[gentoo-user] NVidia drivers and vanilla kernel Linux 4.7.0 anyone?
Hi, trying the new kernel linux-4.7 (vanilla, downloaded from ftp.kernel.org) with nvidia drivers (Installed versions: 367.35-r1^md(03:00:46 07/30/16)(X driver kms multilib uvm -acpi -compat -gtk3 -pax_kernel -static-libs -tools -wayland KERNEL="linux -FreeBSD")). The kernel compiled fine, the nvidia-drivers does not. Anuone else with the same problem (read: This has to be fixed by nvidia/Linus) or am I the only one (so it is my problem...which does not neccessarily imply that I know how to fix that ... ;) ??? Best regards Meino

The file-type icons are still be where they should be, but for some reason they were no longer associated with their respective mime types. I've now solved the problem for them by going to the 'file association' part of system settings and editing the icons for the mime types which were missing icons. The program icons which do not show up in the Quicklaunches haven't changed on my system. They also don't show up in the Kmenu, which uses the same .desktop files -- I didn't realize that before because I rarely look at the menu. AFAICS, all the icons that no longer show up in the menu or the launchers are in /usr/share/pixmaps/. I can use kmenuedit, which I think edits the .desktop files, to select the icons which should be displayed, but they're still not displayed. > Surely there are things you can try before posting here. If nothing else it is a really easy to follow explanation of the underlying architectures. I'll probably post this to my LUG mailing list. I think one of the Postgres devs lurks there so I'm curious to his impressions. I was a bit surprised to hear about the data corruption bug. I've always considered Postgres to have a better reputation for data integrity. And of course almost any FOSS project could have a bug. I don't know if either project does the kind of regression testing to reliably detect this sort of issue. I'd think that it is more likely that the likes of Oracle would (for their flagship DB (not for MySQL), and they'd probably be more likely to send out an engineer to beg forgiveness while they fix your database). Of course, if you're Uber the hit you'd take from downtime/etc isn't made up for entirely by having somebody take a few days to get everything fixed. -- Rich

Interesting article explaining why Uber are moving away from PostgreSQL. I am running both DBs on different desktop PCs for akonadi and I'm also running MySQL on a number of websites. Let's which one goes sideways first. :p https://eng.uber.com/mysql-migration/ -- Regards, Mick signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

OK, my problem is I do not know exactly what this looks like. I am assuming I can do it all with gdisk (which is gptfdisk right)? So this is just a starting point of what the PT & fstab cold look like Number Start End SizeType File system Flags 1 1049kB 211MB 210MB primary ext2boot 2 211MB 139GB 138GB primary linux-swap(v1) 3 139GB 952GB 813GB primary ext4 4 952GB 2000GB 1049GB primary ext4 corresponding fstab:: /dev/sda1 /bootext2defaults,noatime 0 2 /dev/sda2 none swapsw 0 0 /dev/sda3 /ext4defaults,noatime 0 1 /dev/sda4 /usr/local ext4defaults,noatime 0 1 > David Haller > You'd have to get rid of one of those partitions (I'd say /boot). OK, I was already thinking about placing /boot under '/' anyway, as many of the stage-4 images I will be using in the auto-image installs are commonly found as using just 2 partitions anyway ('/' and swap) The '/usr/local' will be optional depending on disk size and available space to provide this third partition. /usr/local will not be needed for boot(strap) and can be mounted after the systems is up. So /boot is part of / now. > Mick > It seems you did not use gdisk or a late version of parted to created > the partition table? Well, proper alignment was automatically taken care of with newer tools? That sort of perfromance issue is also critical. Eventuall, SSD and usb3 mmc and all sorts of other media will be used, depending on the embedded board's supported interface mix that will work with the vendor's (board) bootstrap code to bring up linux. > The protective MBR can point to another one and you can select which > GPT partitions are in it. But that's getting into some rube goldberg > action. Is this true if one is using grub-legacy? While I'm at it (gentoo specific) what is the difference in sys-boot/grub-static (0.96-r1 to 0.97-r12) and sys-boot/grub (0.97-r16) in slot zero? I'm assuming that sys-boot/grub-2.02_beta2-r9++ is all grub-2 with current enhancements. I do appreciate all the inputs, and appologize again for the transitioning emails, complicated by the demise of gmane.org (my fav reading/posting for gentoo-user). I'm going to post back as soon as I get an actually 2T disk setup with all of this advise, just to check what folks think and eventually with the results of booting a variety of mbr systems (efi and newer embedded systems as they are purchased.) I have a few SSD to experiment with now and may try some usb devices after the spinning rust PT is happy. James

I haven't checked other file types. The place to start with troubleshooting is with some creative investigation. `genlop -l --date "2016/07/28"` will show you all packages installed in the last 2 days - grep the output for "icon" and "theme". Use `eix -I icon` to see what relevant packages are installed on your system. Now the same for `eix -I theme`. If any of the installed icon or theme packages have not been updated in the last 2 days, update them. I speculate that kde-plasma/plasma-desktop depends on packages X and Y, and between -5.5.5 and -5.6.5 some icons were moved from one package to the other. Surely there are things you can try before posting here. I feel unkind saying this, so I apologise, but at the least you could have posted a list of the packages that you installed yesterday. Half the time I sit down to ask a question here, I solve it myself during the process of documenting the bug to explain my problem to the list (see ESR's "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way"). It's appropriate to work out what installed packages might be relevant, update them to the latest versions, and show the list that you've done this. I think that if none of this works, it would be sensible to see if you can downgrade some relevant the packages that you installed yesterday (i.e. those with "icon" or "theme" in the name), and see if this reinstates your visual file-type portrayals. This is a bit more work, but it might document the problem sufficiently that you can document the bug at b.g.o. and help others. Stroller
