentoo-user] no SysRq
I'm trying to enable the use of the SysRq key. My keyboard is Logitech Access. It has a key labeled PrtScr/SysRq right next F12. I recompiled the kernel with support for SysRq, but still it doesn't work. It seems that the key is not recognized. The output of showkey -s, when pressing SysRq, is 0xe0 0x2a 0xe0 0x37 0xe0 0xaa 0xe0 0xb7 I read sysrq.txt in the kernel source Doc directory: There are some keyboards that send different scancodes for SysRq than the pre-defined 0x54. So if SysRq doesn't work out of the box for a certain keyboard, run 'showkey -s' to find out the proper scancode sequence. Then use 'setkeycodes sequence 84' to define this sequence to the usual SysRq code (84 is decimal for 0x54). It's probably best to put this command in a boot script. Oh, and by the way, you exit 'showkey' by not typing anything for ten seconds. It's not clear (to me) what to do. Does sequence equal 0xe0 0x2a 0xe0 0x37 0xe0 0xaa 0xe0 0xb7? And if so, is this a stable thing, i.e. a keyboard characteristic, not bound to change unless the keyboard is replaced? -- Jorge Almeida -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] burning audiocd with k3b
It seems cdrecord comes across a write error after about 3 megs in. Since this is a cd-rw, I'd suggest: 1: Try recording a data project on that particular cd just to rule out cd problems. (Of course make sure the data files are at least 4 megs. I'd go with at least 10-20 megs.) 2: K3B has an option to create the cd image before the actual burn, as opposed to on-the-fly. 3: Try the simulate option. 4: I'd also erase the cd through the menu option before actually trying any burns instead of letting k3b do it automatically. 5: It also wouldn't hurt to re-emerge cdrecord, or even k3b, but I'd try the other things first. [gentoo-user] Moving installation to another HD
Hello list, I've had Gentoo running for a long time now, before that I was using WinXP (this is my work machine, I have no choice). I simply got an old (8GB) HD, setup it, installed and started working (with dual boot, just in case). After a while, I found myself not using winxp anymore, as most of my stuff was already ported (printers, file shares) or emulated (novell using qemu and full virtualization). Now, I'm running out of space in this old HD, and want to move my Gentoo install over to the 40GB original disk of this machine. I thought about dd the entire old disk to the new one, but I guess partitioning will not like that (because of the size, and I have been using fixed primary partitions), maybe tar or something like that. Thanks Cristopher. I'll give it a try tomorrow morning. I always boot from the CD, mount both drives as above then do a cp -av /old/stuff/ new/stuff and it works. No tarring and such then. Assuming the partition containing /boot is /dev/hda1, then the following should work: echo (hd0) /dev/hda device.map grub --device-map=device.map EOF root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) quit EOF You seem to have read my mind, I was just about to ask about the boot signature and if I should run grub again. [gentoo-user] Is the best solution still NIS+NFS?
Hi list, few years later I setup a environment which shares the /home using NFS for the users and the authentication method was NIS. Is this still the best solution? My current environment is based on LDAP where all services use it. I configured PAM+NSSwitch, Postfix, and so on. Now, I want linux client workstations be authenticated remotely on my LDAP server and mount the users home. What do you recommend? Thanks, Leandro. -- Leandro Melo de Sales. [gentoo-user] mencoder did nothing all night at 100% CPU!
Hi all, I'm trying out mencoder to try a few different codecs and formats for 1. dvd authoring and 2. just compressing to keep on my HD. This is what I tried last night: mencoder 2006.06.24_09-26-48.dv -o 2006.06.24_09-26-48.avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc that was ok, GREAT file size (original 350MB dv went down to 13MB), but crappy quality - I could see all the compression squares. Then I tried: mencoder 2006.06.24_09-26-48.dv -o 2006.06.24_09-26-48.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:mv0:trell:v4mv:cbp:last_pred=3:predia=2:dia=2:vmax_b_frames=2:vb_strategy=1:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:preme=2:qns=2 -oac lavc which was better quality, and still a great file size, but I could still see some quit noticeable compression artifacts. THEN I thought, well if I'm going to encode for DVD, lets try: $ mencoder 2006.06.24_09-26-48.dv -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video -oac pcm -o 2006.06.24_09-26-48.mpeg which went straight to 100% CPU. I then went to bed, and when I got up in the morning 7 1/2 hours later, it was in the same spot at 100% cpu! The file size was 0 bytes. Heres the output: $ mencoder 2006.06.24_09-26-48.dv -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video -oac pcm -o 2006.06.24_09-26-48.mpeg MEncoder 1.0pre8-3.4.6 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (Family: 15, Model: 2, Stepping: 9) MMX supported but disabled MMX2 supported but disabled CPUflags: Type: 15 MMX: 0 MMX2: 0 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 Compiled with runtime CPU detection. 93 audio 211 video codecs success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x15fd6500 RAWDV file format detected. [gentoo-user] X font problem
Hi all, when I play around with Desktop Preferences Font in Gnome, I get some strange behaviour. Many fonts I select come up with strange characters for tabs, followed by the real tab space. For example -- here I see a funny character, then the about 2cm away. The funny character can be: courier light dotted square courier-new square terminal filled in rectangle lucida-typewriter light dotted square I also saw an 'a' for one font. This isn't just fixed with fonts either. I have a whole host of fonts installed, and for some I see the character, some I don't. But then some, like courier 10 Pitch, appear fine. I checked my xorg logs, and I can't see any helpful messages - no font issues at least. What now? This is a bit ugly and annoying obviously! What can I look at next to see where the problem is coming from? TIA, -- Iain Buchanan iaindb at netspace dot net dot au Never tell people how to do things.
