[gentoo-user] About dig command and others

2006-09-24 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi folks,

Gentoo_amd64

My ISP tried to block their unwellcome sites on the proxy server, I suppose,
disallowing their subscribers visiting them. The blocked sites can be visited
locally or abroad without problem via other ISPs OR via www.proxydom.com by me.
 I tried to verify my suspicion with;

Re: [gentoo-user] recompiing kernel quesiton

2006-09-25 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Pawel Kraszewski,

Tks for your advice.

 First of all - you may try the installation CD of Gentoo - boot it and
 give 'halt -p' at command prompt. If it switches off, that means error in
 your config. If it doesn't, this might be the hardware fault.

I made following 2 tests
1)
Booted Gentoo install-amd64-minimal-2006-1
Ran
# shutdown -h now (also tried poweroff)

System halted but not poweroff

2)
Booted Knoppix 5
Ran
# shutdown -h now

System halted and poweroff immediately.

I think it is the problem of Gentoo not hardware.

 Put some light and describe your hardware. Especially - which motherboard

[gentoo-user] pppoe-start problem

eth0  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:13:D4:FE:DA:87 disappeared

Internet can't be browsed.  I have to run;

# pppoe-stop

then ran again;
# pppoe-start
at least 4 trials before ISP can be connected.

# ifconfig
this time showing 3 sections
eth0  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:13:D4:FE:DA:87

Please advise how to fix this problem. TIA

Furthermore it comes to my notice that recently browsing Internet is rather

Re: [gentoo-user] About dig command and others

2006-09-26 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Boyd,

  Is there another method to check/verify my suspicion. TIA

 Based on the original post, it sounds to me like your ISP is (intentionally
 or not) blocking that site. There's very little (probably nothing) you
 could do to prove they are doing it intentionally.

Actually I'm not interested on the site being blocked which is/was censored to
a blank page. It was because of an article against the owner of my ISP. This
owner owns 2 ISPs. All their subcribers can't browse the blocked site. This
happening went to public on newspapers. Some subscribers made complaint to the
authority concerned.

 What you've already
 done (tried via other ISPs and a proxy service) already proves the site is
 blocked

I can browse the site via proxydom.com without problem. On my search
installing foxyproxy, the addon, on Firefox can browse the site. I'm running
SeaMonkey on this Gentoo box. I'm now learning how to make foxyproxy to work
on SeaMonkey.

My sole interest is to learn accumulating my IT knowhow. How to prove this
malpractice is done by my ISP.

 (although, I suppose it could be the site blocking your ISP and
 not vice-versa).
The owner of the site also made complaint to the telecommunication authority
here.

Others noted with tks.

Re: [gentoo-user] pppoe-start problem

2006-09-26 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Boyd,

Tks for your advice.

 I thought the new baselayout handled
 pppoe (and other ppp connections) just like normal connections:
 1. Configure in /etc/conf.d/net

/etc/conf.d/net is a file

# cat /etc/conf.d/net
config_eth0=( 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 brd 192.168.0.255 )
routes_eth0=( default gw 192.168.0.1 )
config_eth0=( dhcp )

 2. Symlink net.$IFACE to net.lo
net.lo is on /etc/init.d/

What is net.$IFACE?  Tks.

B.R.
SL

3. Start/Stop/Query via /etc/init.d/net.$IFACE

I could be thinking about testing (since I run ~amd64) and this may not
apply to stable, but have a look at /etc/conf.d/net.example and make sure
your configuration is correct.

If you think it is correct, please provide the output of:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
and
grep -Ev '^[[:space:]]*(#|$)' /etc/conf.d/net

Hi Iain,

Oh Sorry misunderstood your question

Brand - Nil

There are dozens of these devices in the market. I just selected an economic
one.

 AFAIK this seems to be OK. There were problems with various versions of
 udev, gvm, but you seem to have avoided those...

 Read here for some more info if you're feeling adventurous:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107784

Noted with tks.

OK just for curiosity. I found automount worked on this USB enclose when
installed on FC5_64 on this PC (on another HD) and also on FC5_32 on another
PC, both with icons displayed on gnome desktop.

 Of course! well spotted Andrew! you need to start gvm - run
 `gnome-volume-manager ` from a terminal, then logout and back in again,
 and see if it works.

Yes, it worked, no icons on gnome desktop.

$ ls -al /media/disk
$ ls -al /media/disk-l
showed 2 partitions of the USB enclosure.

 After that, you could try the preferences for gvm, (in preferences
 removable drives and media) and make sure automounting and such is
 checked.

On console

Hi Iain,

 Yes, it worked, no icons on gnome desktop.

 $ ls -al /media/disk
 $ ls -al /media/disk-l
 showed 2 partitions of the USB enclosure.

 # gnome-volume-propertie
 ...
 Mount removable drives when hot-plugged

 OK, we're getting somewhere!!

Something strange happened here. After serveral boots the trick did not work
any more.

Login as user

# `gnome-volume-manager `
(gnome-volume-manager:6102): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session
manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.
* end *

However
# ls /media
disk

still showing one mount point of the partitions (the HD on USB enclosure has 2
partitions, both on ext3). Another disk-1 disappeared. But it has not
mounted.  I have to run;
# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/disk

I haven't figured out the cause. I made several tests with the same result.

 I used to have this issue (drives would mount, but not show up on the
 desktop). I fixed it by upgrading.

 Have you considered gnome 2.14?

I'm running gnome-light of version 2.14.2. I'm prepared to install the full
gnome.  But I haven't figured out whether just run;

# emerge -av gnome

OR

# emerge --unmerge gnome-light emerge gnome

I have installed some packages on gnome-light

 Did you try the gconf key:
 gconftool-2 --type bool --set /system/storage/display_internal_hard_drives
 true

No.

 How did your versions of software compare with those listed in comment
 #68 in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107784 ?

I read this thread before on sorting out the problem of the mobo (ASUS A8N-VM)
on this Gentoo box. The mouse pointer always hangs if without adding noapic
on the line on grub.conf booting the kernel

I also came across another thread;
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=57791page=6

At this juncture I can't ascertain whether my problems encountered coming from
the software or the mobo.

Tks.

[gentoo-user] File replication

2006-08-25 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi folks,

I'm prepared using an USB enclosure for data stroage.

I'm searching a tool/method whenever I save a file on /home/user a
duplicate copy will be saved automatically on

Re: [gentoo-user] File replication

2006-08-27 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Bryan,

Tks for your advice.

 Why not just use rsync?

 setup cron to just sync the two directories (/home/blah with
 /mnt/disk/blah) over and over?

Such an arrangement will only sync /home/user on
/mnt/usb_enclosure/user at fixed time, periodically, not instaneously
whenever there is a change on /home/user

 Or just set your hom directory to /mnt/disk/user ?

I intend using the USB device for dual purpose.

1) as mirror of /home/user. So when there is a problem there is a
second copy of data on the USB enclosure.

2) using it as mobile storge device which can be plugged in on any
Linux PC when I work on the latter.

Re: [gentoo-user] File replication

2006-08-27 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Neil,

 Do you really need such frequent syncing? Bear in mind the limited
 write
 lifespan of flash memory, if you have a file in your home directory
 that
 is frequently updated, you could wear out the memory in a short time.
 what's wrong with using a script that syncs your hard disk with the
 flash drive before unmounting it?

Mounted inside the USB enclosure is a HD. I'll use old HD for this
purpose. Frequently I work on at least 2 PCs running different Linux
OS. With such a device, USB enclosure, it'll ease my work on
consolidating the working data on 2 PCs. Otherwise I have to use a
pendrive for tranporting working data between 2 PCs. OR compressing
them as tarball and send the latter as attachment to an email.

Re: [gentoo-user] File replication

Hi Etaoin,

Tks for your advice.

 If you have networking, why not set up a network share of some kind
 (nfs,
 smb, or even ssh via shfs) and mount it (under the same path) from
 each
 computer you work on? This avoid having to replicate data and, with
 decent network speed, is nearly as fast as disk I/O.

The PCs, a workstation only, are not connected to network. Neither
I'll run 2/3 PCs simultaneously.

Previously I did it in this way making use of an addtional network card
connecting 2 PCs. Later I ceased using this method because another PC
was standing idly.

Re: [gentoo-user] File replication

2006-08-27 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Neil,

 but I still don't
 see
 why you need real-time mirroring. A script to sync the drive before
 unmounting would give you an accurate mirror. A cron script to check
 if
 the drive is mounted and sync it every hour would cut down on the
 amount
 of data to sync when unmounting.

If running sync periodically on poweroff the PC there will be some
files not yet updated.

I think there may be an existing tool for this purpose. I believe
seeing similar tool for M$Windows previously.

 Not very sure that's what you want, but check: sys-cluster/drbd.

sync+cron can do the job, incremental-copying files from /home/user on

Hi Jarry and folks,

Tks for your advice.

Booting with a LiveCD:
My problem booting with Knoppix5 is it does not support LVM, vgscan,
vgchange, etc. not available. I can only boot with Gentoo
install-amd64-minimal-2006.0

After activating lv, mounting all devices, etc., coming to;
# mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
# mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
# env-update
-/bin/bash:env-update:command not found.

It did happen in my previous rounds. Other command such as emerge
also found missing compelling me to wipe out the HD and to start again.
 Any suggestion.  TIA

Another problem I forgot to mention in my previous posting is;
/lib/modules
was missing

# ls -al /lib | grep modules
did not find it.

Problem about switching consoles. After chroot I can't read online
manual. Therefore I have to press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+F2 switching to another
console. (I suppose the working console is [Ctrl]+[Alt]+F4). But
after switching back to the working console all the work disappeared.
It did happen occassionally but not always. Any advice? TIA.

 You need to chroot to /mnt/gentoo before running etc-update:

Yes I did. Sorry for not listing them on my previous posting. Steps
taken previously as follows;

# cd /mnt/gentoo

# mount -o bind /dev/mnt/gentoo/dev
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# env-update

other commands also not found.

If I start again wiping out the complete HD, following the steps on the
handbook.  Then it worked seamlessly.

# env-update
 Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache

I can't resolve if after exiting chroot and re-enter chroot, commands
will disappear. I tried many times in my previous rounds.

 I think you've gotten confused by which console you are working on.
 Normally the live CD starts several consoles (6?), that are
 accessible
 on Alt+F1 through Alt+F6. (The Ctrl+Alt combination is only needed
 when switching from X to a console). So most likely, you were
 working
 on tty1 (Alt+F1).

I'm sure on my previous rounds, [Ctrl+Alt+F4] switching back to the
working console. Sometimes all work were there. Another time they
were lost.

I'll try your advice Alt+F1 next time. Tks

 Well, this is why you cannot boot. You do not have a kernel image in
 /boot.

 Are you actually _following_ the guide that you posted a link to
 originally, because you seem to have missed[1]:

 When the kernel has finished compiling, copy the kernel image to
 /boot. Use whatever name you feel is appropriate for your kernel
 choice and remember it as you will need it later on when you
 configure
 your bootloader. Remember to replace kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r5 with the
 name and version of your kernel.

 # cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r5

  It looks to me quite funny. It seems continue endlessly. boot was

I completed all steps listed there at least in 2 rounds.  I found;
# ls -l /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx1 root   root12 Oct 13 11:04 /usr/src/linux -
linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r7

there. But now it disppears. I don't know why?. Even I can't find
the directory src after chroot. Another directory I failed to find
was modules.  I ran;

# find / -name src -type d
and
# find / -name modules -type d
Both no printout

and could not find it. Beside the command env-update, emerge, etc.
were not found on bash.

I think I have to run another round again wiping out the complete HD.

Another thing, what did you mean ...Use whatever name you feel is
appropriate for your kernel choice and remember it as you will need it
later on when you configure your bootloader. Remember to replace
kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r5 with the name and version of your kernel.

I used kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r7 previously.

 Do you follow the installation guide from gentoo.org?

There are several documents on Gentoo website. I followed 2 documents:

Partitioning HD with LVM
Gentoo LVM2 installation
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml

Installation
Gentoo Linux AMD64 Handbook

 I mean, do you use a
 standard scheme?

I made some adjustment for my case. I did not emerge LVM2.

If fail again. I'll run a final test according their HD config (w/o
slave), not running LVM.

Maybe

GnuCash

I found it 2 years ago but not having experienced it. I think there
maybe some new software created in these 2 years.  Please check;

Hi Dirk,

  Your previous mail stated that you did not emerge lvm2.
  However, /dev/vg/usr IS a logical volume so it will never work
  until you install the lvm2 software.

 He has EVMS installed, he doesn't need lvm2 tools.

My problem is LV not being activated on booting so all devices such
/dev/vg/usr, home, opt, etc. can't not been mounted. At time of
installation ;
# vgchange -a y
must be run to activate LV.

I'm now looking around where (/rc.d/ ?) I have to add this command.

I tried creating /tmp/newroot, /tmp/newroot/mnt, etc.in anticipating
mounting LV. But found it did not work.

Actually Gentoo started but the above devices unable to mount making
some files can't be found. Other problem are of minor matters.

In the past I have been playing around on FC5 and Ubuntu 6.06
partitioning HD with LVM on command lines but never work. I was
compelled using GUI to get it done. Then it worked without problem. I
don't know its reason.

 There is no LVM2 module.

Sorry, it's on the book:

Code Listing 2.1: Loading the LVM2 module
# modprobe dm-mod

 Are you using both lvm2 tools _and_ EVMS? Then it is clear that the

I haven't installed LVM2 intentionally.  Neither I selected LVM2 module

 You may have it compiled i the kernel rather than as a module. It
 makes
 little sense to use a module when you need it all the time.

I'll try to recompile the kernel on Gentoo itself. But I don't know
whether it works because some devices/partitions not mounted.

 What does zgrep BLK_DEV_DM /proc/config.gz show?

How to set it? By recompiling the kernel?

 vgchange is present on the live CD, but not on your system.

Gentoo started w/o error/complaint after emerge lvm2

I found out the cause why after chroot some commands not found.
Because after chroot /dev/vg/usr, /dev/vg/home, etc. were not mounted
disregarding having be mounted at the begining before chroot. I
further discovered the cause of the later because I did not repeat the
step to edit /etc/lvm/lvm.conf as written on
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/lvm2.xml;. Athough at the beginning before
chroot vg and lv can be activated with all devices mounted which gave
me a wrong concept considering this step being not necessary on
exit/re-enter chroot. But after chroot all devices were umounted.

Installing X Window server went through w/o problem by following the
doc:- http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml;

Further problem came on installing Gnome. I'll start another topic

[gentoo-user] Problem on installing Gnome (gnome-light)

Hi folks,

I followed The GNOME Configuration HOWTO

installing Gnome. Steps writen there went though w/o problem until
upto;
Code Listing 2.7: Adding hald and avahi-dnsconfd to the default

On running;
# /etc/init.d/hald start

I failed to find hald but hald.sh instead. I considered they were
the same sh-script and hit [ENTER]. Following was displayed on the
screen;
Shunting down the Logical Volume Manager
Shunting down Logical Volume : /dev/vg/usr
Shunting down Logical Volume : /dev/vg/home
Shunting down Logical Volume : /dev/vg/opt
Shunting down Logical Volume : /dev/vg/var

Shunting down Volume Group : vg ...
Finished Shutting down the Logical Volume Manager
Remounting remaining file systems readonly
* End *

Then my nightmare came again. Some commands can't be found.

Continued
# rc-update add hald default

# rc-update add hald.sh default
... file not found

Then I ran
# vgchange -a y
 something locked (sorry I can't recall exactly)

I can't proceed further and ran;
# shutdown -r now
text scrolling started ending at - blinking.

Pressed reset to restart Gentoo. On booting there was no
error/complaint displayed. Gentoo started with login prompted up
properly.

Login

X window started.

Please advise;
1)
Do I need to reinstall Gnome?

If YES how to remove Gnome, the unfinished package?

2)

Re: [gentoo-user] Problem on installing Gnome (gnome-light) (gnome-light started)

2006-09-12 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Bo,

Tke for your advice.

 To get equery you need to emerge app-portage/gentoolkit.

 # emerge app-portage/gentoolkit.

# emerge app-portage/gentoolkit

# equery check gnome-base/gnome-session
gnome-session not found

# equery check gdm
gdm not found

# emerge gnome-session
and manually upgraded 16 conf files.

# emerge gdm
and manually upgraded 14 conf files.

# /etc/init.d/xdm stop  /etc/init.d/xdm start

# nano /etc/rc.conf
un-commented DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm
and changed xdm to gdm

rebooted PC. Display manager started with login page displayed.

Login as root

Gnome-light started with its logo displaying a while and faded out with
following warning:-
- There was an error starting Gnome Settings Daemon
- Something such as themes, sounds, or background setting
  may not work correct
- The Setting Daemon restarted too many times
- The last error message was
  There was an unknown activation error
  Gnome will still try to restort the Settings Daemon next
  time your login
* * * END * * *

Evoked Xterm window
# shutdown -r now

Gnome-light started and died as previously.

Before I was not aware gnome-session not coming with gnome-light and
gdm not installed.

Re: [gentoo-user] Problem on installing Gnome (gnome-light) (SOLVED with gnome-light running)

2006-09-12 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Bo,

Further to my late posting, I have Gnome-light up running with further
2 steps:-

- ran revdep-rebuild
- ran emerge gnome-light
- update conf files
- rebooted PC
- login as user
- gnome-light 2.14 started
  (a warning popup:
   The panel encountered a problem while
   loading OAFHD:GBOME_Miexer Applet
   Delete)
   Deleted the file

Checking /var/log/messages, found following problems

1)
Sep 8 11:20:08 localhost dhcpcd[4191]: timed out waiting for a
valid DHCP $$ service net.eth0
Sep 8 11:20:08 localhost rc-scripts: netmount was not
started.

2)
Sep 8 11:33:44 localhost dhcpcd[4135]: timed out waiting for a
valid DHCP $

I don't need netmount. Dynamic IP is provided on connecting broadband.

This is only a test on building Gentoo and Gnome-light. After test
finished, I'll emerge Gnome to replace Gnome-light. Tks.

Re: [gentoo-user] DVD burning package

2006-09-15 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Neil,

Tks for your advice.

 That depends on the type of discs you want to make. I prefer plain
 old
 kisofs + growisofs for data DVDs and tovid for video DVDs.

Mainly for data burning.

Do I need both of them or only either one? Do I need cdrecord as
well?

What will the correct command to emerge them?
# emerge -pv kisofs
then
# emerge kisofs
??? Will the second command line pull all necessary dependencies?

Same command to emerge growisofs?

What package will their frontend? k3b?

TIA

Re: [gentoo-user] DVD burning package

2006-09-15 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Rumen,

 Check gnome-extra/nautilus-cd-burner don't know if it's included in
 gnome-light though.

gnome-light is a very basic desktop with a few packages installed.

Application
Accessories - Terminal
Internet - SeaMonkey
System Tools - Avahi Zeorconf Browser/File Browser/New Login/New Login
in a Nested Window

I have to install my needed packages to run it.

At the beginning I installed gnome-light for test only. Later I found
it a light-weight desktop even more basic than Xfce. Dislike the full
gnome with some packages installed which I never use. So I decide to
keep gnome-light and install manually all the needed packages.

Tks

Re: [gentoo-user] DVD burning package

2006-09-15 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi Neil,

Tks for your advice.

 dvd+rw-tools. It does for DVDs what cdrecord does for CDs. Despite
 the
 name, it is for DVD-R(W) as well as DVD+RW

It is the tool for burning both DVD+/-R(W), but not working well on
DVD+R(W)

 If you emerge k3b with the dvdr USE flag, it will pull in all of
 these as
 dependencies.
I use it frequently on FC5_64. It is for KDE but also works on Gnome.
Before I ran command lines for burning CD/CD-R(W) until I found k3b

Whether edit /etc/make.conf

USE=...dvdr

then run;
# emerge --sync emerge -avuDN world
# emerge k3b

If I'm wrong pls correct me. Tks.

Hi Dirk,

  What will the correct command to emerge them?
  # emerge -pv kisofs
  then
  # emerge kisofs

 I'd guess this is a little typo: should be mkisofs. This is part of
 the
 famous cdrtools package.

Noted with tks.

Would
# emerge cdrtools
including mkisofs?

 Don't know where growisofs comes from.

I think it is the backend of k3b
