 Nope.

They haven't, and I'm stumped too. Thanks for the idea though.

Well, what do you know? My arrow buttons have just come back. The only
relevant thing I've emerged today is x11-libs/gtk+-2.22.1-r1. I think
that's where I smell a rat.

It hasn't helped with my KDM problem though.

Just a crazy «back to basics» idea:
Did you try to use the configuration dialog for the Menu
bar / Navigation toolbar / Bookmarks toolbar? If not, please
right mouse click on the «STOP» button, and choose
«Customize...»).
This opens the «Customize Toolbar» window for the toolbars,
and you can drag and drop the items from this window to the
toolbars.
Do you see the Back- and Forward arrows inside the
«Customize Toolbar» Window? If yes, then just drag-drop them
where you like them.
Or use the «Restore default set» button.
If the arrows do not appear, I am without any more ideas.

Urs

Probably an issue with your desktop theme. Try to switch it and maybe
 log-out/log-in.

These buttons are not part of a desktop theme afaik.
Try to install a different firefox theme from https://addons.mozilla.org .

I'm not aware of having a desktop theme. I certainly haven't changed
 anything in that department.

I may have to resort to deleting my user and creating another one. That
is going to be one large pain.

Before you do this, why don't you verify that is has to do with your
user account, first?

1. Create a new user account and check how Firefox looks in that account.

2. Move your Firefox profile (~/.mozilla/firefox) to some other location
and check how Firefox looks then.

Yes, I did intend to go step-wise. In fact I had the same absence of
arrows in both those cases, so it's a feature of Firefox rather than my
config.

Just rename it to .old then let it create a new one. If it works, then
you know where to start. If it doesn't, delete the one it just created
and remove the .old and try something else.
