[gentoo-user] udev upgrade issues

2006-11-28 Thread Mick
Hi All,

My turn to upgrade today to udev-103 and noticed the following symptoms:

1. My WiFi USB adaptor is no-longer detected at boot: :(
=
Loading module: rt2500usb - CVS (N/A) by http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com.
rt2500usb-rt2x00_vendor_request: Error - vendor request error. Request 0x09
failed for offset 0x with error -110.
rt2500usb-rt2500usb_alloc_dev: Error - Failed to initialize device.
rt2500usb-rt2500usb_probe: Error - Failed to allocate device.
usbcore: registered new driver rt2500usb
=

On the other hand, pull it out and plug it back in works fine:
=
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
wmaster0: Selected rate control algorithm 'simple'
wlan0: starting scan
wlan0: scan completed
wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0
wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
=
Does the detection of the adaptor at boot fail because of the order in which
the module is loaded by udev?
PS. I did not have a wireless router in the vicinity at the time, hence the AP
MAC number.

2. I am getting an error when udev starts at boot time:
=
udevd [622]: add_to_rules: unknown key `MODALIAS`
in /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules:4
udevd [622]: add_to_rules: unknown key `MODALIAS`
in /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules:10
udevd [622]: add_to_rules: unknown key `MODALIAS`
in /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules:14
=

The first relevant lines from this file are:
=
# modprobe $modalias loads all possibly appropriate modules
ACTION==add, SUBSYSTEM==pcmcia, MODALIAS==?*, \
RUN+=/sbin/modprobe $modalias
=
Should I report this, or should I ignore it?

3. A stupid boot error I was getting for the last 2.5 years about my scanner
(probably due to coldplug) is now gone - hurray!

TIA for any ideas on 1 2 above.

Mick

Unless you have /etc/init.d in CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK. This makes sense, if
you are not in the habit of modifying the init scripts, as it avoids all
the problems caused by leftover init scripts or services not starting

Aha! Used to know that. Thanks.

As it is written, it is probably a faulty hardware problem.
Try re-emerging. If it dies again *randomly* (i.e. by segfaulting in
another location), 99% it's a faulty RAM/processor problem.
Quite right. Redid the job and it came through clean. Very hot weather

I know it's annoying, but if it's the case, better cooling could save

Re: [gentoo-user] udev 103, alsa dual soundcard problem

2006-11-28 Thread Michael Schreckenbauer
Hi,

Am Montag, 27. November 2006 22:55 schrieb Dave Jones:
Yesterday I upgraded udev to 103, but have hit some problems with alsa
 configuration of multiple sound cards.
I have an 'on board' Intel 8x0 sound card which I use for VoIP
telephony, and a PCI Creative Audigy which I use to play music.
The Audigy is configured to alsa as sound card 0, while the Intel card
is sound card 1. This set up has worked perfectly for years.
The udev 103 upgrade recommends removing coldplug. However, the alsa
initialisation script (alsasound) depend on both coldplug and hotplug.
If I remove coldplug from the boot runlevel alsasound fails, leaving
only the Intel sound card initialised.
Even worse is that udev seems to discover the sound cards in the reverse
order to coldplug. My Audigy card becomes /dev/dsp1 and the Intel card
is /dev/dsp0. Unfortunately, Audacious, my music player of choice,
doesn't seem to offer any choice of which dsp to use.
To put it mildly, this is a major pain; I don't want to listen to music
played through the VoIP headset connected to the Intel card.
Is there any way I can persuade udev to generate the /dev entries for my
sound cards in a particular order, so that Audacious can continue to
 work with /dev/dsp0?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may be able to give.

I had this problem some time ago. The solution was to add

options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-intel8x0 index=1

to /etc/modules.d/alsa

run modules-update and restart alsa (or reboot) after that.

 Cheers, Dave

You only need to update them after new kernel installation and maybe
after recompiling a kernel. You should always know when you update a
kernel 'coz you do it maually right? :-) So then remember to run
module-update as well. With some man page reading you may event find a
hook out of genkernel to do it automatically (but I never bothered

You do know that `emerge -u gentoo-sources` does not install a new kernel,
right? It only installs the sources (hence the name). module-rebuild needs to
be run after you've actually configured, compiled and installed a new
kernel...

Yup, actually that is what I am using now. I said apcups but it is
actually nut and upsmon that I am using. Sorry. I tried apcups but it
wouldn't work either.

The powstatd program works very well. It is small and really simple to
set up. I used it before I switched to Gentoo and is the only thing I
have not been able to get to work since switching. Right now, if the
power fails, my computer will just keep running until it cuts off. It
sees that the power has failed but doesn't do anything about it. I had
powstatd set up that if the power fails for longer than 15 minutes, then
the shutdown started. Out here if the power is off longer than about 10
minutes, it will be a while. This happened the other day and I had to
manually shutdown my system. According to the log, it didn't even know
the power had failed this time.

When I get another UPS it will a APC one. Then maybe I can get it to
work like it should. I do like this one though. It can last a long
time with my monitor turned off. I just wish powstatd was in portage.

Only the deb page mentions binaries.
In the rpm page, the only example uses a src.rpm. Actually, I

word binary) in the whole page.
So imho it was not that clear (at least for the rpm case).

Re: [gentoo-user] OT: wlan0 is sssloooow [99% SOLVED]

2006-11-28 Thread Sergio Polini
Richard Fish:
Ok, two things to try. First, remove the 192.168.2.1 nameserver
from resolve.conf. That nameserver may be broken and unable to
resolve names on the internet. This should help the ping
 www.google.com case.

Yes, I've already said that, but you are great! ;-)
I read your message this morning quickly, when I was going to work,
and didn'understand it.
Then I've spoken to a colleague of mine, a true network guru, a very
capable ethical hacker, and I've understood! (I suppose)
My wireless router:
a) runs a (WAN) DHCP client to get its IP address and the IP addresses
of my provider's nameservers;
b) it get those IP addresses to send them to me when I run a DHCP
client; my wireless router runs a (LAN) DHCP server too, but it is
*not* a nameserver;
c) my DHCP client was configured as usual, i.e. replace
my /etc/resolv.conf; I've added

dhcpcd_toynet=-R -h sergio
   ^^

to /etc/conf.d/wireless and restarted /etc/init.d/net.wlan0.
Now... there is no line nameserver 192.168.2.1 in
my /etc/resolv.conf and ping www.google.com is fast ;-)

BTW: This evening I've started running Windows at first. ipconfig /all
showed three nameservers, and 192.168.2.1 was the first one.
However, when I ran nslookup, the message was clear: 192.168.2.1 is
not a nameserver. Why the difference between fast (Windows) and slow
(my previous Gentoo box) Internet pings? Perhaps because the Windows
timeout is short: 2 seconds. I do not know how to eventually set such
a timeout in Linux

Second, does ping -I wlan0 192.168.2.1 work better?

Nope. ping -I wlan0 or -n 192.168.2.1 is still blocked.
Well, it's just a nuisance, but I'll keep looking for a solution.
Any hints would be greately appreciated ;-)
That's not strange, because:

sergio ~ # nmap -sS -O -PI -PT 192.168.2.1

Starting Nmap 4.11 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2006-11-28

OS details: Netgear Wireless router or Netgear FM114P/REPOTEC IP515H
Router Print Server

Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 4.834 seconds

i.e., port 7 (Echo) looks closed. Does Windows' ping (which works)
speak eDonkey? (very OT question ;-)

Oh, one last thingyou don't have any firewall rules enabled,
 right? (iptables --list)

Right. I wish to configure my real (wire and wireless connection to my
ISP) and virtual (VMWare) networks, and then enable iptables.

Thanks a lot, as usual ;-)

Even worse is that udev seems to discover the sound cards in the reverse

 is /dev/dsp0.

I had this problem some time ago. The solution was to add

 options snd-emu10k1 index=0
 options snd-intel8x0 index=1

 to /etc/modules.d/alsa
run modules-update and restart alsa (or reboot) after that.

Hi Michael, thanks, this fixed the problem.

I think these two command chains should work:

mkisofs -opt1 -opt2 -optN /files/for/burning | \

[gentoo-user] [OT] Power supply with no -5v rail?

looked at my old one and it has a -5 volt rail. I think it only hooks
to the mobo connector.

I have this in my desktop rig with a Abit NF7 mobo, a AMD 2500+ CPU, 2

I just want to make sure I'm not going to blow something up here. P/S

yes it is. -5V was only used by the isa slots. And without isa, there is no
need for -5V. So it was dropped in one of the many ATX standard versions some
time ago. If you have a fairly recent mobo without isa slots, you won't
need -5V.

worst case, the box won't boot. But there is no risk of blowing up anything
(except when the PSU is faulty). You could ask the support of your mobo's

[gentoo-user] GTK fonts uglified after update

2006-11-28 Thread Shaw Vrana
Hello All,

I just performed an emerge -Du world and found that the fonts in the few
gtk apps that I use (gaim and wireshark) have now become quite ugly. I
followed the wiki at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_and_Fonts to
beautify a while back and the changes I made there have remained intact
through the update.

In order to track down what caused the problem, and hopefully figure out
how to fix this ugliness, I would like to get a list of the packages most
recently emerged. My emerge failed halfway through due to bug 155170, so I
would probably need to be able to retrieve the packages updated during my
last couple updates. A link or a man page is fine, I'm just not sure where
to look. Of course, if anyone has any specific ideas or thoughts about
what happened to the fonts during this update, I'd love to hear that too.

Thanks,
Shaw

 Hi,

I just bought a new power supply. This is what I got:
 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159040 I notice
that this thing has no -5 volt rail on it. Is this normal now?

yes it is. -5V was only used by the isa slots. And without isa, there is no
need for -5V. So it was dropped in one of the many ATX standard versions some
time ago. If you have a fairly recent mobo without isa slots, you won't
 need -5V.

OK. That makes sense because I don't have ISA slots in this one. I do
have some in a older setup though. I need to remember this. writes
note on hand

I have this in my desktop rig with a Abit NF7 mobo, a AMD 2500+ CPU, 2
 - 80GB IDE drives and one CD burner.

I just want to make sure I'm not going to blow something up here. P/S
runs quiet as a mouse too. Fairly heavy too.

worst case, the box won't boot. But there is no risk of blowing up anything
(except when the PSU is faulty). You could ask the support of your mobo's
vendor if you want to be on the absolut save side.

Well, it booted up and ran fine. Nothing has smoked yet so I think I am
going to be OK.

Now that I have this, I have the start of a NEW rig. Plan to build a 64
bit rig next. May take me a while though. Time to do some research. I
like building my own rigs. Since I am disabled that makes it
interesting money wise.

Thanks

Dale

`genlop -l` (from the package app-portage/genlop)

Stroller.

what is necessesary in config to get this extension working? I have

It is a built-in extension (you should see (II) Initializing built-in
extension RANDR in /var/log/Xorg.0.log), but the GPU driver needs to
support it. What GPU and driver are you using?

oh ok, that might be it. I use the open source nvidia driver (nv).
But I would expect that to work with it, right?

Well, I'm using X.org radeon driver and it works. That's all I can tell about
:-)
