If the problem isn't resolved yet you should try finding on google how to
enable php in apache and check _all_ your configuration files (handlers,
mime...). Or perhaps your own configuration conflicts somehow with one needed to
use php.
I had similar problem long time ago and I solved it that way.

The real trouble here is for people who want to pursuit the academic

are ridicolous (maximum ever is 1500 Euros/month), contracts are
extremly precarious and the work is frustrating due to the lack of
research financing and the terrible state of infrastructures (both
physical and bureaucratic). The chances of becoming a professor are slim
to none and the process requires much more time than abroad (no one is a
professor here before his/her 50s). The feeling everyone has in research
in Italy is: we're on a sinking ship and we have to flee no matter how.

Italy's scientific production, strangely, is of relatively good quality
and even quantity nonetheless. The reasons are mostly two: the
scientific graduates are often of good quality and people staying here
for research must be *really* motivated.

Hello purple,

for some reason automounting on a new gentoo install with KDE don't
work.. i tried numerous forums but didnt found the right answer, even
tried ivman and autofs but neither of'em don't work as i expect them
too. hal-0.5.9.1-r1, dbus-1.0.2-r2, udev-114-r1 are installed and maybe
trouble can be in kernel config so i meant to ask which kernel options
need to be enabled to take adventage of cdrom and usb automounting?

Can you mount the devices manually?
Do you have pmount installed?
What does tail -f /var/log/messages show when you plug in the device?

*not* test for /etc/devfs.d. If both of you are sure /etc/dev.d doesn't exist

Not PCI (although it is still an option if you don't need high speed), it's

If you decided to drop the Gentoo configuration style for apache, then
you'll have to provide a *lot* more information about your Apache's
 configuration than you did.

I enabled a few use flags with ufed, and did emerged mysql, apache and
phpmyadmin; that's about it.

BTW, the errors you cited indicate you might be running suexec. What
for? How configured? Did you follow a certain guide?

I thought I once saw a phpmyadmin guide for gentoo, but have been unable
to relocate it. From a cursory look at suexec it's not something I would
intentionally be using.

I believe the following will indicate that suexec isn't being used?

Ok, so the specs that are coming out for the motherboard are:
 - amd x2 (what model of that? the brisbane? something that heats not
 too much would be better...)

go to the amd website. They have a 'cpu chooser'. So called 'EE' cpus (energy
efficient) are a little bit more expensive but need a lot less energy.

 - supported Intel onboard video card with its own video RAM
 - good supported onboard audio with 5.1 surround

you can not put an amd chip on an intel board a vice versa.

What are the best matching choices you are aware of?

none.

And what about the cpu cooling fan?

buy a 'boxed' cpu. The coolers are good enough.

 Thanks,

I could be wrong but I think there are no onboard graphics solutions with
dedicated video RAM. I don't think you'll lose much RAM anyway, maybe 128M.

There are AMD X2 with higher efficiency and therefore lower heat emission,
they have the suffix EE, BE or LV.

Talking about onboard audio, you should not have much to choose from, either
AC97 or Intel HD. Both should be okay (as long as you are not at least
semi-professional). I've heard about trouble with Intel HD because they are
not all the same but most offer AC97 compatibility as a fall back.

Concerning the fan, you could stick with the boxed cooler, it's better than
the Intel. If you need a cheap silent thing, the Aerocool XFire is okay.
I would stay away from the tower design (the ones blowing from the front to
the back instead of blowing towards the chip). They are usually more
efficient but they do not cooler the CPU's surrounding which can overheat.

[gentoo-user] Video stutters until system restarted

Look at your RAM usage with free -m (the second line is interesting).

Look at your log files (especially dmesg) for anything suspicious. Maybe your
graphic card's driver fell back to a compatibility mode or something like
that.

[gentoo-user] xorg.conf doesn't seem to be read

2007-08-21 Thread Martin S
I have a problem with my screen resolution.
In my xorg.conf file I have this:
# The favoured Depth and/or Bpp may be specified here

DefaultDepth 24

SubSection Display
Depth8
ViewPort0 0
Modes1024x768 800x600 640x480

EndSubsection

SubSection Display
Depth 32
ViewPort0 0
Modes1024x768 800x600 640x480
EndSubsection
EndSection

But in the KDE app kinfocenter going to the settings for xorg I find that
the geometry for the screen is set to 1152 x 768 and default depth is 32.
This is then what I get on the screen which means that all apps go off the
screen to the right.
KRandrTray indicates two screens, screen one takes the metrics from
kinfocenter (or at least displays the same) while screen 2 is the correct
size. But I can't switch or disable screen one to be default.

Very confusing as this happens 98 times out of hundred.
Any suggestions on how to get the correct metrics on all boots?

also, the latest blackdown is 1.4.2. Sun's java has reached 1.6 ... and some

OK, real basic question - are you a member of the plugdev group? If
not, add yourself like so:

gpasswd -a username plugdev

Then log out of X and log back in - then try plugging in your USB stick.

[gentoo-user] gensplash problem with X

2007-08-21 Thread Marc Blumentritt
Hi,

when I boot my new system with gensplash, the console is OK up until X
is started via gdm. Afterward all consoles are smeared and broken.
Starting X via startx results in a similar problem plus X is not
starting. I try to give you all relevant data in the hopes to get some
clues for my problem. System is stable (kernel 2.6.22-r2, xorg-x11 7.2),

video=vesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap splash=silent,theme:AquaMatrix CONSOLE=/dev/tty1.

[gentoo-user] Portage File Search gone - alternatives?

2007-08-21 Thread Alexander Skwar
Hello!

I used the Portage File Search page at
http://www.rommel.stw.uni-erlangen.de/~fejf/cgi-bin/pfs-web.pl
quite a lot, because it was just a great service. But as it seems,
it is gone - at least for now :(

Does anyone know of any alternatives? I'm looking for something
which allows me to enter a filename of a *NOT* *INSTALLED* *FILE*,
and it'll return me to which package this file belongs.

Thanks,

Alexander Skwar

I think I finally have it figured out. Just using emerge -u gcc
triggers the problem too, because it tried to build the newer glibc
first. Catch 22. With a little poking around, I figured out that I can
emerge '=gcc-3.4.4' Hopefully, this will enable updating the world.

The only thing I recall not liking is the fetch restriction on it. You

   Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
   integrated High-definition video processing
   with maximum resolution 2048 x 1536 bpp  at  75 Hz ;
maximum shared memory 256 MB ; supports OpenGL 1.5, Pixel Shader 2.0 .
It appears that with this mobo I don't need a separate graphics card
 unless I want very high-performance gaming or similar;
also, it uses open-source drivers (can anyone confirm?).

I'm not certain about your video assumptions. I've just install
gentoo on a sony viao (see recent threads) and never got
the intel 810 driver working. After extensive googling, the
version of the chips does not work with the 810 intel drivers.
Lots of people blame sony, but, I'm sure Intel provided a
chip that is unusuable with the 810 driver. (I believe
it's a 965GM to be specific).

Any further comments, suggestions or warnings are very welcome.
I hope the info is useful to others planning new boxes for Gentoo.

You might want to find a store where a system with this mobo is
and see in anybody's liveCD (knoppix, gentoo, etc) boots up with
a graphics driver other than vesa..

Re: [gentoo-user] [OT] advices about motherboard+cpu+fan(+soundcard) combo?

2007-08-21 Thread James Ausmus
snip

Talking about onboard audio, you should not have much to choose from, either
AC97 or Intel HD. Both should be okay (as long as you are not at least
semi-professional). I've heard about trouble with Intel HD because they are
not all the same but most offer AC97 compatibility as a fall back.

The intel8x0 driver is s**t (that's not fault of the ALSA guys, it's
that there are no specs for that thing and it's all reverse engineered
 -check the other thread).

Just as a note - the Intel HD audio driver is a different driver than
the intel_8x0 driver (Which is more a generic AC97 driver that
supports Intel 8x0 chipsets, SiS, nVidia, AMD, and ALi AC97 compliant
sound chips) - from the sounds of your experiences, I wouldn't want to
use the intel_8x0 driver on an intel chipset, but I've had no problems
with it on Via, nVidia, and SiS chipsets.

For my input into the fray, I can safely recommend the following
component list - just built one for my son with these components, and
it's running Gentoo with everything working...

* MSI K9N6PGM-F Motherboard (Socket AM2, DDR2-800 Memory, PCI-E x16
slot, Onboard nVidia GeForce 6100) - note: Don't buy the MSI K9N6SGM
motherboard, as the PCI-E x16 form factor slot only actually runs x8
channels - will seriously impact performance on a higher-end graphics
card (if you decide to upgrade)
Comes with video + sound onboard
URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130067
Price: $62.99

* AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000+ (Brisbane, 65 nM) CPU Retail (w/ Heatsink/Fan)
URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103774
Price: $65.99

*  GeIL 1GB (2 x 512MB Dual Channel) DDR2 800
URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144020
Price: $48.99

Total price: $177.97

If the video performance is too slow for you due to sharing system
memory, then you can add a separate PCI-E video card for fairly cheap
- but you can do this after you buy the stock system.

Ditto if the OEM fan is not quiet enough for you, you can buy a silent
cooling model - but at a later date.

A few things I didn't like about this setup (all with the motherboard):

Only 2 Memory slots - if you want to upgrade past the 1GB, you have to
replace memory instead of add on

Only 2 SATA ports, and only 1 PATA (x2 devices) port - less HDDs and
CD/DVD devices

However, if you're willing to live with those limitations in order to
cut costs (or if you just don't need the extra expansion capability,
as is the case with my 2 1/2 year old), then it's a great setup -
hardware rendering working fine with the nVidia binary drivers, sound
is working fine with the Intel HD driver (and it's also AC97
compatible, so you have a fallback option), cpufreq scaling is working
great to save power/heat when you don't need the processing power.

Another option (if you need/want more memory slots and SATA ports)
would be to go with:

* MSI K9N Neo-F V.3
No onboard video, realtek ALC888 sound chipset (which, from what I'm
reading online, *should* be supported by the intel-hda driver - some
problems, but all problems I've seen seem to have gotten resolved)
URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130123
Price: $72.99

I can't personally vouch for this MB - I haven't used it at all, but
I've never had *bad* luck with MSI motherboards + nVidia chipsets...

And for a video card either:

1: MSI NX7300LE-TD128EH GeForce 7300LE 128MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express
x16 Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127273)
-- or --
2: CHAINTECH GSV72GS GeForce 7200GS 128MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express
x16 Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814145147_

Price (for either): $34.99
Memory (on-board): 128MB

Differences: Not a whole lot - Higher memory clock speeds on the
7200GS (800MHz vs. 650MHz), but the 7300LE is fanless...

Again, can't vouch for either of these, but either should work fine.

Anyways, hope some/any of the above helps.

-James

Aren't there nvidia chipsets? A box in my lab has one, I guess.

 Thanks for the tips!

Yes, it fetched and installed without any need from me like it was with
previous versions. This appears to be the case for version 1.5 of Sun's
package.

How do I get the plugin into Firefox?
I have the USE flag in place, and a 32 and 64 bit plugin appears
available, but still nothing shows for about:plugins.

It appears that with this mobo I don't need a separate graphics card

also, it uses open-source drivers (can anyone confirm?).
I'm not certain about your video assumptions.
I've just installed Gentoo on a sony viao (see recent threads)
and never got the Intel 810 driver working. After extensive googling,
the version of the chips does not work with the 810 Intel drivers.
Lots of people blame Sony, but I'm sure Intel provided a chip
 that is unusuable with the 810 driver: I believe it's a 965GM .

Thanks a lot for the comment: I was wondering whether no-one was interested
or whether my planned set-up was so good no-one bothered to say so (smile).

I did look at the beginning of a thread this week re CPU/cooling/audio,
but it didn't seem relevant to my very ordinary desktop needs:
the machine wb overkill, but needs to last 4 years like the present one.
Your machine is a laptop (if I googled correctly)
I'm not sure how an Intel 810 relates to the Intel 3100 listed above.

You might want to find a store which has a system with this mobo
and see in anybody's liveCD (Knoppix, Gentoo, etc) boots up
with a graphics driver other than vesa.

That's easier said than done (smile).

Further comments on this or other aspects are most welcome.

[gentoo-user] Wireless problem

2007-08-21 Thread Colleen Beamer
Hi everyone,

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get wireless going on my laptop.
I've tried so many things, I'm a bit dizzy and don't know where I've
gone right or wrong.

First things first. lspci shows my wireless hardware as:

0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Network Connection (rev 02)

I've tried to follow this guide:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_ipw3945

When I get to the point where it tells me to do modprobe ipw3945, I get
a message (and since I added ipw3945d to the default runlevel, I also
get this same message on boot) about not being able to find:

chown '/sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw3945/00*/cmd' no such file or directory

lsmod does not list the driver even though I emerged it and added it to
the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file

I tried doing a google on the above error message and one of the hits
indicated that the person had the same problem, but at least had the
ipw3945 directory in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ I don't even have that.

I have no idea what is going on here, so any help would be appreciated.
And since I'm not really strong in networking, please lead me by the nose.

Regards,

Colleen

I have the same hardware and had the same problem. I have used the
following kludge to fix it.

Add ipw3945 to /etc/modules.autoload/kernel-2.6
and add ipw3945d to the boot runlevel

The first attempt autoload ipd3945 (from modules.autoload) will cause
an error, but the second load (from the deamon in the boot runlevel)
succeeds. When I pull the erroneous line from modules.autoload, the
load from the boot runlevel fails. (It seems to need two tries :-) ).

I have been told that the new (unstable) baselayout fixes this but I
can't confirm since I run stable.

The commentary describes gnome-doc-utils-0.10-* as being masked, but it
appears that 0-10-3 is not masked. If that's right, then there's some

Here's from mine:

'sdb' because the SATA drive is sda. vfat is compiled
into the kernel(you could make it a module). 'auto' so
you don't have to specify it and works for non-fat
drives, provided the appropriate drivers are up and
running. 'noauto' is specified because I prefer to
manually mount and unmount my usb-stick. I believe if
you put 'auto' there it'll mount automatically.

/dev/sdb1 /usbauto
noauto,user,rw,exec 0 0

/dev/hdc/cdrom autonoauto,user 0 0

Again 'noauto' forcing a manual mount and 'auto' means
mount any fs *provided* support is available either in
the kernel or as a module.

And make sure the columns are separated by at least
one tab.
