 [blocks B ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0-r3 (is blocking

What it says is that mozilla-firefox with a version number _smaller_
than 1.0-r3 is blocking freetype.

but when i then try to unmerge firefox (emerge unmerge
mozilla-firefox) this is what i get:

 snip
These are the packages that I would unmerge:

  www-client/mozilla-firefox
 selected: 1.0_pre-r2

...and 1.0_pre-2 is smaller than 1.0-r3.

how can a package that is obviously not installed be blocking anything?

It can't, but your package is installed and is blocking.

and even more important: how do i resolve this issue? just unmerge the
version of firefox that is installed?

or update your firefox to a newer version.

oh! but why doesn't it say so?

I think it's trying to with the little '' character before the name of
the blocking software. It's really easy to miss though.

Re: [gentoo-user] Sound recorder in portage

 Suggestions welcome

I would recommend reZound. I've found it better than Audacity in many
ways, but it might not be as simple as you hope for (lots of features).
It is very easy to use, so give it a go.

Wait forever again, and then the icons appear in the box, and then the

Anybody know what's going on? GNOME never used to do this before.

I had similar problems a while back. My problems were related to the
gnome profile that I had messed up somehow. You could try removing
the .gnome* and .gconf* directories form your home directory.

And how can I change that device name back to /dev/cdrom?

when you said you saw it was /dev/cdrom, it was just a link to
/dev/hd*. the * depends on how many IDE drives you have. but I'm not
sure if you can just make a link manually.

You don't have to link anything manually. You can let udev handle it.
There are plenty of tutorials on writing udev rules, have a look:
http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html

there is even an example named Example: Writing convenience rules for
my CD drives.
