There are some workarounds listed in this bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99564 Basically, downgrading the version of ldap or or changing the ldap configuration seems to fix it for most people. In your case, it is probably this part of localmount that is causing the problem: if [[ -n ${usbfs} ]] \ [[ -e /proc/bus/usb ! -e /proc/bus/usb/devices ]] then ebegin Mounting USB device filesystem (${usbfs}) usbgid=$(echo $(getent group usb) | awk -F: '{print $3}') mount -t ${usbfs} usbfs /proc/bus/usb \ ${usbgid:+-o devmode=0664,devgid=${usbgid}} eend $? Failed to mount USB device filesystem fi This tries to do a lookup of the 'usb' group. If it does indeed turn out to be an ldap issue, add a comment to the linked bug or at least let me know and I'll do it. -Richard -- Linux 2.6.17-gentoo-r1 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ 09:55:18 up 25 min, 1 user, load average: 1.16, 1.00, 1.00 -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

It wasn't on. I tried my basic set of tricks: try and change the screen brightness; try and switch monitors via the key combo on the laptop; close the lid and re-open it; press the key combo to turn the monitor off; press the key combo to go back to sleep mode (didn't work). On Monday 20 February 2006 19:20, Uwe Thiem wrote: Hi folks, this is about Powerpoint Presentations and Gentoo and (almost) any other linux distribution. There are two different types of presentations: *.ppt and *.pps. The difference is that *.pps have an interpreter linked into the document so you can run it under Windows without having Powerpoint. *.ppt do not cause any problems but *.pps do. If you do a file something.pps it reports it as Microsoft Office Document without qualifying what kind of document. As long as you have set all your file associations of Microsoft documents to OpenOffice, it will work for you because OO still is a monolithic application that handles all of them. This is not true if you have set file associations of Microsoft documents to specific applications in any other office suite, including but not limited to koffice. In the case of koffice, kword gets started, It starts to load the presentation and decides correctly that this isn't a word document. So my question is: Aren't there any mime type and/or magic file experts here that can extent the magic file to recognise *.pps files correctly? Would be great if we could get that sorted out. That's amazing, and that's what I am telling my wife as I read (with her) all this messages, and show her how important is that we support Free Software. The need of knowing more, by teaching the newbies. Thanks for all interest of each one who helped. Maarten: If you have no hda, or if hda is the CDrom, it may be prudent to change the cabling so that linux is on the /dev/hda device. Altough it is possible to boot from the slave drive, but it is more straightforward to boot from the master, and you may save yourself some headaches. Yes, I have a CDROM as /dev/hda, and I really thought it would bring me some troubles. Of course I can change it. But, I know (as you also said) it is possible to boot from a slave hard disk. I haven't tested, but it is like a poor solution, for I wouldn't be learning. I honestly am almost considering going back to LILO and try after, but that would not be learning. Holly Bostick: Ummm... isn't there supposed to be a system.map for the kernel as well? Yes, I think. Should I hen modificate grub config file, as in LILO ? if yes, how and where to make this change ? In addition, there is a very good article about the topic system.map in http://www.dirac.org/linux/system.map/. Mostly for debugging. also, the command ps make some use of it. I copied the following: # cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-gentoo-2.6.12-gentoo-r10 PS.: thanks for this valuable €0.02 !!8) -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Problems with GRUB in the installation of Gentoo
Most modern BIOS have the option to boot from a lot of devices, you can check if your BIOS have options to boot from hd1, or primary slave, whatever your BIOS call it, just enter the SETUP and check for it. Yeah, it is already configured to start the first Hard Disk. LILO won't help you, you're installing the boot loader in a slave disk, whatever you do, your BIOS will still call for the master (in most cases), check your grub config twice, change it for the slave drive (hd(1,0)?!) and change your BIOS to boot from the slave... I really haven't checked for it, but i did emerge lilo to have a try at lilo, anyway. After that, I emerge --unmerge grub it. Hope I haven't done something too wrong. Finally, I did: cd /usr/src/linux make install After that, I had the folowing /boot content: # cd /boot # file * System.map: symbolic link to `System.map-2.6.15-gentoo-r1' System.map-2.6.15-gentoo-r1: ASCII text System.map-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old: ASCII text System.map.old: symbolic link to `System.map-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old' boot:symbolic link to `.' boot.0340: x86 boot sector, code offset 0x48 config: symbolic link to `config-2.6.15-gentoo-r1' config-2.6.15-gentoo-r1: ASCII English text config-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old: ASCII English text config-gentoo-2.6.12-gentoo-r10: ASCII English text config.old: symbolic link to `config-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old' grub:directory kernel-gentoo-2.6.12-gentoo-r10: x86 boot sector lost+found: directory map: data vmlinuz: symbolic link to `vmlinuz-2.6.15-gentoo-r1' vmlinuz-2.6.15-gentoo-r1:x86 boot sector vmlinuz-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old:x86 boot sector vmlinuz.old: symbolic link to `vmlinuz-2.6.15-gentoo-r1.old' Now, after rebooting, it really went straight, with text menu. It starts loading really fast the system, but all of a sudden, a Kernel Panic says: Warning - Unable to open an initial console Kernel panic - not suncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel Which init= I should use ? the problem is the lack of a initrd file ? I tried to read mkinitrd man page, but I guess this does not apply. Re: [gentoo-user] Weird USE flag behaviour
Hi list. I have a problem and maybe it is simple to use. But consider I am a Debian renegade, searching for protection under Gentoo Roof ... :) I have the following Disc Configuration: /dev/hda = CDROM /dev/hdb = Hard Disk After hours of pain, I decided to start gentoo all in memory, using gentoo docache string at minimun CD start. After that, all the steps went fine. Following Gentoo handbook, I did the following: /dev/hdb1 - /boot /dev/hdb2 - swap /dev/hdb3 - / During the start of installation, I did as recommended in handbook: /mnt/gentoo - / /mnt/gentoo/boot - /boot Then, kindly selected GRUB, and did this simple /boot/grub.conf file: default 0 timeout 0 splashimage=(dhb0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz title Gentoo Linux 2.6.12.gentoo-r10 root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/2.6.12-gentoo-r10 root=/dev/hdb3 After this, I tried to exec grub-install (hd0) And a message points that /dev/hdb1 doe not have any corresponding BIOS drive. So I did it by GRUB itself. Now, I start the computer, and receive the following messages: GRUB Loading stage1.5 - here I wait several minutes, and the HD is working GRUB loading, please wait - here I wait much more. As I see, I am having troubles with GRUB itself, not Gentoo. Can Somebody show me what could be done ? Thanx Gilberto Martins Brazil -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

This allows you to skip this section entirely. Can somebody please tell me how I move from one data directry to the other. I am not quite sure what that means or how to do it. Thanks.
