Hmm, why is this a problem? As long as you always umount before pulling the

No. /etc/make.profile is a softlink into the portage tree. What ever you
change there will be overwritten when you sync the tree next time. The
correct file is /etc/portage/package.use and the entry should be

dev-java/blackdown-jdk -nsplugin

And, this is only needed when you use this package. As long as it's not

[gentoo-user] Tkinter, where ?

Put tk in your USE line in make.conf and then re-emerge python.

 [ebuild   R   ] dev-lang/python-2.4.4-r4  USE=berkdb doc gdbm ipv6
 ncurses readline ssl tk -bootstrap -build -examples -nocxx -nothreads
 -ucs2

Note, you may have to re-emerge Scribus, not real sure on that one. You
could always try it first I guess and if it doesn't work, re-emerge it then.

Hope that helps.

It is ignored by portage as the scribus ebuild has no tk use flag which
should probably implemented. With this use flag portage will complain
about missing tkinter and advises you to reinstall python with tkinter
support.

I had this kind of problem with another package before.

This only affects users who don`t have the tk use flag set for python
and want to use the scribus font sampler script. As such things should
automatically treated by portage, there should be filed a bug.

I don't use scribus myself, but i can file the bug. I don`t think it is
a big thing to fix, just introduce the tk use flag in the ebuild and and
add a check whether python is built with the tk use flag.

There are also other things in the ebuild which i think they should be

Ok, after some trials I booted with a new working 2.6.18 kernel.

The main goal of a new kernel was to update the Zydas USB Wireless

Now I have some problems...
First the connection is a 22 Mbits vs. 54 Mbits from card.
Second, if I start to download a file (like a new kernel) the connection
works for few seconds and after it failed.
The only message by dmesg sometime before is:

but the connection works until until a ftp connection.

FDO .desktop files should have Type and Name keys, e.g:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Type=Application

Terminal=false
Exec=Xephyr -screen 1024x768 -query flea -once :2

So looks like whatever is installing/manipulating the .desktop file is
not seeing those keys. Why is it allowed to occur? I suppose it's not
allowed and that's why the program is complaining. What are you
expected to do? Likely you'd search/create a bug at bugs.gentoo.org.
Could either be a problem with the .ebuild or ustream. I'm guessing the
latter. How would you know that? Not sure what that is. Users
aren't expected to know everything (neither are developers in fact).
When in doubt, do as you did and ask.

  This one is from kde-base/kcontrol-3.5.5:

  LOG: preinst
  /usr/kde/3.5/share/applications/kde/panel_appearance.desktop: required
  key Name not found --

   required key Type not found
  Why is this allowed to occur? What am I expected to do about it, and
  how would I know that, given that I'm a user, not a developer?

 FDO .desktop files should have Type and Name keys, e.g:

 [Desktop Entry]
 Encoding=UTF-8
 Version=1.0
 Type=Application

 Terminal=false
 Exec=Xephyr -screen 1024x768 -query flea -once :2
 Name[en_US]=flea
 Icon[en_US]=/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-xterm.png
 Name=flea

 Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-xterm.png

As a quick fix, here is what a healthy panel_appearance.desktop file looks
like:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Hidden=true
Name=panel_appearance
Type=Application

Run 'desktop-file-validate
/usr/kde/3.5/share/applications/kde/panel_appearance.desktop',
after editing and saving to check that it is now valid.

Cheers,
Rick

I assume you're using X11 KDE or Gnome or something like this.

What does your xorg.conf say, please?
I'm thinking specifically of the mouse section, but you might as well

Also, is anything written to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog

I've built the kernel many times using 'genkernel --menuconfig all'. I
meant that the blog I read said to go in and edit the kernel header file
and place a certain line of text into it related to DMA
 2)generally,you should enable dma for dvd/cd drives and hard disks...you

 dma:

I already tried rebuilding the kernel to ensure that DMA was compiled
into it. It doesn't have any affect on the DVD drive - with or without
DMA compiled into the kernel, there is still no sound when trying to
play an audio CD.

 Hi guys,

 A while back, I wrote looking for help because I thought I was having
 problems with Alsa on my Dell XPS M1710 laptop . It takes me a while,
 but I finally clued in that the problem *might not* be Alsa. Today, I
 tested me theory my ripped music files are stored on an Iomega
 external hard drive, which was attached to my desktop. I attached the
 drive to my laptop and I can play and hear my music files just fine.

 I'm not thinking that the problem might be the DVD-RW drive - it's a
 Ricoh and the specific problem that I was having was not being able to
 hear audio CD's when using kscd. I googled and found a blog by someone
 who had an Inspiron 9300 with a Ricoh drive. All that really was said
 was that DMA was not enabled my default and to add a certain line to the
 kernel header file (instructions were more explicit than this) and then
 recompile the kernel.

 Before I get myself in a pickle in an area where I have no experience, I
 thought I'd ask the list for thoughts/opinions/advice.

 Regards,

 Colleen

Are you sure that the CD track is unmuted (look in alsamixer or
similar)?

I would first the obvious: your laptop might not have an audio cable
attached to the audio output of your drive, or the drive might not have
such output at all, or maybe your mother board has not an audiocd/aux
audio input port. Try any audio program that can do digital audio
extraction. Xmms can do that, I can't think of any other, maybe kscd
has it, but you might need to enable it manually on its config. I don't
really know.

If that works, we found the problem.

DMA problems are usually related to the performance of the drive, and the
amount of cpu cycles the bus sucks to do any job (with DMA mastering the bus
can work unattended, making your cpu happy and your battery even happier),
but, unless the performance is so so so bad, this is not usually a problem
to play an audiocd (they can be player in 1x drives, I swear cause I had one
years ago, and there were no UDMA by that time).

Thanks Stroller, xorg.conf was the culprit. There was a section for
serial mouse, removing that solved the prob.

[gentoo-user] ufed and USE flags

2007-07-22 Thread Thufir

I used ufed to edit USE flags with the result:

localhost ~ #
localhost ~ #
localhost ~ # cat /etc/gentoo-release
Gentoo Base System release 1.12.9
localhost ~ #
localhost ~ # cat /etc/make.conf

## ATTENTION: THIS IS THE MAKE.CONF ON THE LIVECD ##
## PLEASE EDIT /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf INSTEAD  ##

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
#CFLAGS=-O2 -march=i686 -pipe
CFLAGS=-march=i686 -O2 -pipe
CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS}
# This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing. You
# should probably be using a different stage, instead.
CHOST=i686-pc-linux-gnu
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=
MAKEOPTS=
USE=7zip msn
FEATURES=
CONFIG_PROTECT=-*
localhost ~ #
localhost ~ # date
Mon Jul 23 02:54:56 UTC 2007
localhost ~ #
localhost ~ #

I decided to try ufed per http://gentoo-wiki.com/FAQ_USE_Flags,
however was mystified that neither /etc/portage/package.use nor
/etc/portage/package.keywords were changed.

Shouldn't changes be made to files in /etc/portagae, preferably?

thanks,

As long as it's not
 installed on your system, you don't even need to worry.

Thank you. I was fooled by man portage, but I should have know
better. That is, I knew full well, but forgot, that /usr/profile is
temporary and that user changes should be make in /etc/portage.
Should I file a bug with proposed extra words for the beginning of the
portage man page?

thanks again,

Well, in response to this, I ripped a track from a CD using
kaudiocreator. The track ripped, encoded and played fine from the hard
drive.

I'm sure there isn't a problem with the audio cable not being
connected. The laptop is a Dell and it is pretested before leaving the
factory. The thing is, the laptop came with Windows Vista on it.
Windows Vista got booted the first time that I turned the laptop on to
the point where I got the setup screen that you get the first time.
This was only because I wasn't quick enough hitting the F2 button to get
into the BIOS. I never set Vista up, I installed Gentoo and the laptop
does not dual boot.
