Re: [gentoo-user] IMAP server recommendations.

 Hey gang...

I was just looking for some opinions. I am replacing my current mail server.

Right now I am using courier-imap and I am happy with it. The only thing
that concerns me is that I have heard grumblings that courier has some
security issues. I was just curious which IMAP server other people would
recommend or perhaps if I am best off just sticking with what I know. My
current setup is very simple. My only real requirements are SSL and maildir
support. I connect using either Kmail or Thunderbird.

 Thanks,
 Josh

Another dovecot suggestion here. Used by a few hundred users (all
kinds of clients on all kinds of OS's) for about a year; flawless
operation. (And it recently even reached the 1.0 version! Yay!:) )

I switched from courier-imap to dovecot some time ago and haven't
regretted it. ;)

Be lucky,

I moved from Courier-imap to Cyrus following performance problems with
larger folders and haven't regretted it since.

Connecting to any imap (or imaps)-server should be simple as long as the
client supports imap (or imaps)

Hm, it's not exactly maildir, though. It's kind of a derivate... But I
agree: Cyrus is really capable. The newer versions of dovecot are
rock-solid, so if it already fits the needs, I would go with dovecot.
However, Cyrus has some really nice features, e.g. global folders,
fully implemented ACLs, Sieve mail filters, numerous authentication
methods... It really depends on what you're trying to offer. I was very
happy w/ Cyrus, running a mail server for a work group of ~40 people.
On another setup, running a mail server for a bunch of friends who
don't need much of such functionality, Dovecot serves just fine. It's
really much more lightweight.

We recently switched from courier-imap to dovecot (imaps only maildir
support with Thunderbird and squirrelmail as mail clients). Peak load
went from 10-12 to about 1 and response is much better especially on big
folders. If your server is not heavily used, I suggest that you stick
with what you know. Otherwise, you can give dovecot a try.
