[gentoo-user] {OT} AMD Barcelona vs. Intel Harpertown (also 10k vs 15k RPM)
I'm trying to decide between an AMD Barcelona or an Intel Harpertown quad-core CPU for a web/database server. The Intel would have a 5% lower clock speed. I've read that Harpertown outperforms Barcelona (by 20%?), but that the quad-core implementation isn't as good on the Harpertown. It's surprisingly difficult to get comparative benchmarks on these at similar clock speeds. Does anyone know which of these should perform better in a web/database server? I support AMD on my non-critical systems, but I need performance for this server. I'm also trying to decide between a 2.5 10k HD vs. a 3.5 15k HD. I've read that the 15k yields about a 20% I/O performance boost so I think I'll go for it. I won't be using RAID at all. - Grant

To test this idea just rename ~/.oo3 to something else and let OO make a new one. If that test fails then you start looking at permissions. I always keep a spare user account named 'tester' for the same purpose, just in case the problem is something else in my home directory that may not be obvious.

[gentoo-user] mtrr: no MTRR for e8000000,4000000 found
Hi, I'm back trying to see if I can get these old Asus Pundit-R machines to do anything at all with the newer kernel and the ATI Open Source drivers. I've got fluxbox emerged and I'm trying to start xluxbox using the xstart .xinitrc method. (Hope that's right?) Anyway, when I run startx I see a bit of graphics come up, sort of a big X11 graphical X and then everything dies back to the console and I'm left with messages about not finding MTRR stuff. The best version of that I can find is in dmesg output below. There's nothing about that in the Xorg log file although it is complaining about DRM stuff. Maybe the MTRR stuff doesn't matter and it's really something else? I've not been successful getting any of these old machines running under the newer xorg-servers. After this failure I still don't see the radeon driver loaded. All help appreciated.
