Actually, this is because the nvidia driver officially doesn't support xorg-server 1.1, only 1.0 (1.1 is xorg 7.1, 1.0 is xorg 7.0) Many people (myself included) find that it mostly works - some minor problems with bitmaps fonts in my experience. Unfortunately, if you've already installed xorg 7.1, it's really hard to downgrade. There is a bug with xorg 7.1 nvidia drivers [http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=130292] If you have xorg 7.1 already, you must downgrade ..
