Have you tried requesting it in PNG format, and adding =true to
the request?

Thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried this. The image remains 
non-transparent with a white background.

Try with "transparent=true" instead "tranparent=true" (there is a missing "s"), 
it works well I've just tried.
