Either way I cannot have my machine out 1 hour for half the year. What
should my solution be?

probably because while you are in a GMT location, strictly speaking
you are not on GMT time. GMT time does not include daylight savings,
AFAIK, otherwise everyone who referenced GMT would have to alter their
time according to whether both GMT and their timezone was on daylight
savings at that particular time - a big mess, especially for the
Southern Hemisphere, or places like where I live, that don't use DST.

You need to set /etc/conf.d/clock to GMT (if your bios keeps time in GMT
- up to you) and set /etc/localtime to London, or whatever. I think...
I get confused sometimes :)

HTH,

Hi,

Excellent keeping GMT in /etc/conf.d/clock and setting /etc/localtime to
Europe/London did the trick.

Thanks for the help :)

Hello Mat Harris,

 Excellent keeping GMT in /etc/conf.d/clock and setting /etc/localtime

Until you next emerge timezone-data, when /etc/localtime will be set to

local (or UTC, which is generally preferable). This variable sets whether
your clock uses local or UTC time, it has nothing to do with setting your
timezone.

TIMEZONE should be America/New_York

[gentoo-user] Elicit choice of browser when highlighting URL

2007-09-14 Thread reader
KDE desktop  kde-base/kdebase-3.5.7

At some time in the recent past, something in my desktop setup knew
when I highlighted a URL, and a little list would pop up in the bottom
right corner of desktop with a short list of possible browsers to
handle that type of URL.

It would see the URL in text files or command ouput or just about
anywhere a URL could be highlighted.

Must have been part of something I'd installed that needed no
configuration.

I wondered if anyone here would know what application is responsible
for that activity?

Are you using ccache or distcc. Safe optimizations are -O2 with -march=
and -fomit-frame-pointer.

Good to hear your ordeal is over.

What I would be most interested in seeing is a diff between the
config of the working 2.6.21 and the failing 2.6.22. If on the
current system both kernels have been installed, both configs
should be present in /etc/kernels/.

And before the evil button scraps your partition table again, have
you taken Dan's advice and filled up the button with epoxy glue, or
chiseled it cleanly off?

 Sure will. Thanks Neil.

Just a final comment to say that after 3 days of messing around I
finally managed to get this machine working again. I did nothing
'special' that I know of. I just kept uninstalling things, like
everything with the name gnome in, etc., and rerunning eix-sync,
revdep-rebuild loops where I skipped things that didn't work the first
time, until finally it all seemed to come together. Magic.

This was far and away the worst update cycle I've gone through on
Gentoo. I last did this machine maybe 5 months ago. Didn't think this
was all that long but it sure was tough.

That said, and yes I was frustrated, I still prefer Gentoo to the
FC2/FC3/FC4/FC5 treadmill I used to be on. Just wish it was easier.

Thanks to everyone who answered my pleas!

Cheers,
Mark

 I simply want root to be able to login from console (tty[1-6]) or ssh
 (pts/[0-9]) without a password. Currently ssh does work fine. It's only
 the
 physical console that doesn't.

 This WAS working perfectly, then PAM or some other ebuild broke it on
 me.

 Just for sanity, I even assigned root a password, I now get a Password
 prompt, but it STILL can't login. (positive I'm typing it right) It says
 Login incorrect.

 I have a LAMP development VMWare setup so that I can login as root sans
 password.

 This was working fine until something recently changed that.
 It doesn't even prompt for the password, it just timesout after x
 seconds.

 Oddly I can ssh in as root (without the password as expected).

 I have my daevid account without password and that logs in fine on the
 console and ssh.

 I can circumvent this behaviour by logging in as 'daevid', then 'sudo su
 -' (which doesn't prompt for pw either), but I'd like it to work the way
 it did.

 Perhaps it was some PAM thing? Or login.defs? Or in pam.d/ ?

Check out /etc/securetty (man securetty). There should be at least one
uncommented entry listing 'tty1' if you want to be able to log in with just
the first virtual terminal, or if you want root to be allowed on all virtual
terminals, add tty1 through tty12.

Apparently not. Addign debug to tcl's USE flags didn't do
anything (that I can see).

EXTRA_ECONF=--enable-static didn't do anything either.

EXTRA_ECONF=--disable-shared built static libraries but
didn't build shared ones (and removed the existing ones).

I need both shared and static libraries, so --disable-shared
isn't an option.

How do I get both static and shared libraries?

 I have tcl in my make.conf.

 tcl - Adds support the Tcl language

 Is that what you need?

No. I believe that determines an application should include
TCL support (I assume as an embedded scripted language).

I need to know how to get both static and dynamic verions of
libtcl built. Only the dynamic version of libtcl seems to be
built when one emerges dev-lang/tcl. I also need the static
version.

I've posted this about two months ago without any replies. I've been
googling and trying things, but still can't get this to work like it used
to.

I simply want root to be able to login from console (tty[1-6]) or ssh
(pts/[0-9]) without a password. Currently ssh does work fine. It's only the
physical console that doesn't.

This WAS working perfectly, then PAM or some other ebuild broke it on me.

LAMP pam.d # cat login

Check out /etc/securetty (man securetty). There should be at least one
uncommented entry listing 'tty1' if you want to be able to log in with just
the first virtual terminal, or if you want root to be allowed on all virtual
terminals, add tty1 through tty12.

Thanks Mark for the reply, however, don't I already have those set in
/etc/securetty (as shown above)??

 Here's my info:

What PVR board do you have? 150,250,350,500?

What did you configure as the playback device?

Does mplayer playback video files smoothly on that machine?

As for the PVR, it's a 250. mplayer plays videos smoothly, yes. I'm not sure
what you mean by the playback device. AFAIK I haven't changed it from the
default, whatever that is...

 As for the PVR, it's a 250. mplayer plays videos smoothly,
 yes.

Does mplayer say it's using the Xv output device? Something
like this?

  VO: [xv] 512x384 = 512x384 Planar YV12

Does mplayer play the MythTV recordings smoothly?

[We're trying to figure out if the problem is in the recording
or in the playback.]

 I'm not sure what you mean by the playback device.

When you configure the MythTV front-end you can select a device
to use for playback (for example you can use the MPEG2 decoder
in a PVR-350). If you left it at the default value it's
probably OK.

 AFAIK I haven't changed it from the default, whatever that
 is...

 Apparently not. Addign debug to tcl's USE flags didn't do
 anything (that I can see).

 EXTRA_ECONF=--enable-static didn't do anything either.

 EXTRA_ECONF=--disable-shared built static libraries but
 didn't build shared ones (and removed the existing ones).

 I need both shared and static libraries, so --disable-shared
 isn't an option.

 How do I get both static and shared libraries?

Hi,

The 'tcl' ebuild doesn't depend on anything (beside glibc), USE=debug threads.
IUSE=debug threads
DEPEND=
$ ldd /usr/lib/libtcl.so
linux-gate.so.1 =  (0xb7fd2000)
libdl.so.2 = /lib/libdl.so.2 (0xb7f25000)
libpthread.so.0 = /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7f0e000)
libm.so.6 = /lib/libm.so.6 (0xb7ee6000)
libc.so.6 = /lib/libc.so.6 (0xb7d9c000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2  (0x8000)
Please check if these are glibc libs only.
You can use EXTRA_ECONF to build an app which will include
/usr/lib/libtcl.so in it's code (statically build).
Or compile 'tcl' (static) to a different location.
Only afterwards you'll have to pass an argument to the app which location to
link against.
