OK, I tried that and I have/can verify that I am in the audio group.
Logged out, then back in, even did a reboot. No joy. Now here's the
weird thing. mplayer works fine, for both video (sound with movies)

output any sound. As a matter of fact, XMMS errors out that it
failed to open the audio output: ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin. And I
don't get any of the blips and whirrs from the desktop interaction

Any more ideas?

note that now (after tune2fs ...) the option Resize in QTparted, is

The only other thing(s) I can think of is that there's an option
similar to the has_journal one that's turned on that parted can't
deal with, or you're trying to resize the partition too much, or
there's data past the 60GB mark on the disk that parted can't move for
you... that last one seems a bit of a stretch to me, though, given the
error you're getting.

I can't recall ever having used parted directly, though, so I'm a bit
out of my depth here.

You might want to look at the man page for tune2fs again, and see if
there's a way to spit out the filesystem features on the partition
you're trying to resize, and disable them the same way you did with
the journal... not sure if that'll help, though...

1) Remove the journal from the ext3 partition using tune2fs:
  tune2fs -C ^has_journal partition

2) Resize using parted

3) Add the journal back using tune2fs:
tune2fs -j partition

See 'man tune2fs' (as root) for important warnings information (and
I really hope I've got that right...)

Qtparted might be an easier way to do the resize, as well... shrug

So, did you try e2fsck or not? No errors?

You can also use ext2resize but it only resizes the filesystem. You
would need to use fdisk or something to change the partition table.

There's probably a tab or button you can click to see a log of the
cdrecord output (cdrecord is the program that really does the
burning). You need that in order to troubleshoot this.

What output does cdrecord give before it stops? Does cdrecord
actually exit or does it just hang? Try it with the -v option.

well, now, about the partition (after the e2fsck);

it stops something like that:

It might be easier if you just let Portage manage it:

eix win32codecs

 Available versions: 20050216 *~20050412
 Installed: 20050216
 Homepage:http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
Description: Win32 binary codecs for video and audio
playback support

and then made sure mplayer knew about it:

 emerge -pv mplayer
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 -3dfx +3dnow +3dnowext +X
+aac +aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts -bidi -bl +cdparanoia -cpudetection

Of course, if you emerge mplayer +win32codecs, then you don't have to
emerge the win32codecs package separately (unless you want it in your

Hello guys,

I was trying to play some *.wmv files in mplayer, but it seems i dont
have the proper video codec (it complains about the video only), so,
where should i put the codecs files ? Because i've already downloaded
the codecs that i need... but i dont know where to put... can anyone
help me?

Thanks,

Bruno Gola

It might be easier if you just let Portage manage it:

eix win32codecs
* media-libs/win32codecs
   Available versions: 20050216 *~20050412
   Installed: 20050216
   Homepage:http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
Description: Win32 binary codecs for video and audio
playback support

and then made sure mplayer knew about it:

emerge -pv mplayer
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 -3dfx +3dnow +3dnowext +X
+aac +aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts -bidi -bl +cdparanoia -cpudetection
-custom-cflags -debug +dga +directfb +divx4linux -doc +dts +dv +dvb +dvd
+dvdread +edl +encode +esd +fbcon +ggi +gif +gtk -i8x0 -ipv6 -jack
-joystick +jpeg +libcaca -lirc -live -lzo +mad +matroska -matrox +mmx
+mmxext -mythtv +nas +nls -nvidia +opengl +oss +png +real +rtc +samba
+sdl +sse +sse2 +svga +tga +theora +truetype +v4l +v4l2 +vorbis

+win32codecs

+xanim -xinerama +xmms +xv +xvid +xvmc 0 kB

Of course, if you emerge mplayer +win32codecs, then you don't have to
emerge the win32codecs package separately (unless you want it in your
world file), as it will then be pulled in as a dependency.

thanks for helping me, but ive already done this, i tried to merge this
codecs package but, it stills not working... and when i try emerge -pv
mplayer it stops at :

[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 -3dfx +3dnow +3dnowext +X
+aac +aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts -bidi -bl +cdparanoia -cpudetection
-custom-cflags -debug +dga +directfb +divx4linux -doc +dts +dv +dvb +dvd
+dvdread +edl +encode +esd +fbcon +ggi +gif +gtk -i8x0 -ipv6 -jack
-joystick +jpeg +libcaca -lirc -live -lzo +mad +matroska -matrox +mmx
+mmxext -mythtv +nas +nls -nvidia +opengl +oss +png +real +rtc +samba
+sdl +sse +sse2 +svga +tga +theora +truetype +v4l +v4l2 +vorbis

I cant see the:

+win32codecs

+xanim -xinerama +xmms +xv +xvid +xvmc 0 kB

And, when i try to: emerge mplayer +win32codecs it complains:

br ~ # emerge mplayer +win32codecs
Calculating dependencies -
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "+win32codecs".

Do you have anyidea ?

thaks again,

The correct way would be to

# echo 'media-video/mplayer win32codecs' /etc/portage/package.use

(this will enable the USE flag for all compiles of mplayer, now and in
the future)

The much less correct way would be to

# USE="win32codecs" emerge mplayer

(this will compile mplayer with the USE flag set just for this compile,
but if you upgrade, Portage will not remember the setting, and will
upgrade without the flag)

You can also simply

# emerge win32codecs

which will install the codecs, but it will also put the package in your
world file, which you may not want, and will also not tell mplayer about
it (because mplayer was compiled without support for the codecs)-- you
would still need to re-emerge mplayer with the win32codecs USE flag enabled.

What version of mplayer are you emerging? Perhaps the last stable
(1.0_pre6-r4) doesn't support that USE flag, and you have to unmask an
unstable version?

Hope this helps
Holly

Thanks so much Holly, now with the USE flag it works... thanks again ;)

[gentoo-user] Limewire

2005-07-06 Thread Bruno Gola
   Hello again guys ;)

I was trying to merge that p2p software called Limewire, when ive done:
emerge limewire it works, but, when i try:
$ limewire
I get this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ limewire
/usr/bin/limewire: line 4: java: command not found

Does anyone knows what should I do correctly or just tell me a better

do you have java, don't you? (google for gentoo java wiki and gentoo
java-config)

when you can type in a terminal jav... and press tab and you get:
java javac javaws... etc, limewire must work

Does anyone knows what should I do correctly or just tell me a better

[gentoo-user] Updating with emerge

2005-07-01 Thread Bruno Gola
Hey, can anyone here help me with this thing?

I'm trying to update (emerge --update --deep world), but when it try to

I've searched for Ogg Python bindings, but havent found nothing

Is there a way to update the other merged packets, without updating this
one?

Anyone knows what to do ?

Thanks :)

Maybe you need to remerge pyogg.

DEPEND=dev-lang/python
   =media-libs/libogg-1.0
   =media-libs/libvorbis-1.0
   =dev-python/pyogg-1.1

Zac

Thanks everybody that helped me, the anwser from Zac worked. I've just
did emerge pyogg and than emerge --update --deep world and now it is
working!

Thanks,
