[gentoo-user] gentoo wirelesss access point

2006-10-25 Thread W.Kenworthy
Can someone point me to a document so I can set up a gentoo laptop with
a built in ipw2200 wireless as an access point using wpa ???

I need to use it for a demo of some wireless 802.11 phones. Looking at
the conf.d/net file doesnt show what I need to fill out to get a working
access point.

Or is this best done manually (iwconfig and wpa_supplicant)

Hmm, strange. What does the following output:

# grep Blue-1.6.tar.bz2 /usr/portage/media-video/mplayer/Manifest
# wget http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/Blue-1.6.tar.bz2
# ls -l Blue-1.6.tar.bz
# sha256sum Blue-1.6.tar.bz2

In particular, see if the string printed by sha256sum matches the
string after SHA256 in the Manifest, and that the sizes match. If so,
try moving the archive you just downloaded manually to distfiles.

BTW, I get 225883 bytes for this file, with the SHA256 sum of
394333a50184fc9ea78eba726204a5dbb653a07e30c94d335c52e2a4e1be0568,
which matches the Manifest, although I haven't sync'd in a couple of
days.

You may have needed to remove the old module first. I usually do this:

rmmod nvidia # that removes the old one.
modules-update # updates the modules, may not be needed though.
modprobe nvidia # loads the new one back up

Then restart X. That has always worked for me without needing to reboot.

Your mileage may vary.

You don;t need to copy an ebuild to an overlay to re-digest it, you can
do it with the version i the portage tree. You can even do it when
emerging, with emerge --digest, but be aware this will redigest all
packages emerged, including dependencies.

However you do it, think very carefully first. Package digests are a

Not sure, but could this have something to do with it?

I believe it may have. From what I've read, merged frame buffers are to allow
the use of 3D acceleration across multiple monitors by making it appear as
one large monitor, which is what appears to be happening. When I right click
the desktop and go to properties, it shows only a single monitor. Before, it
showed two.

As I said before, I don't really need 3D acceleration on this box.
Additionally, I don't believe acceleration works on a display larger than
2048 in either dimension and my virtual desktop is 3360 x 1050. However,
without the MergedFB setup, I get mirrored displays rather than a stretched
display. The Dual Monitor Howto, which I linked to in my first post, says to
use the MergedFB option, and it also says to turn on xinerama. If my
understanding of MergedFB is correct and it's working as designed and
presents a virtual single display, then xinerama isn't going to work because
it can't distinguish between the two displays. So I don't know if my
understanding of how this is supposed to work is incorrect, if the HowTo is
simply FUBARed or what.

An easy way to rip cds is to go to 'audiocd://' in konqueror, then it will

copy and paste to whereever you want and the cd ripping and encoding will be

[gentoo-user] OOO and parallel compiling

Hi folks,

I am compiling OOO 2.0.4 currently and am somehow surprised. Checking the

Thanks for the info. I noticed the first time I started amarok that
postgres was not even running but it didn't seem to notice it. I don't
remember emergeing it either but I may have.

I did figure out what I did earlier. Tell me if you think I am doing
wrong here. When I insert a CD, the window pops up on what to do. I
select 'extract and encode'. Then it saves it to ~/wav when I tell it
to 'rip' them. I then move it to my music directory ~/music. After
that, Amarok picks it right up and they play fine.

The only thing that I do not like is this. I have to use the PCM slider
to control my music volume which also controls the volume of the sound
of notifications in KDE too. So when I turn up the music volume it
seems to turn up everything else too. Any way around this?

Thanks for the help. Sometimes I just need a little help getting
started. I'm disabled so time is something I have to much of sometimes.
I like to tinker with my rig.

Now to move my OS to another drive without messing up anything. ;-)
Wish me luck.

I've removed this file from /usr/portage/distfiles/ and downloaded new

By default amarok uses a built-in copy of SQlite, so you don't really need
 MySQL unless
you use it for something else. Postgres is not supported. Rip your CDs with

[gentoo-user] ipw2200 + Intel Pro Wireless 2915 a/b/g: ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.

2006-10-25 Thread fire-eyes
I am having a very irritating problem with the wireless driver and card
above. Sometimes, but not all the times, it gets into this phase where
the wireless drops, comes back, drops, comes back (etc) and eventually I
start seeing this in kernel logs:

ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.

Unloading and reloading the module does not stop the issue, when it has
begun. I have done some searching, and the typical advice is to make
sure hardware crypto is off, by loading it like so:

modprobe -v ipw2200 hwcrypto=0

However this never stops it, or even causes it to calm down a bit.

The most frustrating thing, is that this does not happen all the time. I
use multiple wireless networks. All of them wide open, except for one,
which was mine at home with WPA. That AP since bricked (warning: avoid
LInksys WRT54G v5's, i'm not the only one this happened to) so I can no
loner test. But when I used it, i saw the same things as I am describing
here.

Software and Hardware information:
IBM Thinkpad T43
Intel Pro Wireless 2915 a/b/g
Kernel 2.6.18.1-ifc (ifc is a very small intel fan control patch)
ipw2200-1.2.0
ipw2200-firmware-3.0
wpa_supplicant-0.5.5

Any ideas out there? I have talked to others who have seen this, and
none of them ever solved it...

Whether amaroK (or any other application) plays a sound file (your music) or
the system plays a sound file (system notifications) doesn't matter, it *is*
the same source. So the same volume settings apply. No way around that.

You can, though, control amaroK's volume to a certain extent in amaroK itself.
Try to put amaroK's internal control to 100% and drop PCM a bit lower. It
might help though I doubt it will help much. (Don't know for sure because I
don't use system notifications.)

I have a 320GB hard drive with a small swap partition, a small boot
partition, and the remainder in the root partition. 'du -sh /' says
278G and a mkisofs command failed with no space left on device. What
happened to the rest of the gigs?

If you formatted with ext3/ext2, 5% is reserved for root, and will not

 10 bytes.

And just so I can talk to myself in cyberspace just like real life,
I'll reply to my own posting...

You can use tune2fs -m 0 to change the ext2/ext3 reserved blocks
percentage to 0 to 'recover' some of that space.

Thanks a lot, very informative. I ran 'tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sda3' to
crank the reserved space down to 1%. Time to start re-authoring my
DVD backups.

Alright, your original recompile of the kernel fix does work.

I just automatically installed the wrong driver. I'm used to hacking
my Athlon64 to death, so I installed the forcedeth driver. Wrong! I
needed some PCI drivers for 3Com/Linksys PCI cards.

My mistake. It works just fine now.

When, months ago, kde 3.5 went stable and I switched, my audiocd://

When I put the audiocd in and I click on the icon in media:/ window, KDE
just says it can't recognize the cd at all (cannot mount, bad superblock

The cd's play just fine if I play them with, let's say, XMMS or Xine, so

Go to kcontrol - sounds multimedia - system notifications

Then, press the prefferences button at the right bottom corner, there you can
set the volume, but only if you are using the kde sound system (arts), if you

[gentoo-user] OT - grep: The -P option is not supported

I have a script I wrote a couple of weeks ago. Part of the script scans
email files and returns IP addresses found in them. I did this with
this command:

cat * | grep -Po \[\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+\]

It worked fine right up until this afternoon. Now I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/spam $

AFAIK, the only thing I've done between when it worked this morning and
when it didn't this afternoon is started an emerge -ND world on bullet.
Has anyone experienced this? Should it go away on its own after the
emerge finishes, or is this functionality that has been phased out?
What can I do about it otherwise?

Best guess it that one of the files is currupted or has an update. Try and
emerge --sync then try again.

I'm trying to update openldap and one of package dependency is
 cyrus-sasl,
but when emerge compile cyrus-sasl package, it shows the following

Yeah, the updates work. If you're really lazy, I have stuck this in
my overlay since I had to do it on multiple systems:

access point.

Or is this best done manually (iwconfig and wpa_supplicant)

Look on www.gentoo-wiki.com, not sure if the IPW2200 card will act as an
access point or not. i know I set up just want you are looking for at
one point in time on a prisum2.5 card.

The drivers in the kernel and the ipw2200 ebuild don't support master mode.

This project: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipw2200-ap adds master mode
support for ipw2200 cards although I have no idea what state it is in.

It's not in portage but there are probably ebuilds floating around somewhere
for it.
