 xfce4-mixer works great but the levels always reset after a reboot. I
 need a way to set them permanently.

# emerge aumix rc-update add aumix default

Is aumix an alternative to alsasound? Would it be alright to remove
alsa-utils after emerging aumix?

Set the levels using alsamixer and then save it by using alsactl store.

Frankly, I didn't find good audio player that works good with alsa, so
I decided to use oss emulation (I don't use alsa-utils; I think this
package isn't required)

Ok, I emerged alsa-utils and added alsasound to the boot runlevel.
Running alsaconf tells me it can't find a sound card though, and now
all the levels start at zero.

ALSA is compiled into my kernel and has always worked great.

What's wrong with using xfce4-mixer for that? I do that myself and it
works absolutely flawlessly.
