[gentoo-user] Cannot configure Synaptics Touchpad - Disabling Tapping synclient

2007-04-24 Thread Alexander Skwar
Hello.

I'm having a hell of a time configuring my Synaptics Touchpad. Basically,
I'd like to disable the annoying tapping feature; with tapping, they
mean, that the user shortly hits (taps) the touchpad and this is then
interpreted as a click. This annoys the hell out of me, as I accidently
tap the touchpad when I type something and as a result, I continue to
type at the wrong location. Anyway, enough of the whining - I'd like to
disable tapping...

On various places on the internet, like
http://linux-on-laptops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112
or http://copland.udel.edu/~doke/dell_d810/, I found, that it should be
good enough, to add

Option MaxTapTime0

to the Section InputDevice in the xorg.conf file. As you can see in
my xorg.conf file at http://askwar.pastebin.ca/453131, I did that.
Nonetheless, I'm sadly still able to use that annoying tapping feature :(

As this did not work, I tried to use graphical configuration tools
like gsynaptics, ksynaptics or synclient to access the touchpad. All
of these tools require, that

Option SHMConfig on

is added to the xorg.conf. Instead of on, I also tried true, 1
and yes. None of these work - all the time, when I run one of the
aforementioned tools, I get an error message, stating something reg.
SHMConfig. For synclient, it is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ synclient -m 20
Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?

I'm using on ~x86:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /etc/X11 $ X -version

X Window System Version 7.2.0
Release Date: 22 January 2007
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.2
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.19-suspend2-r3.045 i686
Current Operating System: Linux blattli 2.6.19-suspend2-r3.neu.001 #3 Sun Apr
15 11:44:24 CEST 2007 i686
Build Date: 19 March 2007
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

Is anyone able to configure a Synaptics Touchpad? If so, any idea
what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Alexander Skwar

Also is the above really the full package list from emerge? If not please
provide that.

 Try the following:
 #emerge =kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.6-r5 -aC

NO! If that's the version of kdelibs that is installed it'll break his KDE
installation until kdelibs gets reinstalled. If not it'll fail. In either case
it won't solve the problem.

This may not be exactly what you are looking for. But with
ksynaptics (kde-misc/ksynaptics) tapping can be disabled - and it
works, at least for me.

With gsynaptics, tapping can be disabled as well. But how do
I use ksynaptics with XFCE?

e2/3/4fs? Certain errors inside those kernel modules (even if they are

I know that Intel Xeon processors have EM64T support, which means normally full

[gentoo-user] Backing up my box

2007-04-24 Thread Mark Somerville
I've got an 8Gb Gentoo virtual machine that I'm working out a backup
plan for. Since the disk space is pretty small, I'm thinking about just
taking a full image of the disk for backups, rather than cherry-picking
DBs, mail, etc.

I'd like to take a full image every day (but only transfer the
differences), which I'll store for a week. Does this sound like a
reasonable enough approach?

My initial thoughts were just to use rsync to grab everything. Would
this be appropriate for this kind of backup? Is there a better tool to
get the job done?

Any suggestions appreciated,

Mark

You should *never* touch anything in /var/db/pkg manually. Why you assume that

On various places on the internet, like
 http://linux-on-laptops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112 or
http://copland.udel.edu/~doke/dell_d810/, I found, that it should be good
 enough, to add

 Option MaxTapTime0

to the Section InputDevice in the xorg.conf file. As you can see in
my xorg.conf file at http://askwar.pastebin.ca/453131, I did that.
Nonetheless, I'm sadly still able to use that annoying tapping feature :(

From askwar.pastebin.ca/453131:

Section ServerLayout
[SNIP]
InputDeviceMaus CorePointer
#InputDeviceSynaptics AlwaysCore

# InputDeviceMausAlwaysCore
# InputDeviceSynaptics CorePointer
[SNIP]
Section Module
[SNIP]
# Load synaptics

Which shows that both the loading of the synaptics driver and the synaptics
inputdevice under serverlayout are commented. Not sure if this is just a
mistake in what you pasted or if it's the actual cause...

A MaxTapTime of 0 does work for me. From `man synaptics` :

TouchpadOff (Integer)
Switch off the touchpad. Valid values are:
[...]
2 Only tapping and scrolling is switched off

Sounds like that too is what you want.

Also I'm wondering why you would use the synaptics driver at all if you don't
want any of it's features. At least on my laptop the ordinary mouse driver
works fine for the touchpad if it wasn't for the fact that I do want those
features.. ;)

Finally just to be absolutely certain that you're editing the right config
file..

# grep Using config /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Nope. Itanium and Xeon are developed in parallel. Where Xeon is based off of
desktop CPU architecture (x86, AMD64, et al) the Itanium (aka Itanic due to
slow uptake) is a 64bit CPU completely from scratch.

Re: [gentoo-user] NFS vs. jumbo frames

Hi kashani,
on Monday, 2007-04-23 at 11:11:40, you wrote:
It sounds like Gigabit Ethernet to me.

Yes, that's it.

Keep in mind that not all fastE or gigE switches support jumbo frames.
Additionally not all cards support jumbo frames either though you can
certainly set them to an MTU of 9000 and watch things break.

I had that problem before with the Server's onboard Broadcom chip;
fortunately it just breaks completely when you up the MTU :) Now I
installed an Intel 82545GM card that officially supports jumbo frames
and that I haven't heard anyone complain about. The clients all have the
same 82547EI onboard chip.

To the original poster, I'd do some googling and verify that all the
network cards and switches involved can do jumbo frames and that it is
enabled on each device as needed.

Check. The switches are HP ProCurve 2824 supporting up to 9216 bytes per
frame, and I checked the config several times. Jumbo frames are enabled
on all ports, and it's a rather basic config anyway, no VLANs 'n stuff,
no voice LAN features, just switching. And for everything else but NFS
locking it does work fine. A plain netcat from /dev/zero to /dev/null
goes from some 35 MB/s at an MTU of 1500 to over 80, ssh does very well,
and even NFS file operations other than locking work.
I have googled for quite a while but can't find a thing.
Anyone here using NFS and GigE+jumbo frames with Gentoo?

cheers!

when I try to update to a newer kernel (say 2.6.17 or
 2.6.20), my laptop
hangs after detecting the hard disk. If I don't use initrd, it stops
 when udev is loaded.

I decided not to submit my different kernel .config with
 this email, I
don't want to bother anyone. In case you think I should send
 them (since
that information above is not really meaningful), tell me and I will.

 Any ideas?

If the old kernel works and the new kernels do not then the issue is either a
bug in the new code, or an issue with your kernel config. I'm sure you are
probably best submitting a copy of it to this list. There have been changes
with regards to IDE drivers since 2.6.13 and this may be causing the issue. How
did you perform the kernel upgrade? Did you do `make oldconfig`?

Cheers,

Any tips ?

sugarcrm

Not in portage, but I ran it on Gentoo last year with no problems.

What's the last (few lines of) message on screen?

Did you configure your kernel to use the new libata stuff instead of
traditional IDE drivers?

My initial thoughts were just to use rsync to grab everything. Would
this be appropriate for this kind of backup? Is there a better tool
 to get the job done?

 Any suggestions appreciated,

(Supposing both boxes are Linux ones) Sometime I use
app-backup/rdiff-backup, it's quite easy and effective.

 I use ksynaptics with XFCE?

 Alexander Skwar

Xfce isn't so picky :-)

Even if you haven't KDE few packages are required:

aemaeth ~ # emerge -pe ksynaptics | grep \ kde
[ebuild R ] kde-base/arts-3.5.5
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.6-r5
[ebuild N] kde-misc/ksynaptics-0.3.1 USE=arts -debug -xinerama

But there are 94 for x11-* ...

YMMV: this result is dependent on the flags set in my system, maybe arts
can be avoided.

It sounds like perhaps you don't have the JRE setup for Mozilla. I
would recommend using the sun-jre ebuild rather than the installer from
the sun site, with the nsplugin USE flag enabled. So, add nsplugin to
USE in /etc/make.conf, and them emerge sun-jre-bin and see if that helps
you. You probably should close all instances of Seamonkey during the
 install...

 R

I should clarify this. It has a fetch restriction on the Sun java
package. You have to download it, then move it to distfiles to emerge
it. It's a license thing I guess. I do have nsplugin in my USE line also.

I do have this jre installed:

[ Searching for package 'jre' in all categories among: ]
  * installed packages
 [I--] [ ] virtual/jre-1.5.0 (1.5)

I'll give that one you mentioned a try in a little while. I'm trying to
download a Gentoo 2006.1 CD over a 26K dial-up. :-( My pipe is about
full at the moment.

Thanks for the info. I'll post back what blows up. LOL

 NO,

That is your real problem. You need to make sure that seamonkey knows about
your flash plugin. Try to make soft link to flash plugin in your
~/.mozilla/plugins directory. Then start seamonkey and check whether you have
flash mentioned under about:plugins now.

[gentoo-user] Upgrade using binary packages

2007-04-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I have an underpowered system which runs mythtv. On this
there are two partitions one the active and the other spare.
Both can boot into mythtv . As this system is running a
2005.October snapshot, i want to do an upgrade using almost
all binary packages.

My approach was something like this..

1. On a i686 machine generated the binary packages using tips
   from this list..

2. Boot into the spare partition and set PKGDIR in make.conf

3. Do a portage sync to 2006.1 and start 'emerge -K' of the
   packages for the 'system' target

4. For 'bash' the error missing symbol glibc-2.4.3 occurs
So thinking that glibc must be emerged first, I restart the
whole process (including copying the active partition to the
spare one) then emerge glibc as the first package.

5. Almost at the end of the glibc emerge , 'Illegal instruction'
  errors start appearing...sweet

I understand that a stage3 tarball is essentially a binary upgrade.
But using this method I thought I could do an incremental upgrade.

So what is wrong with this approach ?

sathish
