 With either false or true?

Stick with it, we'll get it working ;)
 -Joe

Yeah!!!

That's the one. Added UseFBDev true and it fired right up. Thank you so
much for the help. Interestingly, I accidentally deleted the xorg.conf that I
had modified (I just woke up, no coffee yet), so the one that ended up
working was another stock Xorgautoconfig generated one with only the above
line added.

Again, thanks so much, I really appreciate it. ;)

[gentoo-user] Is it possible to remove Gnome's 'Shutdown' option

2006-10-07 Thread Mark Knecht

Hi,
In Gnome 2.14 the Gnome folks introduced a shutdown option in the
Desktop menu. Is it possible to remove this? Or at least require it to
ask for a password, etc?

My wife's desktop menu serves as a MythTV server. When she misses
the logout button by one we lose recordings. My father - in his late
70's - is almost certainly going to have the same problem.

If anyone has a solution for making this a bit safer I'd really
appreciate it.

I would go sign up for a goon Gnome user's list if I could find
one. If anyone knows of one please write back, either in this thread
or off list.

Thanks,

Also, make sure you router is using wep and not wpa. If wpa, you need

I'd get it running without encryption first. When you get that

Increasing the quantization increases the number of pixels represented by a
single data element in the stream. From what I understand, MPEG2 does
very JPEG like compression, meaning that square groups of pixels with
almost the same color will be stored as a single data element with the
average color (and maybe some hinting). Increasing the quantization
further merges some of these groups together, resulting in both quality
and size reductions.

the analogy with flac is not really appropriate. flac is a lossless
compression, you start with an uncompressed wav file and end up with a

Agreed. There are a number of lossless video codecs out there (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_codecs#Lossless_data_compression_2 ),
though certainly none are in wide use. I'd wager that since your are
starting w/ an already compressed stream, converting to a lossless format
would actually make the video larger. With DVD it isn't practical to
transfer uncompressed video, perhaps we might see some uncompressed video
available with HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

What about this (it's what I've been doing):

 lsdvd dd if=/dev/dvd of=image.dvd

Is there any advantage to creating an ISO filesystem out of the image
if you aren't going to burn it?

yes. ease of transfer, keping everyting togther. still playable with xine
dvd://path/to.iso

why are you naming it image.dvd instead of image.iso?

dd doesn't actually create an ISO filesystem does it?

Unfortunately emerge --newuse world gives me no update for xorg... (I
 had wrote wrong nvidia)

I suggest

VIDEO_CARDS=nvidia vga v41 vesa fbdev (remove nv)
and adding nvidia to the USE flags.

but for re-emerging Xorg I am not quite shure. Try emerge xorg-server -p
-v or emerge xorg-x11 -p -v after emerge --newuse
and see if there is a little R on the left table for Re-emerging.
Probably there is a xorg-x11 meta ebuild in the portage tree? Look at
the howto for Xorg in the www.gentoo.org documentation section and
simply re-emerge xorg.

Hope that works ;)

[gentoo-user] no output from quota

2006-10-07 Thread maxim wexler
Hello group,

I just emerged quota but when I try to use it it
responds with nothing.

Sometimes it gives me the help menu:

quota: Usage: quota [-guqvs] [-l | -Q] [-i] [-F
quotaformat]
quota [-qvs] [-l | -Q] [-i] [-F quotaformat]
-u username ...
quota [-qvs] [-l | -Q] [-i] [-F quotaformat]
-g groupname ...

But usually the above options return nothing.

Anybody?

[gentoo-user] how to create bridge without interfaces!?

2006-10-07 Thread Sven Köhler
Hi,

i'm trying to create a bridge, but without interfaces! The interfaces
will be added by xend. When i put the following in /etc/conf.d/net,
baselayout just complains xenbr1 does not exist.

bridge_xenbr1=
config_xenbr1=(
192.168.0.1/24 brd 192.168.0.255
)
brctl_xenbr1=(
setfd 0
sethello 0
stp off
)

I also tried bridge_xenbr1=null and so on.
So am i supposed to do? Is this a missing feature in baselayout?

Thanks,
  Sven

This is a really inane question, but you do have a dhcpd server on your
network, right?

There is a working dhcp server working, checked and rechecked.

Also, make sure you router is using wep and not wpa. If wpa, you need
to use wpa_supplicant instead.

The router (D-Link DSL-604+) is set up for WEP

I'd get it running without encryption first. When you get that
working, you can play with the various encryption schemes.

That was my next shot at it. I am begining to suspect the AP as the
culprit, I've setup all kinds of wired networks, this is my first shot
at wireless. I did quite a bit of rtfm'n before buying this wireless
card. From all info I've come acrossed this should just work .
I've noticed that when emerging madwifi-ng that several other modules
are built. Namely:

wlan, wlan_acl, wlan_ccmp, wlan_tkip, wlan_wep, wlan_xauth,
wlan_scan_sta, wlan_scan_ap and ath_rate_sample. Other than ath_pci and
wlan_scan_ap, do I have to load any of the others mentioned?

Cheers.

dd copies bit for bit. you copy an ISO filesystem to another place, you
get an ISO file system.
