Right after I sent this I looked at kdmrc. Now I can login to my lab-rat
as root.

do you mean you cant use the root login name or that there is no icon for root 
in kdm? you should be able to type root in the username box and passswd as 
per normal. Why you would really want to escapes me right now tho, cause all 
the important stuff can be done with control center or konsole using su. just 
my 2c.

Edit /usr/KDE/3.4/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. Change allowrootlogin to true
