Hi, Am Montag, 27. November 2006 22:55 schrieb Dave Jones: Yesterday I upgraded udev to 103, but have hit some problems with alsa configuration of multiple sound cards. I have an 'on board' Intel 8x0 sound card which I use for VoIP telephony, and a PCI Creative Audigy which I use to play music. The Audigy is configured to alsa as sound card 0, while the Intel card is sound card 1. This set up has worked perfectly for years. The udev 103 upgrade recommends removing coldplug. However, the alsa initialisation script (alsasound) depend on both coldplug and hotplug. If I remove coldplug from the boot runlevel alsasound fails, leaving only the Intel sound card initialised. Even worse is that udev seems to discover the sound cards in the reverse order to coldplug. My Audigy card becomes /dev/dsp1 and the Intel card is /dev/dsp0. Unfortunately, Audacious, my music player of choice, doesn't seem to offer any choice of which dsp to use. To put it mildly, this is a major pain; I don't want to listen to music played through the VoIP headset connected to the Intel card. Is there any way I can persuade udev to generate the /dev entries for my sound cards in a particular order, so that Audacious can continue to work with /dev/dsp0? Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may be able to give. I had this problem some time ago. The solution was to add options snd-emu10k1 index=0 options snd-intel8x0 index=1 to /etc/modules.d/alsa run modules-update and restart alsa (or reboot) after that. Yup, actually that is what I am using now. I said apcups but it is actually nut and upsmon that I am using. Sorry. I tried apcups but it wouldn't work either. The powstatd program works very well. It is small and really simple to set up. I used it before I switched to Gentoo and is the only thing I have not been able to get to work since switching. Right now, if the power fails, my computer will just keep running until it cuts off. It sees that the power has failed but doesn't do anything about it. I had powstatd set up that if the power fails for longer than 15 minutes, then the shutdown started. Out here if the power is off longer than about 10 minutes, it will be a while. This happened the other day and I had to manually shutdown my system. According to the log, it didn't even know the power had failed this time. When I get another UPS it will a APC one. Then maybe I can get it to work like it should. I do like this one though. It can last a long time with my monitor turned off. I just wish powstatd was in portage. Dale :-) :-) :-)

Richard Fish: Ok, two things to try. First, remove the 192.168.2.1 nameserver from resolve.conf. That nameserver may be broken and unable to resolve names on the internet. This should help the ping www.google.com case. Yes, I've already said that, but you are great! ;-) I read your message this morning quickly, when I was going to work, and didn'understand it. Then I've spoken to a colleague of mine, a true network guru, a very capable ethical hacker, and I've understood! (I suppose) My wireless router: a) runs a (WAN) DHCP client to get its IP address and the IP addresses of my provider's nameservers; b) it get those IP addresses to send them to me when I run a DHCP client; my wireless router runs a (LAN) DHCP server too, but it is *not* a nameserver; c) my DHCP client was configured as usual, i.e. replace my /etc/resolv.conf; I've added dhcpcd_toynet=-R -h sergio ^^ to /etc/conf.d/wireless and restarted /etc/init.d/net.wlan0. Now... there is no line nameserver 192.168.2.1 in my /etc/resolv.conf and ping www.google.com is fast ;-) BTW: This evening I've started running Windows at first. ipconfig /all showed three nameservers, and 192.168.2.1 was the first one. However, when I ran nslookup, the message was clear: 192.168.2.1 is not a nameserver. Why the difference between fast (Windows) and slow (my previous Gentoo box) Internet pings? Perhaps because the Windows timeout is short: 2 seconds. I do not know how to eventually set such a timeout in Linux Second, does ping -I wlan0 192.168.2.1 work better? Nope. ping -I wlan0 or -n 192.168.2.1 is still blocked. Well, it's just a nuisance, but I'll keep looking for a solution. Michael Schreckenbauer wrote on 28/11/06 15:44: Yesterday I upgraded udev to 103, but have hit some problems with alsa configuration of multiple sound cards. Even worse is that udev seems to discover the sound cards in the reverse order to coldplug. My Audigy card becomes /dev/dsp1 and the Intel card is /dev/dsp0. I had this problem some time ago. The solution was to add options snd-emu10k1 index=0 options snd-intel8x0 index=1 to /etc/modules.d/alsa run modules-update and restart alsa (or reboot) after that. Hi Michael, thanks, this fixed the problem. Also thanks to everyone who responded to my question. The answers taught me how udev works, that's really useful, can't be bad. [gentoo-user] [OT] Power supply with no -5v rail?
Hi, I just bought a new power supply. This is what I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817159040 I notice that this thing has no -5 volt rail on it. Is this normal now? I looked at my old one and it has a -5 volt rail. I think it only hooks to the mobo connector. I have this in my desktop rig with a Abit NF7 mobo, a AMD 2500+ CPU, 2 - 80GB IDE drives and one CD burner. I just want to make sure I'm not going to blow something up here. P/S runs quiet as a mouse too. Fairly heavy too. Thanks Dale :-) :-) :-) -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] OT - Need help with MythTV and LiveTV
I hope someone here can help me, or I might have to take drastic measures and upgrade to a version of MythTV not marked stable. I've googled but still found no solution. I'm running kernel 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 with mythtv-0.19_p10505 and this evening I upgraded my ivtv drivers to 0.8.1 (I just built the new kernel tonight.) MythTV will not show LiveTV. [gentoo-user] GTK fonts uglified after update
Hello All, I just performed an emerge -Du world and found that the fonts in the few gtk apps that I use (gaim and wireshark) have now become quite ugly. I followed the wiki at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_and_Fonts to beautify a while back and the changes I made there have remained intact through the update. In order to track down what caused the problem, and hopefully figure out how to fix this ugliness, I would like to get a list of the packages most recently emerged. My emerge failed halfway through due to bug 155170, so I would probably need to be able to retrieve the packages updated during my last couple updates. A link or a man page is fine, I'm just not sure where to look. Of course, if anyone has any specific ideas or thoughts about what happened to the fonts during this update, I'd love to hear that too. Thanks, Shaw -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
