I believe the following should do the trick:

$ emerge gpm
$ rc-config add gpm

[gentoo-user] advice for a desktop search package?

2007-05-06 Thread b.n.

Hi,

I'd like to know, in your humble or less humble opinion, what's a good
desktop search package for Gentoo. Preferibly I'd like KDE integration.

I am aware of the following:
- Beagle
- Strigi
- Kat

Are there others? What are pros/cons of these packages?

Sorry for the flamebait :),

I am aware of the following:

 - Kat

Kat is defunct. Beagle has a KDE front end, Kerry, but I found it a real
resource hog (Beagle, not Kerry) although using an encrypted home
directory doesn't help there. There is also recoll, in portage, I tried
it on my laptop but there wasn't enough space on my home dir for the
index :(

Better to file version-bump bugs to b.g.o. Reporting/complaining here is
less likely to produce results. Remember to wait 2-3 days after the
official release date before filing a bug; give the maintainer a little
time to do the bump him/herself.

Is there a possibility to say gentoo to mount at first all disk
(including NFS) and then start the normal startscripts.

IIRC, you can modify specific initscripts (in /etc/init.d) to depend on
nfsmount.

Will be tightly integrated with KDE4, and from what I've heard works fairly
well with KDE3.

[gentoo-user] [OT] Intel D975X or NVidia 680i for stable, fast Linux box?

2007-05-06 Thread Denis

I'm looking into upgrading to Intel Core 2 Duo (or Quad) family -
perhaps the E6600 Conroe. I'm trying to figure out which
motherboard/chipset would suit my needs best. I'm planning to install
Gentoo Linux on the system, and I need it to be, first and foremost,
stable and reliable - mainly to be used for number crunching (e. g.,
Mathematica), simulations, etc... No gaming. I'm between getting an
Intel board with the D975X chipset and a board with the NVidia 680i
chipset. Which of these chipsets is more favored in the Linux
community and which might do better with number crunching
applications?

[gentoo-user] cdrtools incomplete?

2007-05-06 Thread Kevin O'Gorman

I'm trying to burn a CD for the first time in a long while. It's not
going well.

I've got cdrtools-2.01.01-alpha10 installed. I guess it's stable in
spite , in spite of the name, since I don't run ~x86. The description
says it includes cdrecord, but I cannot find it. Moreover, K3B fails
because it can't start cdrecord either.

What did I screw up this time?

root: root emerge -pv cdrtools
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
  [ebuild R ] app-cdr/cdrtools-2.01.01_alpha10 USE=unicode 0 kB
root: root which cdrecord
  /usr/bin/cdrecord

I always use Xcdroast as front-end when writing CDs : it's reliable.

xcdroast is going to have the same problem if there's no cdrecord.

I am re-emerging cdrtools, although equery shows it's already installed.
Maybe cdrecord got clobbered somehow.

equery belongs /usr/bin/cdrecord
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/bin/cdrecord in *... ]
app-cdr/cdrkit-1.1.5.1 (/usr/bin/cdrecord - /usr/bin/wodim)
