[gentoo-user] gentoo wirelesss access point
Can someone point me to a document so I can set up a gentoo laptop with a built in ipw2200 wireless as an access point using wpa ??? I need to use it for a demo of some wireless 802.11 phones. Looking at the conf.d/net file doesnt show what I need to fill out to get a working access point. Or is this best done manually (iwconfig and wpa_supplicant) BillK -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I upgraded nvidia-drivers from 1.0.8774 to 1.0.8776. Couldn't restart the X server. dmesg said the client and the kernel had unmatched versions (kernel with 1.0.8774). I did modprobe nvidia. You forgot to rmmod nvidia modprobe nvidia Previous nvidia kernel driver was in the memory, that is why dmesg reported the different versions. You may have needed to remove the old module first. I usually do this: rmmod nvidia # that removes the old one. modules-update # updates the modules, may not be needed though. modprobe nvidia # loads the new one back up Then restart X. [gentoo-user] [OT] Amorok and getting started.
Hi, As we all know XMMS was recently removed. I have a little CD collection that I want to put on my hard drive and I want to use Amarok to do this. I have postgresql installed and am trying to get it setup using the Gentoo wiki. This is what I have installed: [EMAIL PROTECTED] / # equery list postgresql [ Searching for package 'postgresql' in all categories among: ] * installed packages [I--] [ ] dev-db/postgresql-8.0.8 (0) [EMAIL PROTECTED] / # equery list amarok [ Searching for package 'amarok' in all categories among: ] * installed packages [I--] [ ] media-sound/amarok-1.4.3-r1 (0) [EMAIL PROTECTED] / # I have never done any of this before. Somehow, likely by mistake, I got one CD copied over and can play off the hard drive. I have no idea how I did this really. I need someone on or off list to teach me how to get the music off the CD, get it into Amarok so I get get this going. This looks really cool. If whoever can help me uses MySql instead, I would be willing to install it, especially if it is better. I only want to do CDs. I have a lousy dial-up connection here. From what I've read, merged frame buffers are to allow the use of 3D acceleration across multiple monitors by making it appear as one large monitor, which is what appears to be happening. When I right click the desktop and go to properties, it shows only a single monitor. Before, it showed two. As I said before, I don't really need 3D acceleration on this box. Additionally, I don't believe acceleration works on a display larger than 2048 in either dimension and my virtual desktop is 3360 x 1050. However, without the MergedFB setup, I get mirrored displays rather than a stretched display. The Dual Monitor Howto, which I linked to in my first post, says to use the MergedFB option, and it also says to turn on xinerama. If my understanding of MergedFB is correct and it's working as designed and presents a virtual single display, then xinerama isn't going to work because it can't distinguish between the two displays. So I don't know if my understanding of how this is supposed to work is incorrect, if the HowTo is simply FUBARed or what. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] ipw2200 + Intel Pro Wireless 2915 a/b/g: ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.
I am having a very irritating problem with the wireless driver and card above. Sometimes, but not all the times, it gets into this phase where the wireless drops, comes back, drops, comes back (etc) and eventually I start seeing this in kernel logs: ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting. Unloading and reloading the module does not stop the issue, when it has begun. I have done some searching, and the typical advice is to make sure hardware crypto is off, by loading it like so: modprobe -v ipw2200 hwcrypto=0 However this never stops it, or even causes it to calm down a bit. The most frustrating thing, is that this does not happen all the time. I use multiple wireless networks. All of them wide open, except for one, which was mine at home with WPA. That AP since bricked (warning: avoid LInksys WRT54G v5's, i'm not the only one this happened to) so I can no loner test. But when I used it, i saw the same things as I am describing here. Re: [gentoo-user] 320GB hard drive maxed at ~280GB?
I have a 320GB hard drive with a small swap partition, a small boot partition, and the remainder in the root partition. 'du -sh /' says 278G and a mkisofs command failed with no space left on device. What happened to the rest of the gigs? If you formatted with ext3/ext2, 5% is reserved for root, and will not appear in df output. This would account for about 15G. Another 7.3% (or about 23G) is lost due to the fact that linux and df count 1GB as 1073741824 bytes, while manufactures sell drives counting 1GB as 10 bytes. And just so I can talk to myself in cyberspace just like real life, I'll reply to my own posting... You can use tune2fs -m 0 to change the ext2/ext3 reserved blocks percentage to 0 to 'recover' some of that space. -Richard Thanks a lot, very informative. I ran 'tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sda3' to crank the reserved space down to 1%. Time to start re-authoring my DVD backups. - Grant -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
