[gentoo-user] ext4 reserved space and defragmentation?
Hi: I want to tune my ext4 filesystem of NAS data partition to free its reserved space by using tune2fs -m0 partition. By reading the manual of tune2fs, I observed the following words: Reserving some number of filesystem blocks for use by privileged processes is done to avoid filesystem fragmentation It means that filesystem defragmentation need such reserved blocks to work properly, am I right? If so, can I make the reserved blocks a little because the default 5% is too much. My NAS filesystem is about 7x1.5T, then 5% means a lot of space. -- Shaochun Wang scw...@ios.ac.cn Jabber: fung...@jabber.org

[gentoo-user] gnupg update problem
Today, I executed the following command to update my system emerge -auDN world What happened is that gnupg seemed to be downgraded to 1.4.7-r1 version. I know gnupg-2.0.7 is stable in the current portage, so I am curious about this downgrade of gnupg. After searching this thread, inspired by the post by Neil Bothwick(Dec 16, 2007), I know that I can use the option --tree to check the dependency. emerge -puDN --tree world The above command reported: 1.) squirrelmail-2.4.10a-r2 requires gnupg-1.4.7-r1 2.) gpgme and so on require gnupg-2.0.7 Neil Bothwick said we could install these two versions of gnupg simultaneously, but in the immediate following post, Nago Toro said No. So I checked the ebuild of gnupg, then I agree with Nago Toro. Searching the gentoo forum( forums.gnetoo.org), I found the following bugzilla post is usefull. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202406 According to this bug report, I know that squirrelmail-1.4.10a-r2 can't work with gnupg version 2. So the ebuild maintainer of squirrelmail set version 1 as a dependency. Analyzing the ebuild of squirrelmail-1.4.10a-r2, I know that the dependency is only requirred by USE flag crypt. So I diable this flag in my local portage config file /etc/portage/package.use. After doing this, I can update my system without getting gnupg back to version 1 now. As a matter of fact, it's impossible to update without doing this change. Even you can afford downgrading gnupg, the other package e.g. gpgme, still requirre you install version 2 of gnupg. [gentoo-user] linux desktop search engines are ugly!
Hi guys: I wouldn't like, but i have to say that all current available linux desktop search engines are rubbish. Keep reading, and you'll know why. 1. Beagle is full of buggy. Can you imagine what makes a software consumes five hundrend Megabits of memory? On my system, this beast consumes almost all of memory and makes my swap half full. Besides, it also monopolizes CPU and makes my system unusable. When you search something, beagle gives you some hints which is not good enough. Beagle can search chm, pdf etc. files. 2. Tracker is boasting itself of consuming little system resource and quick responding speed. It's true when compared with beagle and google desktop search. It consumes about twenty five megabits on idle state and gives you something in an acceptable time. But what can be called a search engine when it returns nothing you want? In other hand, tracker can't index chm file. 3. Google desktop search is heavy like beagle. It makes my system so slow that I wonder whether it is the product of google. It is source closed and only binary distributed. But this is unimportant, and who will be interested in the source of such ugly software :-) In one word, there is no useable desktop search engine for linux. -- Shaochun Wang [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jabber: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] apache can't start after updating expat to 2.0.1
After updating to expat-2.0.1, apache2 couldn't be started. It says that /usr/sbin/apache2 can't find shared library libexpat.so.0. I did some searching on the internet and found that I need do the following: revdep-rebuild -X --library=libexpat.so.0 Unfortunately, doing this doesn't get apache2 running again and the same problem still exits. Observing the output of the above command, I notice /usr/lib64/libaprutil-0.so.0.9.12 is broken. This file belongs to apr-util. By executing 'eix apr-util', I find that there are two versions of apr-util installed in my computer. After re-emergeing the apr-util-0.9.12-r1, apache2 started normally. So I think that the problem is accually caused by the -X option of revdep-rebuild command, which emerges the best (currrently is the latest stable) packages available. In this apr-util case, it will emerge apr-util-1.2.8. So for slotted packages, don't use -X option for revdep-rebuild command. [gentoo-user] suspend2 with lvm
Hi Everyone: I use suspend2 and lvm at the same time. I use a lvm partition (/dev/vg/swap) as my suspend target by setting resume2=swap:/dev/vg/swap. I order to use make it work, I use initramfs. It works properly except that I get the following message when I shut down the computer: Unable to shutdown: /dev/vg/swap After some analyzing, I know it happens because the open count of /dev/vg/swap is 2 when the script /lib/rcscripts/addons/lvm-stop.sh is executed. [gentoo-user] fujistu s2110 amd64 problem
Yesterday evening, I installed gentoo on a new fujistu s2100 laptop. It's an amd64 one. I have a wierd problem: the network speed is very slow and it comes up and dow frequently. So transfering files in my home netword is very time consuming. Specially, the connection speed is about 50 kps or so. I used genkernel all to compile the kernel, and the kernel version is 2.6.15. I noticed that the ethernet driver is b44. This notebook has a wireless netcard too, so the ethernet interface I used for my connection is eth1.
