2007-01-27 Thread Martins

I'm having the same problems. ati-drivers insists on using X.org-7.1.0.0
or earlier, obviously because the drivers were compiled against that
 version.

I don't have the ati-drivers source code so I can't tell if there was an
ABI change that the driver enforces, or if ATI simply hardcoded the
drivers to fail. I'm betting on the latter

In either case the solution would appear to be a hard dependency on =
X.org-7.1.0.0 in the ebuild. Have you submitted a bug to bgo?

Getting 3D acceleration working with ATI Radeon requires proprietary

 GL-drivers setting.

Before you run your game, you should export the proper LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH
 environment variable:

 export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib32/modules/dri
 end/snip

I have the ati-drivers-8.32.5 installed, but not this 'modules/dri'

have not only wavs based on reduced information, you remove the stuff
that makes mp3 sound 'better' than they are. If you encode them again,
   you are removing more information.

... and what about the time information? It is silly to have a 3 minute
song with shows as days long and even negative duration :( (well, this
could be an ``unsigned int'' issue.

I don't know how to fix it. But is it really so important? Do you watch the
timing information while listening to the song?

to fix timing there is script Mp3Fixer for amarok

Mp3Fixer (v0.9.4)
About:
Mp3Fixer is a script for repairing MP3 files which display a bogus track
length or bitrate in your audio player.
For example, if you have a track that you know is really five minutes long,
but amaroK shows the length as one hour, then this script is for you.
Mp3Fixer calculates the real track length and adds the missing XING header to
the file. Additionally, Mp3Fixer is capable of repairing broken MPEG header
frames.

Try marking the affected partition as ext2 instead of ext3

Re: [gentoo-user] boot stalls at 'mounting local file systems'

2006-08-01 Thread Martins Steinbergs
Hi, thanks for response. I dont have anything related to ldap. But booting
older kernel did the trick.

Martins

If you are using ldap, it can cause long delays for things that occur
before networking is active when something tries to lookup a user from
the ldap server, but times out.

So far I've heard of this affecting bootmisc, udev, and now
localmount. There are some workarounds listed in this bug:

 http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99564

Basically, downgrading the version of ldap or or changing the ldap
configuration seems to fix it for most people.

In your case, it is probably this part of localmount that is causing
 the problem:

 if [[ -n ${usbfs} ]] \
[[ -e /proc/bus/usb ! -e /proc/bus/usb/devices ]]
 then
ebegin Mounting USB device filesystem (${usbfs})
 usbgid=$(echo $(getent group usb) | awk -F: '{print $3}')
 mount -t ${usbfs} usbfs /proc/bus/usb \
 ${usbgid:+-o devmode=0664,devgid=${usbgid}}
eend $? Failed to mount USB device filesystem
 fi

This tries to do a lookup of the 'usb' group.

If it does indeed turn out to be an ldap issue, add a comment to the
linked bug or at least let me know and I'll do it.

I sent my laptop into sleep mode via the popup menu on the battery
monitor in KDE. It did this, however, when the machine came out of
sleep mode, there was no monitor. It wasn't on. I tried my basic set
of tricks: try and change the screen brightness; try and switch
monitors via the key combo on the laptop; close the lid and re-open
it; press the key combo to turn the monitor off; press the key combo
to go back to sleep mode (didn't work).

Eventually I picked a button that did work: POWER. The system shut
down normally! After X11 died, it went back the the framebuffer and
  acted like nothing had happened.

However, right after this, KDE has been acting *really* slow. Much
slower than it should. # top revealed that artsd, xorg, and kded were
eating cpu time. This is the same behaviour as on Kubuntu before. I
suspect the cause was the same, however, I don't remember exactly so I
  won't point fingers.

Do any of you know what this is? Do you think if I recompiled xorg,
kde, and arts if it'd fix the problem? Or, even better, is there a
way to axe all the configuration settings and see if that fixes the
problem? Please help, I think it's affecting Gnome as well (scary!)

 recompiling will fix NOTHING.

There are a lot of temporary files in /tmp and ~ / remove them and see if
 the problem is still there.
All KDE related configs are in ~/.kde3.5 (.kde3.4), so (re)moving that sets
KDE back to its 'fresh' state.

read ~/.xsession-errors
maybe some hint there, once i had that file fill free space on /home with few
GB 'cause busy filling errors

before start KDE also try remove previous session saves, maybe there some
sassion saved in bad state
rm ~/.kde/share/config/session/*

I installed Jffnms on a server, along with the other required software:
apache2, php4, postgresql etc etc as describe in this document:

 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/jffnms.xml

I can find the main setup pages in the
/var/www/localhost/htdocs/htdocs/admin/ dir from the command line:
 menu.php sat_session.inc.php
 calendar.php menu_frame.php satellite.php
 color_select.php menu_interface_list.php setup.php

http://192.168.2.9/ pops up the usually apache2 default page

But I cannot get to the
/var/www/localhost/htdocs/htdocs/admin/setup.php page, from a web browser
running on neither the server, nor anywhere on the network. The default
apache2 page does pop up on a web browser from any machine on
the network, including the apache2 server.

This is probably really simple. Bear in mind that I'm far, far
from a whiz with apache et.al. being more of a 'hardware type'.

are the repeated htdocs/htdocs dirs the problem?

What's wrong or what do I need to tryto get this to work.?

 James

check permissions on those directories and files, if that the case, then
change 'apache' can read, and for setup time give write access too to config
files.

 Hi folks,

this is about Powerpoint Presentations and Gentoo and (almost) any other
linux distribution. There are two different types of presentations: *.ppt
and *.pps. The difference is that *.pps have an interpreter linked into the
document so you can run it under Windows without having Powerpoint.

*.ppt do not cause any problems but *.pps do. If you do a file
something.pps it reports it as Microsoft Office Document without
 qualifying what kind of document.

As long as you have set all your file associations of Microsoft documents
to OpenOffice, it will work for you because OO still is a monolithic
application that handles all of them.

This is not true if you have set file associations of Microsoft documents
to specific applications in any other office suite, including but not
limited to koffice. In the case of koffice, kword gets started, It starts
to load the presentation and decides correctly that this isn't a word
 document.

So my question is: Aren't there any mime type and/or magic file experts
here that can extent the magic file to recognise *.pps files correctly?

Would be great if we could get that sorted out.

I tried myself. Unfortunately, I am not a magic file expert and failed
 badly. :-(

most simple solution i can give is to rename file.pps to file.ppt

for my understanding pps does only that that opening it starts slide show not
the editor and powerpoint installation still has to be present

Re: [gentoo-user] Ethernet Module (3c59x) not recognized

2006-02-16 Thread Gilberto Martins
This problem was solved already, I really commited a huge compilatiom mistake.
So, I decided using genkernl to help. But this is another thread ...

2006/2/15, Emmanuel Durin [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
The make module_install command installs the modules into
/lib/modules/2.x.xx/. Search for your file into this directory instead
 of into the sources directory.
If you can't find it, go to /lib/modules/2.x.xx/ and browse to see if
there is some modules. If you find some, then you should probably have
forgotten to enable the compilation of the 3c59x module, or you have
included it directly into the kernel. Rerun make menuconfig and use
the search function (press the / key) to find and configure it.

I really didn't know about the / key in make menuconfig. Thanks for
that, I will try that out after.

Not likely to happen during installation, but if you use udev, the
device nodes may not exist in your backups (depending upon how you do
your backups...). So a restore of a backup of your root filesystem
from a crash recovery or live CD may not restore any device nodes to
 your root filesystem.

Well, I am not using udev. It is a install from scratch. So there is no backup.

Anyway, ignore my message...I didn't quite understand that the problem

No way, pal. Now I will read about udev, and see if I can get some

2006-02-14 Thread Gilberto Martins
Hi again.

I'm a bit confused by Gilberto's statement: Of course I had no
 network for this.
If you mean that I have no networking because of this error and the
modprobe line above makes no difference then I might be inclined to
swap the network card out for another one.

Yeah, that is what I intended to say, sorry for that. Probably I was sleepy ...
But worst than not finding the module to be loaded, is executing
lsmod and having nothing listed. I tried to compile the kernel
following the guidelines in the handbook, like make menuconfig, make
and make module_install. But it seems the the modules were not
generated.

I tried find /usr/ -iname *3c59x* but only the source code was
listed. I was expecting to find the *.ko. What I missed?

I see the problem is not relative to the nic module, but to any module.
Guess I should gather more details and start a new thread.

But the error right after that means what it says: No init found, ie. it
has mounted a filesystem (else you get another error-: Kernel panic -

From that, one can deduce the OP probably pointed the kernel to the
wrong root partition (ie. /boot, or /usr, etc.)

No i don't think is *has* to be a fixed name, but most people comply to

Using 'genkernel' so don't remember, check install guide if interested.

It can be called anything, but the file name you give it in /boot, of
course, has to be the one you call out in the grub.conf line. So, you copy

Most modern BIOS have the option to boot from a lot of devices, you
can check if your BIOS have options to boot from hd1, or primary
slave, whatever your BIOS call it, just enter the SETUP and check for
 it.

Yeah, it is already configured to start the first Hard Disk.

LILO won't help you, you're installing the boot loader in a slave
disk, whatever you do, your BIOS will still call for the master (in
most cases), check your grub config twice, change it for the slave
drive (hd(1,0)?!) and change your BIOS to boot from the slave...

I really haven't checked for it, but i did emerge lilo to have a try
at lilo, anyway. After that, I emerge --unmerge grub it. Hope I
haven't done something too wrong.

Finally, I did:

cd /usr/src/linux
make install

After that, I had the folowing /boot content:

Now, after rebooting, it really went straight, with text menu. It
starts loading really fast the system, but all of a sudden, a Kernel

Which init= I should use ? the problem is the lack of a initrd

I have a problem and maybe it is simple to use. But consider I am a

I have the following Disc Configuration:

/dev/hda = CDROM
/dev/hdb = Hard Disk

After hours of pain, I decided to start gentoo all in memory, using
gentoo docache string at minimun CD start. After that, all the steps
went fine.

Following Gentoo handbook, I did the following:

/dev/hdb1 - /boot
/dev/hdb2 - swap
/dev/hdb3 - /

During the start of installation, I did as recommended in handbook:

/mnt/gentoo - /
/mnt/gentoo/boot - /boot

Then, kindly selected GRUB, and did this simple /boot/grub.conf file:

default 0
timeout 0
splashimage=(dhb0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Gentoo Linux 2.6.12.gentoo-r10
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/2.6.12-gentoo-r10 root=/dev/hdb3

After this, I tried to exec

grub-install (hd0)

And a message points that /dev/hdb1 doe not have any corresponding
BIOS drive. So I did it by GRUB itself.

Now, I start the computer, and receive the following messages:

GRUB Loading stage1.5 - here I wait several minutes, and the HD is working
GRUB loading, please wait - here I wait much more.

As I see, I am having troubles with GRUB itself, not Gentoo. Can

I would boot with install cd and extract latest stage3 or try to extract only
missing files. then chroot, emerge --sync, emerge coreutils and emerge
--update

dont know is this best solution, at least i did it some time ago when after
update system was broke.

 Hi,

 Hi,

I don't know if you've solved this issue. I'm using the Xine engine
with amaroK (1.3.6) and it works fine. Did you choose an output
plugin in the 'Configure amaroK -- Engine' screen, or did you let it
auto detect? Mine is set to auto detect.

 Colleen

I came to conclusion this isn't amarok or xine problem. different boots with
different results with no change between. this sound bug comes together with
fast clock what i hadn't solve, but buggy sound is only amarok, xine or xmms
plays nice. at leats fast clock i can sync with hardware.

 I don't use kdm. Probably it's the problem? ;-)
 After rm -R /tmp/* the problem isn't solved... :-(

remove those files from user directory;
maybe .xsession-errors has some interesting info;
my experience with slow KDE has been when /etc/fonts/ contents missconfigured
and also i would check is DMA enabled

[gentoo-user] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.6-r2 build error and locales

2006-01-28 Thread Martins Steinbergs
Hi,

My problem is with flphoto and fluxbox, which doesnt have text in menus, so I
decided it would be nice to add us_gb locales
my make.conf has:
mar martins # cat /etc/make.conf | grep LINGUAS
LINGUAS=lv en

and locales.build now has:
en_US
en_US/ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8/UTF-8
en_GB
en_GB/ISO-8859-1
en_GB.UTF-8/UTF-8
lv_LV
lv_LV/ISO-8859-13
lv_LV.UTF-8/UTF-8

is there all correct?

now when i try rebuild glibc:

mar martins # emerge -pv glibc

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.6-r2 USE=nls userlocales -build -erandom
-glibc-compat20 -glibc-omitfp -hardened -linuxthreads-tls -nptl -nptlonly
-pic -profile 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 k

rebuild ends with error:
