The result was a box which wouldn't boot I take it the prelink in Gentoo is not broken.

I've always wondered this too, so I decided to test it: * Put prelink in my FEATURES in make.conf [...] So it appears that it *is* running it on its own. But the docs I quotes say You do not need to set FEATURES=prelink in your make.conf.
