I got it to load the mpv file but Celluloid still doesn't do what I
want.  I might add, I have yet to figure out how to set such things in
the config file either.  It seems there is no such option to put in the
file.  Since it doesn't seem to be capable of doing some fairly simple
things, I moved on.  I found QMPlay2 and it works fine except that it
doesn't close at the end of the video.  It just shows the little icon
thing and sits there.  So far, that's the only thing I haven't found a
workaround/setting/config for.  I've got everything else to work like it
should.  Dang near a drop in replacement for Gnome-player.

At this point, it seems QMPlay2 is going to be used for a while.  There
are others that I like better as far as looks go but they just don't
work the way I want and seem to lack the ability to do so.  May give
them a try later on.  I wish Celluloid worked but it seems it just isn't
there yet.

Thanks.

You can specify an mpv.conf file to use in the settings of celluloid.
Preferences -> Config files -> Load MPV configuration file

See https://github.com/celluloid-player/celluloid#configuration

MPV settings like fullscreen, geometry, autofit, force-window should
work if you set them in the corresponding config.

It used to be called gnome-mpv... but was renamed to celluloid some time
ago.

I been using celluloid a fair amount.  So far, it is the closest to
gnome player after a little tweaking here and there.  A couple things
tho.  I like it to start in a specific window size.  I like it as big as
I can but not cover up my Kmix volume controls.  I have Kmix set to a
specific spot, right side, and then I adjust my video player to take up
the rest of the screen.  I then tell KDE to always use those settings by
right clicking the top bat and setting application settings.  Celluloid
doesn't have the normal bar at the top of the window tho.  I can't right
click on it and tell it to use specific settings.  I suspect this is
made for something other than KDE.  My other thing, I can't see the
close button in the upper right.  It closes when I blindly click it but
it's not visible. I feel like a blind squirrel looking for a acorn.

If you don't *need* any fancy interface, you can't go wrong with mpv.
It is a fork of mplayer, has space to pause, arrow keys to move
back/forward a minute (up/down) or 10 sec (left/right). I've never
needed anything else.

The only downside to mpv is they've removed lirc support quite a long
time ago; if you use custom lirc/irexec to control HTPCs or the like
like I do it's a bit of a deal-breaker.

I'm installing the first one now.  The second is what I'm trying to
figure out the config for. I got it pretty close but still got a couple
things that annoy me.

I may end up using mpv for my TV and going back to using smplayer as my
normal player for short videos I watch on the puter monitor.  It's a
option.

I'm using the mpv GUI now.  That's what I'm trying to change.  Some
things I was able to change with the config file you pointed too.  The
ones I mentioned above, I can't figure out how to change those.

I found one in the list I haven't checked into.  Some aren't in the tree

Found and adjusted some things.  A couple things I still can't find
tho.  When I skip forward or backward, it shows a bar graph thing like
it does at the bottom that shows the time in the video.  If I move
forward for example, it shows and fills in more of the little bar graph
thing.  It's about 1/3rd of the way up the video.  I don't need that
part.  Maybe the name of that setting is what I'm missing??

Also, I'd like the part at the bottom to show all the time.  As it is
now, it only shows if I put the mouse in the video area and move it.
Once I stop moving the mouse, it disappears. Maybe this is not doable?
I found this but not quite sure if this is the right thing for either of
those or I'm setting it wrong.

# O no-osd cycle-values osd-level 3 1    # cycle through OSD mode

In a way, I wish it had the normal File, Edit etc menu like most other
apps but then again, it does look nice.  Still, a preferences menu in
the GUI would be nifty.  I might add tho, smplayer seems to have done
away with the menu bar at the top too.  It still has the menu bar and
preferences in a GUI tho, right click brings it up.

I also found QMplay2 as well.  It doesn't seem to have a way to change
some settings at all.  I found the settings/config/preferences section
but nothing about mouse and such.  So far, it isn't to high on my list.

I'd like to change however, it works like you said tho which is a great

[gentoo-user] Gnome mplayer replacement

2020-11-16 Thread Dale
Howdy,

Gnome mplayer left the tree a good long while back.  It hasn't been
maintained but I kept it installed with a overlay and until recently, it
has worked well.  While I like smplayer the most, I use it just for
watching TV.  I have it set to play on screen 1 which is my TV and to
start in full screen etc etc etc.  So, when I want to watch something
short on my puter monitor, I been using gnome player for that.  Space
bar pauses, arrow keys skip forward etc etc.  For some basic needs, it
works pretty well.  Since it is no longer maintained tho, I've noticed
it being unable to play some video formats.  I've noticed this with .mkv
the most but even a few .mp4 videos as well.  Usually, it just crashes.
I've tried some other players but either the shortcuts aren't set to
work the same or there doesn't seem to even be a menu so I can change
settings.  This is what I've tried so far.

kmediaplayer
baka-mplayer
gnome-mplayer
kmplayer
vlc

Each has its own things I either like or don't like or just can not
figure out a way to set it properly.  One of those, I can't find a menu
for preferences no matter what I click.  I like the look but I want to
change what does what.  I don't need anything super fancy, like smplayer
which has quite a lot of features, but I do need the basics.  Space to
pause, arrow to go forward or backward.  It seems a few has one but not
the other.  One of those always shows a playlist even tho I have
repeatedly set it to disabled.  Each time I open a video, there is that
list on the right side.  :-@

If someone remembers the old Gnome player, what replaced it or better
yet, what can I use to replace it with the same keyboard settings?
Maybe there is something I haven't heard about and google wants to hide
from me.

Thanks for any tips.

Dale
