[gentoo-user] Xen Kernel Reboots DomU Fails xseries 346

2017-08-29 Thread symack
Hello Everyone,

Just installed new version of xen on latest gentoo on an IBM xseries 346
(older machine), and it keeps rebooting when trying to load the xen kernel.
I really don't know how to debug this and would really appreciate your help.

Kind Regards,

Mike.

Hello Everyone,

I did try that as well however when I do a grub install I am getting:

 grub-install /dev/sda
Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: warning: disk does not exist, so falling back to partition
device /dev/sda2.
grub-install: warning: disk does not exist, so falling back to partition

grub-install: warning: disk does not exist, so falling back to partition

/boot ls -la lists:

I am really not sure why we are getting the error. I can write to the
partition just fine as you can see.

Kind Regards,

Mike

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I have changed the CFLAGS to look like the
following:

CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -march=native"

Anything I do within chroot is returning `Illegal State` and made the
change from the livecd
environment.

Currently I am rebuilding the whole system using `emerge -e world` and
everything is failing as early as the unpack phase.
Do I have to download stage from the beginning for the 3rd time!

Any help to recover this instance is greatly appreciated.

[gentoo-user] Illegal State in Chroot Environment

2017-08-06 Thread symack
Hello Everyone, I was able to get as far as installing grub however through
the installation I would find some strange behaviour such as not being able
to mount /dev/sda2 to the boot directory. I would do it on the livecd (ie,
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot).

When it came to installing `grub grub-install /dev/sda` I got an 'Illegal
State'. emerge -e world would fail with:

There must be an easy way to do this. Something like download the latest
portage and source package. Untar on live system and rebuild!
That would be so amazing if possible.

[gentoo-user] Updating an old version of Gentoo

2017-07-27 Thread symack
Hello Everyone,

I usually dive right into these things however I do not have a lot of
experience with Gentoo and currently facing this task.

Is there a safe and conservative way to upgrade this live system minimizing
downtime as much as possible.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Nick.

[gentoo-user] idmapd nfs4 and ldap pleasantries :)

2015-10-08 Thread symack
Hello Everybody!

So decided to adopt nfs4 + rpc + ldap since most of the posts regarding
bugs I have seen range between 2012-2015, so silly me, safe to come out
right? wrong.

Cient ldap user:

# id user1
uid=1004(user1) gid=1005(user1) groups=27(sudo),1005(user1)

Server ldap user:
# id user1
uid=1004(user1) gid=1005(user1) groups=27(sudo),1005(user1)

As you can see `nslcd and nscd` are doing their job on the client side. I
can log in, mount etc..
all fine. Except the infamous `everything has permission nobody nogroup`

A few notes:

* The `Domain` attribute is set to the same host in idmapd.conf for both
client and server
* If I set  Nobody-User = user1 Nobody-Group = user1 everything works as
expected but this was just a test.
* If I try to adduser user1 on the client I get an error as expected...
User exists therefore, users and groups are sync'ed as per ldap and nss...

Question

Can rpc.idmap translate ldap users over nsswitch? When I try to use
`umich_ldap` as the translator idmapd does not start with `umich_ldap` does
not exist...

How can I fix this please? :)

Kind Regards,

M

The machine is still rebooting when booting in the Xen built kernel. I know
these machines have a thing
called VRM (Voltage Regulator Module). This module is needed for dual cpu
configurations. The machine
has only on CPU and so no VRM. I read somewhere there was a issue with VRM
equipped machine.

Your help is greatly appreciate as I am stumped over this.

Hello Hydra,

I'm totally new to Xen and was following this tutorial very compressed
tutorial https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xen
I purchased the machine as the test machine to see how stable/secure I can
get Xen doms to run on it.

Should I change the profile and reinstall xen/xen-tools

Hello Hydra,

Thank you so much. I was literally about to use the default profile and
reinstall the same
versions. If I need to go back in time, which version is considered Stable
and not too old
for xen and xen-tools. Finally, as I am new to gentoo, can you please tell
me how to emerge
an older xen version.

Thanks for Everything!

[gentoo-user] xen on new install reboots by itself

2015-03-30 Thread symack
Hello Everyone,

New install, on a old server with raid 10 scsi... The normal installation
works fine,
the only thing is when we try to boot with xen, it gets to the prompt and
then reboots
by itself. The following message is what differs between normal gentoo and
xen kernel

Mar 31 06:32:18 test kernel: [0.138644] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND,
While evaluating Sleep State [\_S1_] (20140724/hwxface-580)
Mar 31 06:32:18 test kernel: [0.138961] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND,

Mar 31 06:32:18 test kernel: [0.139267] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND,
While evaluating Sleep State [\_S3_] (20140724/hwxface-580)

I'm never sure how to debug such errors. Some googling suggested adding
ACPI flags (ie, force, on, off), when I do that, the system just reboots
without getting to the login prompt.

The server is an X346 with hardward servraid 7K with raid 10.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: [gentoo-user][SOLVED] Computer does not boot

2015-01-31 Thread symack
It sounded like a grub - grub2 issue. After running grub-install you
probably fixed a broken fs referece ie / /boot etc...
Fresh gentoo installs with manual kernel builds always feel like a warm
sweater that just came out of the drier. Ah so clean :)

Re: [gentoo-user] Updating Gentoo

2015-01-30 Thread symack
Neil Thank you! Actually I have an issue where trying to emerge world. This
is the following
message:

(dev-lang/python-exec-2.0.1:2/2::gentoo, installed) pulled in by

dev-lang/python-exec:2[python_targets_jython2_5(-),python_targets_jython2_7(-),python_targets_python3_2(-),python_targets_python3_3(-),python_targets_python2_6(-),python_targets_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_jython2_5(-),-python_single_target_jython2_7(-),-python_single_target_pypy2_0(-),-python_single_target_python3_2(-),-python_single_target_python3_3(-),-python_single_target_python2_6(-),-python_single_target_python2_7(-)]
required by (dev-python/python-exec-1.2:2/2::gentoo, installed)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook

Is it safe to uninstall python-exec?

Re: [gentoo-user] Updating Gentoo

DON'T unmerge python, remember emerge runs on python, you will likely
be unable to use the package manager if you do that

I did this mistake a long long time ago... Been there dones that

Good news:

emerge -C dev-python/python-exec emerge dev-python/python-exec (fixed
the issue)
glibc updated (not vulnerable)
python update

revdep-rebuild, and restarted all the service everything seems ok. Not
going to play around
with no udev or grub2. My weekend starts now and refuse to get it off on
the wrong foot!

Don't bother upgrading/migrating. If your current boot loader meets
your needs, there is no reason to switch to grub2.
