It must default to us then? - Grant As far as I am informed the keymaps init script sets the console keymap to the value of the KEYMAP variable. To change it in X too, use Option XkbLayout es in xorg.conf, or set it with 'setxkbmap es' from the commandline. Or set it using the KDE or Gnome Control Center.
