That's true.
I've simply used an Ubuntu Live USB to install Gentoo, and everything
went just fine ;)

Re: [gentoo-user] Server standby

2009-09-16 Thread Massimo Gengarelli
AFAIK, waking up from standby is controlled by hardware, you can't
control such events.
As for the WOL (Wake on Lan), you _must_ have an ethernet adapter which
supports it, usually they have a connector that must be linked to the
motherboard. In this way, your ethernet card will be always on and to
wake up your PC you have to send a special packet to the MAC address of
the card.
There are lot of scripts to send such packet, just google it around.

Regards.

LAN request. I try to google for a while and have not found any useful
 information.
 Any suggestion?

 Thanks a lot

[gentoo-user] UXterm and terminus?

2009-09-14 Thread Massimo Gengarelli
Hi everyone.
I'm trying to use uxterm right now, after a while spent on urxvt (which
doesn't behave good on tiled WMs) and I'm quite happy with it, after a
little modding.
Anyway, if I use the terminus font (using the xft library), I can't see
some symbols, like the Euro one (€ ? can you see it? :D), or others..
If I use urxvt (with terminus loaded via xft) everything is fine.

Even manpages sometimes contain crappy symbols.. What can I do?
This is how i compiled it:
[ebuild R ] x11-terms/xterm-243 USE=Xaw3d truetype unicode
-toolbar 0 kB

Re: [gentoo-user] How would I disable Flash (oand other things) for a single account?

2009-09-12 Thread Massimo Gengarelli
Probably it's not the best solution (and it's easily revertable), but
you may try disabling Javascript in Firefox (or whatever browser your
user will use).

Another solution (but I don't think it will work) is to chmod
/opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so to -rwxr-x--- (0750) and then
change it's ownerships to root:video (or another group you may want to
create).

Is it possible to shut off all multimedia stuff for a single account?
It's doesn't have to be securely off, just off, so if it cannot be
done by meddling with group membership then doing something in a root
owned bash file that executes when the user logs in even that's fine
with me. (Uh - even I don't know much about what Linux/Gnome does when
a user logs in so I'll get to learn a bit also!)

I'm currently using ReiserFS (along with 2.6.30-r6 but I've also used
2.6.30-r4) for my boot partition and I'm able to write in it, without
any kind of problem.
Could it be a mountpoint problem?

 could someone here fix this?
