I had to boot a Knoppix disk, install that, then do gentoo as a chroot... Which was a REAL nightmare because the knoppix was 32bit I wanted a 64-bit install (It took messing around with a kernel from a ~amd64 desktop manually copied over as well before I could get gentoo installed correctly). I've got a 6 year old NVidia card that still works perfectly and all I had to do is emerge nvidia-drivers So I think NVidia is the way to go in general. [The problem is that you don't get much of a choice with laptops. My IBM ThinkPad was too good a deal to pass up even though it came with an ATI M300.] If you have anything up to X600 (Maybe even X700) graphics (basically 9600 on PCIe) then the open source drivers should work fine... Mine is an X1400 sadly, so I don't even get LCD native resolution without the damned ATI drivers (Because it's flakey as hell with their DRI, and suspend to RAM doesn't work... Still... It needed a custom config file from the net somewhere, but it's a cracker apart from that (Except the envelope feed. You have to remove the paper to feed an envelope else you get a piece of paper infront of the envelope the printing goes on the paper instead. I also have a PSC1210. All-in-one job. I've had one problem with that under an older kernel that wouldn't create the device nodes properly (Umm... Fro memory the nodes were there, but you couldn't write to them).
