[gentoo-user] Not even a sound of silence...(longish)

2006-09-11 Thread Meino Christian Cramer
Hi,

recently I did a emerge -e system; emerge -e world.

Apart from some applications, which dont want to compile with
the new system -- now based on gcc-4.1.1 -- everything works fine.

(Before emergeing I did a full image backup of the old system on
another harddisk of the same model (dd ...). )

But I have no sound anymore...

 I checked for the follwing:
 PC-BIOS: Onboard sound is enabled.
diffing old and new etc: Inserting alsa devices again with
 /etc/modules.d/alsa
Volume is up (alsamixer and speakers)
Speakers have power and ready to play.
Plug is connected to the correct outlet (weong word?...sorry I am
only german...)

Hmm, can you post the output of amixer scontents.

And 2 more questions: what version of alsa-lib do you have (emerge -pv
alsa-lib), and are you using the in-kernel drivers or the alsa-drivers
package? If alsa-drivers, what version?

Apologies, apologies, apologies! I am down on my knees :)

I found the problem: Volume was up but the PCM channel was
 *MUTED* !

 Thanks a lot anyway!
 Keep hacking!

That is VERY common. I do wish they would put that at half way or
something. At least we would get a whisper from it then.
