[gentoo-user] Notebook/laptop recommendations?
I'm looking for a new notebook (to run Gentoo of course). I don't want the latest nor the best (too expensive), but it needs to have Core 2 Duo. Are there any particular manufacturers/models where it just works in terms of driver support? 2 items that I would like for it to just work with the minimum of fuss are the wlan and the hibernation. [gentoo-user] DVD Drive Question
Hi guys, A while back, I wrote looking for help because I thought I was having problems with Alsa on my Dell XPS M1710 laptop . It takes me a while, but I finally clued in that the problem *might not* be Alsa. Today, I tested me theory my ripped music files are stored on an Iomega external hard drive, which was attached to my desktop. I attached the drive to my laptop and I can play and hear my music files just fine. I'm not thinking that the problem might be the DVD-RW drive - it's a Ricoh and the specific problem that I was having was not being able to hear audio CD's when using kscd. I googled and found a blog by someone who had an Inspiron 9300 with a Ricoh drive. All that really was said was that DMA was not enabled my default and to add a certain line to the kernel header file (instructions were more explicit than this) and then recompile the kernel. Before I get myself in a pickle in an area where I have no experience, I thought I'd ask the list for thoughts/opinions/advice. Regards, Colleen -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

All that really was said was that DMA was not enabled my default and to add a certain line to the kernel header file (instructions were more explicit than this) and then recompile the kernel. I would first the obvious: your laptop might not have an audio cable attached to the audio output of your drive, or the drive might not have such output at all, or maybe your mother board has not an audiocd/aux audio input port. Try any audio program that can do digital audio extraction. Xmms can do that, I can't think of any other, maybe kscd has it, but you might need to enable it manually on its config. I don't really know. If that works, we found the problem. DMA problems are usually related to the performance of the drive, and the amount of cpu cycles the bus sucks to do any job (with DMA mastering the bus can work unattended, making your cpu happy and your battery even happier), but, unless the performance is so so so bad, this is not usually a problem to play an audiocd (they can be player in 1x drives, I swear cause I had one years ago, and there were no UDMA by that time). -- Jesús Guerrero [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Garmin gps acting as a mouse!!!
Stroller wrote: I assume you're using X11 KDE or Gnome or something like this. What does your xorg.conf say, please? I'm thinking specifically of the mouse section, but you might as well post the lot to be sure. Also, is anything written to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog when you plug the GPS in? Stroller. Thanks Stroller, xorg.conf was the culprit. There was a section for serial mouse, removing that solved the prob. -- Ted Ozolins(VE7TVO) Cranbrook, B. C -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] ufed and USE flags
I used ufed to edit USE flags with the result: localhost ~ # localhost ~ # localhost ~ # cat /etc/gentoo-release Gentoo Base System release 1.12.9 localhost ~ # localhost ~ # cat /etc/make.conf ## ATTENTION: THIS IS THE MAKE.CONF ON THE LIVECD ## ## PLEASE EDIT /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf INSTEAD ## # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically # built this stage. # Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example. #CFLAGS=-O2 -march=i686 -pipe CFLAGS=-march=i686 -O2 -pipe CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS} # This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing. You # should probably be using a different stage, instead. CHOST=i686-pc-linux-gnu ACCEPT_KEYWORDS= MAKEOPTS= USE=7zip msn FEATURES= CONFIG_PROTECT=-* localhost ~ # localhost ~ # date Mon Jul 23 02:54:56 UTC 2007 localhost ~ # localhost ~ # I decided to try ufed per http://gentoo-wiki.com/FAQ_USE_Flags, however was mystified that neither /etc/portage/package.use nor /etc/portage/package.keywords were changed. Shouldn't changes be made to files in /etc/portagae, preferably? thanks, Thufir -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

What ever you change there will be overwritten when you sync the tree next time. The correct file is /etc/portage/package.use and the entry should be dev-java/blackdown-jdk -nsplugin And, this is only needed when you use this package. As long as it's not installed on your system, you don't even need to worry. Thank you. I was fooled by man portage, but I should have know better. That is, I knew full well, but forgot, that /usr/profile is temporary and that user changes should be make in /etc/portage. Should I file a bug with proposed extra words for the beginning of the portage man page? thanks again, allan -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

I'm sure there isn't a problem with the audio cable not being connected. The laptop is a Dell and it is pretested before leaving the factory. The thing is, the laptop came with Windows Vista on it. Windows Vista got booted the first time that I turned the laptop on to the point where I got the setup screen that you get the first time. This was only because I wasn't quick enough hitting the F2 button to get into the BIOS. I never set Vista up, I installed Gentoo and the laptop does not dual boot. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
